Melbourne's Cityscape

Melbourne is a city that took my breath away with its diverse and striking architecture. From modern skyscrapers to Victorian-era buildings, this Australian gem has it all for architecture lovers like myself. As I strolled along the Yarra River, I was greeted by the sight of Federation Square's iconic modern design. With its sloping planes and mix of zinc, glass and sandstone, this public square shows Melbourne's embrace of contemporary architecture. Nearby Flinders Street Station, in contrast, is a stunning remnant of the city's colonial past. The prominent domed building built in 1910 remains a treasured landmark. Venturing into the Central Business District, I craned my neck upwards to admire the towering skyscrapers. Our guide highlighted the unusual triangle-shaped Tower Melbourne, before pointing out the striking blue glass exterior of the Eureka Tower. At almost 300 meters high, this skyscraper offers incredible views from its observation deck. Just outside the city center in inner suburbs like Fitzroy, Carlton and St Kilda, blocks of attached Victorian terraces with wrought iron lacework delighted me with their old-world charm. And the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition, remains an outstanding symbol of the city's 19th century pride and confidence. With its respect for the old and embrace of the new, Melbourne has curated an architectural experience like no other for visitors. The diversity of building styles here, from modern wonders to historic icons, tells the story of an innovative city confidently looking to the future without forgetting its past.
