Badaling Great Wall(The Great Wall of China, The Great Wall)

The red leaf season at Badaling is in full swing and will last until early November. The South section and the area between North Tower 10 and North Tower 11 are where the colorful foliage is densest. But the red leaves won't wait; they only stay red for about 20 days a year. It's windy on the mountain with significant temperature differences, so it's better to plan your transportation and photo spots before you go rather than scrambling when you arrive. ☁️ Weather and outfit ⭕️ The mountain is several degrees cooler than the city. Daytime temperatures are around 50°F, but it feels colder when the wind blows, and it's even colder in the morning and evening. ⭕️ Outfit formula: Quick-dry long-sleeve base layer + thin fleece + windproof jacket + long pants with non-slip sneakers. ⭕️ Essentials: Hat, sunglasses, chocolate energy bars, and a thermos. There's no shelter on the wall. 📸 Photo spots ✅ South Tower 2 arrow window: The square arrow window acts as a natural frame, capturing the distant red leaves and the wall bricks without needing to force an angle. ✅ Between South Tower 3 and South Tower 4: The color layers on both sides of the Great Wall are more distinct, and it's more comfortable to walk, stop, and take photos here than dealing with the crowds at North Tower 8. ✅ North Tower 10 to North Tower 11: A concentrated area for colorful foliage. The climb is more strenuous than the south line, so know your limits. 🗺️ One-day timeline ⏰ 6:30 AM–7:00 AM ▪ Take the high-speed train to Badaling Great Wall Station. It's just a few minutes' walk from the exit to the entrance. ⚠️ It takes about 30 minutes from Beijing North Station or Qinghe Station. It's more reliable than the bus, though expect lines during the red leaf season. ⏰ 7:00 AM–10:00 AM ▪ Take your time climbing the north line. Check in at the "Hero's Slope" at North Tower 8. The red leaves are dense between North Tower 10 and North Tower 11. ⚠️ If you sweat while climbing, don't open your jacket to the wind when you stop. Keep your jacket zipped up. ⏰ 10:00 AM–11:30 AM ▪ Head to the south line for more photos. Don't miss the arrow window at South Tower 2. ⚠️ The south line is less crowded than the north line, so you won't have to dodge people in your photos. ⏰ 11:30 AM–12:30 PM ▪ Head down and leave. There's a KFC and Luckin Coffee on the pedestrian street with standard pricing. ⚠️ The scenic area stops admitting visitors at 4:30 PM, so don't linger too late. ❤ Travel tips ❶ The high-speed train is a stress-free choice; it's reliable and avoids traffic jams. If driving, parking is limited during the red leaf season, so try to arrive early. ❷ Visiting on weekdays is much more comfortable than on weekends, and the lighting is better for photos. Avoid peak times if you can. ❸ Food and water on the mountain are pricey. Bring your own bottle and pack some chocolate energy bars. ❹ The red leaves are heavily affected by the weather. Check the real-time foliage status before you leave, as a strong wind can blow many of them away. ❺ The steps on the Great Wall are uneven. If your shoes have soles that are too thin or too hard, your feet will protest after a while.

