Macau One-Day Free Tour (5): Rua do Cunha

Say goodbye to the towering and majestic hotel district, turn left at the water feature area of The Venetian, and head west for about 300 meters along Avenida da Praia Grande, cross the pedestrian overpass, and turn north into Rua da Praia do Manduco. This street has an arched pedestrian escalator (Picture 2), which is very energy-saving, and on the right hand side is the Cross Park with a wide water surface. At the end of the road, turn slightly to the left and you will see the blue exterior of the Kuan Tai Temple (Picture 3). Walking around the front of Calcada do Amparo and down the steps, you will arrive at the famous commercial street in Macau - Rua do Cunha (Picture 1). Rua do Cunha is one of the important streets in the old city area of Taipa. It starts between the Rua do Regedor and Rua Correia da Silva, and ends at the square in front of the Fire Services Bureau, with a total length of about 115 meters and a width of about 5 meters. Also known as 'Food Street' or 'Souvenir Street', it not only has delicacies such as Tai Lei Loi Kei pork chop bun, curry squid, Seng Cheong crab porridge, Macau's famous beef jerky, and almond cookies, but also souvenir shops like Koi Kei Bakery and Choi Heong Yuen Bakery. In 1884, Rua do Cunha was officially named after the 81st Governor of Macau, Pedro Alexandrino da Cunha. At the entrance of Rua do Cunha on the left is the old shop 'Vong Kei Coffee', and on the right is the famous old building - Taipa Market and its annex buildings. Moving forward, the famous Souvenir Street comes into view, with the scents of almond cookies, ginger candy, and durian pastries mingling and overflowing, as if you can smell the strong 'Macau flavor'. (Pictures 4-5) Walking from south to north through the street, you will reach the square in front of the Fire Services Bureau. Every Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau holds the 'Taipa Flea Market' there, bustling with people and extraordinarily lively, with the old town area of Taipa exuding the charm of a European town and brimming with vitality (Picture 6). Pedro Alexandrino da Cunha, a Portuguese Navy Colonel, arrived in Macau on May 2, 1850, to take office as the 81st Governor. He died of cholera on July 6. Rua do Cunha is one of the important streets in the old city area of Taipa. Turning left from the north entrance of Rua do Cunha and moving forward, this triangular area surrounded by Rua do Procurador, Rua do Regedor, and Rua do Cunhal is a historical district of Macau with hundreds of years of history, with crisscrossing lanes and houses that are 2-3 stories high Western-style buildings with bright colors. The Taipa Houses Museum, Pak Tai Temple, Tin Hau Temple, and the Fountain of Carmo are must-visit spots, and you can also choose an authentic Portuguese restaurant here to enjoy delicious food.
