Fabulous pub, so friendly, great rooms. Amazing food for dinner and breakfast. Stunning area over looking the river! From the moment we checked in Lindsey and staff were so friendly, home from home. Had a lovely atmosphere the Friday night, we only stayed one night but we are definitely going back! Amazing fish and chips.

We came here for some dinner on our visit to Devon as a late night meal and it didn’t disappoint! Portion sizes are huge, food delicious and it’s a lovely atmosphere with fantastic hosts. Lots of info about local produce ect. Would definitely return!

We stayed at this pub as we recently had a personal tragedy, so the circumstances, and the way my husband and I felt, weren’t ideal! Our hosts were so kind and considerate, and we had a delicious fish and chip supper and a few drinks in the pub - the meal was really delightful and cooked very well. Our bedroom was extremely comfortable and spotless. The large bathroom had a huge free standing bath tub in it, and I had a lovely relaxing bath; gorgeous thick fluffy towels were provided. The bed was incredibly comfortable with a great mattress and quality bed linen. I enjoyed a very well cooked breakfast the following morning- my husband just had toast - all in all a very comfortable stay with great service and deliciously cooked food - all at a great price! Thank you both so much for your hospitality at what was a very difficult time. Laura & Patrick

A very old pub in the middle of a restoration phase, that has much promise, and clearly a popular drinking bar for many locals with welcoming hosts who helped take luggage upstairs and helped with info on local attractions. We had a large bed in a small room, noisy due to the main 'A' road right outside. A small modern shower/toilet, a big plus was large bath sheets, but overall lacking in space to put clothes away for a weeks stay (just 3 coat hangers/4 hooks and an old, small chest of drawers). The room was quite dusty with a few cobwebs, but bed/shower room were mainly clean though you needed to ask if you wanted the bins emptied, or room refreshed in any way, so great for those that prefer a less fussy approach. Also complimentary toiletries does not include shower gel, which we hadn't realised, so had to go shopping the next day. Due to age of building, floors were uneven so not suitable for those with balance issues. Breakfast was plentiful with a selection of fresh fruit, Kellogs cereals, croissants, a take it or leave it option for a cooked breakfast (no choice offered, it was just bought out as it was, but was cooked well), with brown or white toast, jam/marmalade or marmite, tea/coffee and orange juice. Overall, not too comfortable or clean, but pleasant hosts, with a reasonable breakfast and a good location for exploring North Devon.

A fisherman's inn close to the River Taw in North Devon. This is a fine old inn which has been modernised (work is continuing). The acccommodation was excellent, a decent sized bedroom and shower room (thank you!) and good food, morning and evening. The Rising Sun is set on an A road but there is plenty of peace at night. The hosts are friendly and continuing to modernise and upgrade. Recommended, even for non-fishers!

A beautiful old inn with lots of character. My room was comfortable and had everything I needed, plus a few wonderful extras. It was very clean and stylishly decorated, in-keeping with the aesthetic of the area and character of the building. The staff were very helpful, friendly and attentive. The full English breakfast was good quality and served quickly. I was able to help myself to toast, fruit and croissant. Highly recommended for a country getaway. You could not ask for more! Thank you for a lovely stay.

A very old pub building which also is an inn. One night stay on a Sunday. We arrived at 4.30pm and apparently were told that food is only served up to 5pm. I cannot recall this, as we were always looking to eat at our overnight stay. The room was big enough, the en suite was modern, and the towels were great. The bed was a mattress on a mattress and very soft. We rushed down to the bar to order our evening meal. The ambience was not good. A locals boozer. With regular bad language being used whilst the publican's 6 year old daughter was roaming around. The landlord was actively entering into the banter, but never used swear words, but also never rebuked them from his customers. We had the daily special Cajun chicken, chips and coleslaw . The coleslaw was chunks of veg, otherwise ok. The stairs to the bedrooms were somewhat diy, and had to be negotiated carefully. Breakfast was full English or ?? . Tinned mushrooms and tinned tomatoes served by the landlord in a filthy pair of shorts. I felt that guests were not treated with respect and it was a "pub" for locals to sit at the bar all day.

Always good food and a friendly crowd…nice to see a family run pub done right. Menu has a great choice but my favourite is the cod and chips which are always great; fresh as can be and cooked perfectly.
