Traveling to Laguna Lodge was an adventure. We were brought in by boat along the river. The trip took just over an hour and there was a lot of wildlife to see. It's a busy transportation route as the towns of Tortuguero and San Francisco can only be access by river or by airplane. The lodge itself has a rustic look, though the rooms are a bit dated, they are clean and well maintained. There is no air conditioning, however with the fan on at night I wasn't the least bit uncomfortable. The dining room is huge and there are two buffet areas and a made-to-order table in the middle where they would make tacos to order, or omelets. The food was very good and there is water and fruit juice included. They also have wait staff bring around wine and beer for those who wish. My first morning @ Los Lagos I opted to go on the 5:30 a.m. boat cruise to catch the wildlife as the sun comes up. I'm very glad I did. Our guide for us was a fellow named Sebastian who was very knowledgeable and has a great attitude. Additionally the boat captain, Jordan (aka Eagle Eye), was amazing at finding wildlife. We saw an otter, all 3 species of monkey - including a Howler Monkey swimming in the river (how it got there is anyone's guess). We saw Tiger Herons, Little Blue Herons, Juvenile Night Heron, Green Heron, Jacanas, Yellow-throated Toucan, Green Macaws. The following day on the lodge property I was able to see a Pale Billed Woodpecker and a Long-Billed Hermit. There are Toucans and Macaws that around the lodge and a spotted them more than once. There are also a few very large iguanas. For nature lovers you really can't do much better than taking in Laguna Lodge. Highly recommend. Oh and for the birders out there - I was able to spot (and photograph) a Black-headed Trogon pair (M&F).
