Red Lion Hotel

What a fantastic place. Without doubt the best welcome we’ve ever had. Rich and Jo on reception were amazing. Couldn’t help us enough. If you want a peaceful break, open your window and listen to the waves lapping at the shore. Then this is the place. Simply beautiful.

This is a beautiful hotel & restaurant in a beautiful setting- it’s special. Don’t let the reviews of Clovelly put you off. The village is very beautiful & caters for tourists - so what? Early in the morning before people arrive is so beautiful & you can dip/ swim off the beach surrounded by bird song. Again in the evening once the day trippers have gone you can explore the village & enjoy the pub & restaurant. The street is steep but really not that bad & the views are spectacular. The hotel is stylish & comfortable - delicious dinner & fab breakfast served by lovely helpful staff - I’m fussy but had nothing to complain about - you don’t have to pay to enter the village if you’re a gust & parking is free. Just go.

I'm sorry to write this as you have obviously spent money to upgrade the inside of the pub and touches like your games cupboard are a lovely idea, however like the previous reviewer we will no longer be coming to the Red Lion while you have this policy of disposable crockery and cutlery . Taking refreshments is as much about the ceremony of pouring tea brewed with boiling water from a teapot- being handed a disposable cup filled from a push button machine is a very different experience and not for us. I would also suggest that the huge television screen is unnecessary in a pub in such a beautiful location. Hoping this might be seen as constructive feedback so that we can return to your lovely pub.

Lovely setting on the Quay of this historic village but what a disappointment. The owners of this establishment have no regard for their unique location, every drink is served in a plastic glass, every meal is served in a polystirene box with plastic cutlery. Maybe this would be acceptable for take-away meals or if eaten at outside tables but surely this is wrong for customers sitting inside the hotel. Hope the owners of the Red Lion sort this out and very quickly.

My wife and I had the most wonderful experience in Clovelly and the Red Lion. We stayed for 4 nights while walking sections of the South West Coast Path. The hotel room was tastefully decorated with a wonderfully large bath, a must to ease aching muscles after a days walking. The restaurant was amazing with superb food and highly attentive service. In the village of Clovelly we met so many welcoming people that made our stay such a memorable experience. And the village owner, the ever so charming Hon John Rous also engaged with us, taking a keen and sincere interest in our experience and views.

Avoid unless you’re happy to pay over £30 for two meals only to be told that you have to eat it with wooden knives & forks out of a cheap & nasty takeaway box and…. When we questioned this to be told that “they simply cannot be bothered to run around outside picking up plates and cutlery that people leave in their outside area”!! Really?!

Fantastic food and service. I called ahead to ask about vegan options and although there wasn’t much on the standard menu they were happy to create some vegan dishes just for us. The food was great and the service was outstanding and very attentive. Added to this the location is beautifully situated by the old harbour wall with a great view of the coastline. A great all-round experience.

Disappointed. Lack of choice on menu and over priced. Only Ordered some chips to eat in which we collected ourselves in a plastic takeaway box. Our drinks were in plastic cups. Bar staff watching TV in the main bar area which was to loud and changing channels regularly. Won't be calling in again.

This was not the place we intended to stay in Clovelly, however due to some misunderstanding with the accommodation we did book diverted our stay down to these guys. From our initial phone enquiry right down to check out, they were amazing. Accommodation clean and tidy, food absolutely delicious. Every member of staff cheerful, polite and attentive. This may not be the only accommodation in Clovelly but this is the only place I’d stay when I return to Clovelly. A massive Thankyou to Richard, Jo and all the staff for making our stay as special and good as it was Best wishes Adam and Bileigh