If this is your first time in Beijing or you want to spend one day visiting the most classic Beijing attractions, then the Badaling Great Wall + Summer Palace route is a must. One is the grandeur of "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man," and the other is the delicacy and poetry of the imperial garden. These two attractions combined allow you to feel the weight of history and appreciate Beijing's unique cultural heritage. It is very suitable for family trips, couples, parents traveling, and friends visiting Beijing for the first time. This guide will clearly explain everything at once: How to arrange the route, when to set off, how to play most easily, where the photo spots are, and what precautions to take. 1. Highlights of the itinerary 1. Badaling Great Wall The Badaling Great Wall is the most well-preserved and representative section of the Ming Great Wall and one of Beijing's most popular Great Wall attractions. The terrain here is steep and the view is broad. Standing on the city wall and looking out at the mountains, you can especially feel the grandeur and shock of ancient Chinese architecture. Suitable for: · First-time visitors to Beijing · History and culture enthusiasts · Those who want to take magnificent landscape photos · People traveling with parents or children 2. Summer Palace The Summer Palace is one of the most complete and largest existing imperial gardens in China, famous for Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, the Long Corridor, and the Tower of Buddhist Incense. Suitable for: · Those who love garden scenery and classical architecture · Photo and check-in enthusiasts · Families and people who want a relaxed visit · Visitors wanting to experience Beijing’s “imperial temperament” 2. Recommended way to play If time is limited, the most recommended way is: Go to the Badaling Great Wall in the morning and the Summer Palace in the afternoon. The reasons are simple: · It’s better to visit the Great Wall earlier to avoid crowds and high temperatures · The Summer Palace is better for a slow afternoon stroll with better lighting for photos · This itinerary is smoother and not too rushed 3. Suggested itinerary 7:00-8:00 AM Depart for Badaling Great Wall It is recommended to leave early, especially on holidays, weekends, and busy days. The earlier, the easier. If traveling independently, you can choose: · Private car/shared car · Direct shuttle bus to the scenic area · One-day group tour · Self-driving (pay attention to parking and route planning) 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Visit Badaling Great Wall It is recommended to reserve about 2.5-3 hours. If you have good stamina, you can climb more sections to feel the grandeur of the Great Wall; if you are with elderly or children, you can choose a relaxed visit without trying to cover everything. Recommended activities: · Start from the north section for a broader view · Key photo spots: city wall, beacon towers, distant mountain ranges · If stamina is limited, you can take the cable car (check in advance if needed) 12:00-13:00 PM Lunch and rest You can dine near Badaling. It is recommended to choose a clean, quick, and reliable restaurant to facilitate the trip to the Summer Palace afterward. Keep lunch simple to save time and energy. 14:30-17:00 PM Visit Summer Palace The Summer Palace is large, so it is recommended to visit key areas without trying to cover everything. Recommended route: Enter from East Palace Gate → Hall of Benevolence and Longevity → Dehe Garden → Long Corridor → Paiyun Hall → Tower of Buddhist Incense → Kunming Lake → Seventeen-Arch Bridge → West Dike/Suzhou Street (optional) If time allows, stay longer by Kunming Lake; the scenery is especially photogenic on good weather days. 4. How to better enjoy each attraction Badaling Great Wall tips Go early Morning light is good, temperature comfortable, and fewer people. Wear comfortable shoes The Great Wall has many steps; it is recommended to wear non-slip sports shoes and avoid high heels or hard-soled leather shoes. Manage your stamina Don’t rush at the start; walk and take photos to conserve energy. Photo tips · Capture the extending perspective of the wall · Take distant views from the beacon towers · Side backlighting helps create depth · Wear bright clothes for more eye-catching photos Summer Palace tips 1. Slow down and enjoy the walk The Summer Palace is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. 2. Walk a section of the Long Corridor The Long Corridor is beautifully painted and a very representative check-in spot. 3. Kunming Lake is great for photos Especially in the evening, the scenery is gentle and photos have a great atmosphere. 4. Choose whether to climb the Tower of Buddhist Incense based on stamina The view is better from the top, but if you have elderly or children, adjust accordingly. 5. Best seasons to visit? Spring Comfortable climate, fresh scenery at the Summer Palace, great for photos. Summer Recommend early departure and sun protection. Both the Great Wall and Summer Palace are good for large scene photos but watch out for heat. Autumn Highly recommended season with good weather, clear air, and rich scenery layers. Winter Fewer tourists, quieter experience, suitable for those who like peace. But keep warm, especially on the windy Great Wall. 6. Travel tips · Check the opening hours and ticket info in advance · Book ahead on holidays to avoid queues · Bring ID, some attractions may require verification · Prepare water, tissues, power bank, and sun protection · Weather changes quickly in the mountains; bring a light jacket · If traveling with elderly or children, choose easier ways to visit 7. Recommended for This route is especially suitable for: · First-time visitors to Beijing · Those wanting to efficiently check off classic attractions · Families with children · Middle-aged and elderly parents traveling · Friends who want to take cultural and scenic photos · People with limited time but want a quality experience If you come to Beijing and can only choose two places to visit, they must be the Badaling Great Wall and the Summer Palace.

