I have been avoiding Florida's beaches since the uptake in the delta variant of the corona pandemic infection. The loose nature of the state which is enhanced by the governor's stupidity, has made it persona non gratis. However, some friends I hadn't seen in over 10 years were vacationing in the Destin area, so I took a chance and made a quick trip down there. Passing through Destin a few months ago, I noticed a lot of new hotels. The Hilton garden inn as well as the la Quinta, are very new. However I chose to stay at the Holiday inn Express, because of my familiarity with the place, and it's more economical price than the other two hotels mentioned. Location-the hotel is located near a popular intersection that has an outback steakhouse, a cracker barrel, a Publix supermarket, a first watch restaurant for breakfast, and an entertainment complex with the movie theater. There's even a bass pro shop nearby should you need Beach equipment. One good thing about its location is that you can walk to the beach which is about three short blocks away. So you don't even have to move your car. Hotel-the hotel itself was clean, and rather basic, but quite comfortable. The parking lot is kind of small, but there seems to be space in the strip mall next door.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hilton Sandestin for a conference/ vacation, and after this experience, will never return. The first night we stayed they put us in a room that looked like it had been vacant for a while, and not recently cleaned-- food crumbs on the floor and noticeable dust on the furniture. There was also a roach on the wall. We figured, this is Florida, there will be an occasional roach. I did, however, mention it to the front desk and ask that someone come clean our room as it appeared dirty. No one came. Flash forward two nights later-- after killing 10 roaches, we asked for a new room. It was late in the day because we had been waiting for the manager to call us back. They couldn't accommodate us for several reasons. The next morning, I got a text from the front desk saying they had a new room available BUT I had 1 hour to move into the room or it would be given away. Thankfully, my husband stayed close by the room that day and was able to move us. On top of all this, we mentioned the incident to hotel waitstaff later that day and he said it didn't surprise him at all. They know there is a roach problem in the Spa Tower. The new room was an upgrade for the final night we were there, which was nice, but no real restitution was made for our 2 nights previous. For our trouble, they gave us a credit at the beach bar. This was the worst hotel experience.

The hotel front desk agent tried to charge me twice for the hotel service fee. I booked through trip.com and had already paid for the hotel service fee which is $98 for 2 nights. After showing them the itemized receipt, they said it is the 3rd party service fee, not the hotel service fee. I told them I’m not paying another service fee. I’m glad I did not have to pay twice, but it was kind of ruin my day. Now there is another extra charge on my credit card placed by the hotel. I am in the process of disputing with my credit card. Overall, I like the place, but not the way they tried to charge for all these hidden or bogus fees. Note: the hotel is already expensive…

The room is spacious and comfortable, and the price/performance ratio is good. There are retired grandparents on duty at the front desk. There is breakfast but it ends very early.

I have stayed here several times (at least six, but maybe, more). I have NEVER been disappointed! The staff is so friendly. Rooms are spotless...thank you housekeeping! Pool service, daily food and drink specials, gym, theater, free movie rentals...all excellent and the employees are super friendly. There is no ”restaurant” on site, but the daily grill food specials vary, and you can reserve a meal for pickup. BBQ grills are clean, and you can cook your favorite foods. The pools are exceptionally clean. There is an outdoor firepit where you can sit and sip. A lot of activities for the kiddies. Modern, updated rooms with a lot of amenities. I have stayed here so often that I really noticed the attention to details. Staff are second to none. I highly recommend a stay here, but book way in advance...and don't take my room because I WILL be back!
