GENEVIEVE RIOS

Christchurch Cathedral

Christchurch Cathedral's spire fell during the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, leaving much of the cathedral in ruins, with only parts of the structure remaining. After the collapse, the people of New Zealand debated for 8 years before deciding to rebuild. What we currently see are fences, scaffolding, and some renderings of the cathedral after restoration (Image 7). Next to the cathedral is a vase-shaped sculpture (Image 6), made of metal with light purple and blue hues, narrow at the bottom and wider at the top, with an openwork upper part resembling a vase full of flowers, juxtaposed with the cathedral's spire, contrasting the old with the new, the cathedral being wider at the bottom and the vase narrower at the bottom and wider at the top.
