On 9 July 2003, the Europa Mountains National Park was selected for the UNESCO-approved list of national park biosphere reserves. There are protected species such as Cantabria thunderbirds, beard vultures, brown bears, Iberian wolves and Cantabria wild goats, and statues of these animals are seen from time to time in the park.
