A very old pub in the middle of a restoration phase, that has much promise, and clearly a popular drinking bar for many locals with welcoming hosts who helped take luggage upstairs and helped with info on local attractions. We had a large bed in a small room, noisy due to the main 'A' road right outside. A small modern shower/toilet, a big plus was large bath sheets, but overall lacking in space to put clothes away for a weeks stay (just 3 coat hangers/4 hooks and an old, small chest of drawers). The room was quite dusty with a few cobwebs, but bed/shower room were mainly clean though you needed to ask if you wanted the bins emptied, or room refreshed in any way, so great for those that prefer a less fussy approach. Also complimentary toiletries does not include shower gel, which we hadn't realised, so had to go shopping the next day. Due to age of building, floors were uneven so not suitable for those with balance issues. Breakfast was plentiful with a selection of fresh fruit, Kellogs cereals, croissants, a take it or leave it option for a cooked breakfast (no choice offered, it was just bought out as it was, but was cooked well), with brown or white toast, jam/marmalade or marmite, tea/coffee and orange juice. Overall, not too comfortable or clean, but pleasant hosts, with a reasonable breakfast and a good location for exploring North Devon.
