I suggest you try their dinner. It’s the delicious Kaiseki style. You can also ask him to recommend wine and wine pairings. The boss is a wine collector. The owner and his wife speak English well enough to communicate, and their service attitude is second to none in Japanese B&Bs. The soundproofing is OK and the room is big enough. (I have only stayed in Seikamo House and this one as the better accommodation in Kyoto). The location is very good and easy to get around. Kiyomizu Temple is a little far away, so you can take transportation there and walk all the way back.

This was one of the dissapointing experiences we have ever had. The basic charge for one night us around £500 and for that princely sum you get to camp on the floor! The reception have a very poor grasp of any other language but japonese and the place was very much ‘fawlty towers’. We had booked for 4 nights but thankfully only stayed for one under the guise of construction work going on next door which frankly was an easier get out clause. We then booked a lovely room in the Hotel Resol for the other 3 nights. How anyone can say this is Relais Chataeux standard is baffling to us and we hope no one else is foolish enough to waste their money.

We spent one night here and from start to finish the staff were so kind and welcoming. The room was cozy and just like the photos. The large tub was definitely a highlight, they even filled it for us when we arrived. The bed they made for us was comfortable though I do wonder if softer pillows are an option (I did not ask). The meals we had took our stay to another level. Watching the chefs prepare dinner was amazing and since the restaurant only had few seats the service felt very special and personal. The staff did a good job explaining the dishes to us in English and suggesting drink pairings. It was one of the best meals I've ever had. The breakfast was also delicious. While there were other guests staying at the hotel we hardly noticed them because of how peaceful the room was and how attentive the staff were. I highly recommend the half board option at least for one night, it was well worth the price. The location of the hotel was also excellent for exploring and only a short walk from Nishiki Market.

The rating represents an average of the guest room (5 stars) and customer service (0 stars) experiences. Everything in life is relative, right? So keep in mind that we spent $700/night. The extremely expensive traditional Japanese guest rooms are exquisite, but 1) service in the exclusive restaurants is prioritized over service to hotel guests, meaning that there is literally no guest assistance during dinner hours; 2) and when guest service is available, it is provided in very poor, broken English, which results in misunderstandings and frustration. We actually felt as though we had to avoid the personnel and struggle to find our own solutions, such was the frustration and concern about feeling too pushy or intrusive. Although it was by no means easy, it was easier to google our way out of problems or ask people on the street. There were several times when we had to enter the kitchen to find anyone available to help and others when we dialed 8 on the telephone and let it ring interminably. It worked once. No one is around early in the morning. The owner acts like he’s on speed, making bizarre 2 second appearances and, in the following example, can make really bad choices. We originally booked a room for 5 nights during Sakura season along with our friends. Our friends canceled their reservation, so the owner assumed that it was OK to cancel ours as well. When we told him that we did not cancel, he scolded us, saying it was Sakura season and that he was very busy and that I must reconfirm my reservation with a credit card (by email!). This also coincided with a tourist rush to Japan that occurred just after Japan was reopened for general tourism. This all transpired around Christmas, so since I was not as vigilant with my emails and was hesitant to send credit card information by unencrypted email, we lost our reservation again! When the dust settled, he could not accommodate us for as long as we originally intended to stay. We are now in Tokyo at the Okura hotel..and NOW I know what superlative Japanese-style customer service is all about.

Traveled with 3 other friends, one vegan. Wanted a some what traditional ryokan with modern comforts. This was the only Vegan friendly Ryokan we could find and it exceeded our expectations. The staff was attentive, the rooms were comfortable, the in room bath was incredible and the food was the best part our our two week japan trip. Cant recommend this place enough.

We had the best time in Kyoto and in this Ryokan. It was traditional but had all the amenities one can hope for. The staff and the owners were very friendly and competent. It was clean, spacious, very well located close to the market and luxurious. The food was great too. Really worth the money.

I used it only for dinner on May 22, 2023 with 4 foreign friends. After arriving, when I told him that I had made a reservation for 5 people, a person who seemed to be the owner came out and asked me again, 4 people? He said. When I told him that I had made a reservation for 5 people many times, he finally said, "Oh, it was 5 people." are you okay? ! I was worried. After that, I was guided to a room like a study, and I was kept waiting for a while. Nothing comes out of the tea. After a while, I was guided to the kitchen and received an explanation of the ingredients of the day from my husband, but the explanation was verbose and boastful, so I felt a little uncomfortable. Even if you don't take the trouble to guide them to the kitchen and explain them, I think it would be better if you just explained the ingredients when the food was served. Also, aren't you very good at explaining? You say it in English, so even though I say it's fine in Japanese, are you not good at it? I felt a little uncomfortable because I was trying to say it in English. After that, I was finally passed to the tatami room on the second floor. Why didn't you guide me here from the beginning? I don't understand what you mean. There were 9 dishes and the taste was reasonable, but the amount was too small and it was delicious! I didn't feel like saying that. My husband said that he wouldn't feel bloated even after eating 9 dishes in the kitchen, and he was right, but I would like to have a little more (it doesn't have to be a lot of all the dishes, so which one? I would have liked a larger portion of the mains). There was a thick wine list. It seems that my husband boasted that it would take an hour to read all of them? Told. I'm not bragging or anything like that. It would be a good idea to respond to this request and recommend it. After that, the young boy in the black clothes was still unfamiliar with the waiter (part-time job?), and I was a little unsettled. This kind of place is useless unless it is a veteran waitress wearing Japanese clothes. I couldn't book another place on the day, so I booked this place, but I don't think there will be a second time.

A wonderful combination of old style - rooms with tatami and so on. with wonderful bathrooms and other equipment. Located in the heart of a big city, but on a quiet street. The restaurant works flawlessly, has a Michelin star. The wine list is beyond expectations for Japan.