From Day to night… From the ancient paths of the Great Wall of China To the modern streets of Beijing 🇨🇳 #china #beijing #thegreatwallofchina #ancient #modern

Everyone knows Beijing, Shanghai and the Great Wall — but China is absolutely HUGE, and some of its most incredible places are the ones that barely make it onto typical travel lists. 👀 ✨ 1. Fanjingshan, Guizhou Dramatic mountain peaks rising through the clouds, ancient temples perched on the summit and some seriously unreal views. 🌈 2. Zhangye Danxia, Gansu Those rainbow-coloured mountains you’ve probably seen online? They’re real. The layers of red, orange, yellow and green look almost CGI. 💎 3. Jiuzhaigou Valley, Sichuan Crystal-clear turquoise lakes, waterfalls, forests and snow-capped mountains. It genuinely looks like a fantasy film. 🏔️ 4. Enshi Grand Canyon, Hubei Massive cliffs, deep valleys and spectacular mountain scenery without the same international crowds as China’s better-known attractions. 🌊 5. Wulong, Chongqing Huge limestone formations, dramatic gorges and natural bridges surrounded by lush green mountains. 🏯 6. Furong Ancient Town, Hunan A historic town built around a spectacular waterfall — especially magical when the lights come on after dark. 🌿 7. Huangshan, Anhui Misty granite peaks, ancient pine trees and clouds rolling between the mountains. One of China’s most iconic landscapes, but still surprisingly under-visited internationally. 🏞️ 8. Yunnan’s Tiger Leaping Gorge One of the deepest river gorges in the world, surrounded by huge mountain peaks. Perfect if you want scenery AND hiking. 💡 The biggest surprise? China isn’t just huge cities and famous landmarks. There are entire regions filled with landscapes that look like they belong on another planet. 📌 SAVE THIS for your China bucket list! #china #travel #travel2026 #familytravel #naturalwonders Planning your first trip to the Great Wall of China? Forget crowded Badaling! To truly appreciate the scale of this wonder of the world, take stunning photos without hundreds of tourists, and have an unforgettable experience, choose less obvious but much more scenic routes. Here are the top 3 sections that will exceed your expectations. Bookmark them! 1. Jinshanling Great Wall: A Hiker's and Photographer's Paradise Perhaps the most photogenic section of the Wall. Here, carefully restored watchtowers blend harmoniously with "wild," untouched sections stretching far into the horizon along the mountain ridges. 📍 Location: Hebei Province, Luanping County (about 130 km from central Beijing). 🚇 How to get there: The most convenient way is to take a taxi for the whole day or book a private transfer. By public transportation: Take a direct tourist bus from Dongzhimen or Wangjing West metro stations (runs on a schedule, leave early in the morning). 💰 Cost: Entrance fee: approximately 65 yuan (RMB). Optional cable car: 40 RMB one-way. 🕒 Opening hours: Daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. 💡 Tip: This place is famous for its sunsets and sunrises. If possible, stay at a guesthouse at the foot of the mountain to start the climb early in the morning. You'll experience the mystical mist shrouding the mountains and take the best landscape photos of your life! 2. Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall: A Unique Wall on the Water The only section of the Great Wall near Beijing that, in places, goes right under the water! The scenery here is quite different from the classic views, thanks to the picturesque Haoming Lake, which cuts through the stonework. 📍 Location: Huairou District, about 70 km from Beijing. 🚇 How to get there: From Dongzhimen Bus Station, take express bus 916 to Huairou District, then transfer to a local bus (e.g., H21) or take a taxi (about 30-40 minutes from central Huairou). 💰 Cost: Entrance to the scenic area is 60 RMB. 🕒 Opening hours: Daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. 💡 Tip: Be sure to rent a boat or take a mini-cruise on a speedboat (from 40 RMB). The view of ancient stone fortifications rising directly from the water's surface is a completely different perspective that shouldn't be missed. This route is ideal for a relaxing, leisurely ride without any extreme climbs! 