Exploring the Hidden Treasures of Cloisonné Enamel at the Shanghai Museum

Cloisonné enamel is a famous Chinese special metal craft, also known as "Jingtai Blue," named after the Jingtai period of the Ming Dynasty when the craft reached its peak and the produced artworks were the most exquisite. The term "Jingtai Blue" first appeared in the archives of the Qing Palace Workshop. This craft involves soldering flat copper wires onto a copper base to form various patterns, then filling the patterns with enamel glaze and firing them. The Qing Dynasty marked another peak in the development of cloisonné enamel. The Palace Hall of Mental Cultivation established the "Workshop" specifically for making various items, including enamel works. During the Qianlong period, the production of Jingtai Blue saw unprecedented development, with major production centers not only in the Qing Palace's Imperial Household Department but also in important locations like Guangzhou and Yangzhou. This cloisonné enamel exhibition at the Shanghai Museum features a large number of exquisite pieces from the Ming Dynasty to the late Qing and Republic of China periods. Especially notable are the works from the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty made by the Imperial Workshop, which vividly demonstrate the craftsmanship of court enamelware.
