"We were not able to find Madrugada Magic under hotel listings on Trip Advisor— only in vacation rentals. But know that this property also has a full-board option, provided it is arranged in advance. Also know that there is a two-bedroom chalet with en-suite bath and full kitchen available that has an adjoining deck with spectacular views. The chalet is well designed, full of light, spotless and gleaming, and less than 10 yards up the hill from parking. The proprietors are nature lovers and keep two friendly and quiet German shepherds. It would be a sin to just spend one night here. A full day is needed to hike in or just appreciate the primeval bush of the Vumba Mountains. The pleasure of hiking here is that the climate is cool (especially on top of the ridge behind the property) and free of biting insects. The hardest part of the stay is getting there. You must follow the signage for Eden Lodge before the Madrugada signs start popping up. The last quarter mile is very steep. Most of the route is dirt road that can be hard for low-slung vehicles."

Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari ★★★

"We spent three nights at the Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge. We deliberately chose the standard bungalow to avoid having direct neighbors like in the guesthouse. The pictures on the website might lead you to believe you'd have a small bungalow to yourself. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. There's a second room in each bungalow, so you can hear the other person's air conditioning humming and every noise from next door. Despite it being the off-season, it's expensive considering it only includes a standard buffet breakfast. A tip for the lodge: if only two out of 18 standard bungalows are occupied, give tourists a bungalow to themselves for this price. The room and bathroom were clean, and the bed was large with a mosquito net. We were grateful for the air conditioning, as it was quite hot. There are mosquito nets everywhere, and the grounds are designed to keep monkeys out. You can see lots of antelopes, warthogs, monkeys, and at night, porcupines and civets, both on the grounds and from the restaurant – it's really great. The Wi-Fi in public areas is very slow, and social media is blocked during the day. Please be aware that game drives, both in vehicles and on foot, may be canceled due to rain. This was very disappointing, as there was no mention of it at the hotel or on the national park website. It hadn't rained for two months when we arrived, and then it started raining at night (9 liters in 24 hours). As a result, our morning safaris were always canceled, and the evening walking safari wasn't possible because the guides use two vehicles. Ultimately, we paid a lot of money and endured a long journey from Vilankulo with terrible road conditions to be able to do one of the three or four planned safaris."