3. Simatai Great Wall & Gubei Water Town: The Magic of the Wall at Night Simatai is one of the steepest and most authentic sections, retaining its rugged, pristine appearance since the Ming Dynasty. And the picturesque "water town" of Gubei, located right at the foot, makes this location ideal for a weekend trip. 📍 Location: Miyun District, about 120 km from Beijing. 🚇 How to get there: A direct tourist express bus departs from Dongzhimen Station directly to Gubei Town (the journey takes about 2-2.5 hours). 💰 How much: A ticket to the Great Wall alone is 40 RMB, and admission to the Gubei Water Town is 140 RMB (a combo ticket for 170 RMB is more convenient and affordable). The cable car to the Wall is an additional cost (around 160 RMB roundtrip). 🕒 Opening hours: Daytime Wall tours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Night tours are from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The town is open until late in the evening. 💡 Tip: Simatai is the only section of the Great Wall open for nighttime visits! Buy an evening ticket, take the cable car up at dusk, and enjoy the stunning views of the illuminated Wall and the Gubei Water Town below, glowing with thousands of lanterns. It's simply magical!

This Badaling entrance to the Great Wall is a great option for families with young children. I don’t have a direct comparison with the other entry points, but based on the reviews I read, I felt this one was particularly suitable for families because there are fewer steep slopes and the climb is relatively easy. We visited as a family of four around midday on 17 August, when the temperature was around 32°C. As it was during the school holidays, the site was extremely crowded, and it took us around two hours to get through the cable car queue and reach the entrance to the Wall. Once we were on the Wall, however, we had a great time. We managed to climb and walk for around 18,000 steps. We could have explored more if the temperature had been lower, but given the heat, we were very happy with what we managed to do. Overall, the Great Wall is definitely a must visit. All our bookings were made through Trip.com, and everything was smooth and well organised, with clear guidance and instructions throughout.

Every rainy season, the Jiankou Great Wall welcomes a spectacular natural phenomenon—the breathtaking sea of clouds. When mist rises between the mountains, the ancient stone walls appear to float above a vast ocean of white, creating a scene that perfectly captures the grandeur and poetry of the Chinese landscape. The words of Yuan dynasty poet Zhang Yanghao beautifully describe the ever-changing charm of clouds and mountains: "When clouds arrive, the mountains become more beautiful; When clouds depart, the mountains become like a painting. The mountains brighten and darken with the clouds, The clouds rise and fall together with the mountains." At Jiankou, clouds weave through the rugged peaks and ancient watchtowers, sometimes hiding the mountains in mystery and sometimes revealing dramatic ridgelines beneath the sky. The contrast between weathered stone, endless mist, and majestic mountain scenery creates a landscape that changes with every moment. 📍 Location: Jiankou Great Wall, Huairou District, Beijing, China 🇨🇳 ☁️ Highlight: A magnificent sea of clouds surrounding one of Beijing's most dramatic sections of the Great Wall ✨ Feature: Ancient stone walls, rugged mountain ridges, drifting mist, changing light, and spectacular natural scenery 🍃 Atmosphere: Majestic, mysterious, and poetic 📸 Best for: Landscape photography, sunrise views, hiking, and capturing the harmony between nature and history 💡 Travel Tip: The best cloud seas often appear after rainfall when humidity is high and temperatures change rapidly. Early mornings offer the most magical light and atmosphere. ✨ Signature feeling: Above Jiankou, the Great Wall becomes a bridge between earth and sky—where clouds embrace the mountains and every moment unfolds like a living Chinese ink painting. ☁️🏔️✨
