Jianghanguan is also called Hankou Customs, or Jianghanguan Building. It was once the tallest building in Wuhan and the place where Wuhan Customs worked. Before Wuhan opened in 1861, the Qing government only had inland checkpoints in Wuhan's three towns, namely Jiangguan in Wuchang, Chaoguan in Hanyang, Zongguan in Han (kou) West, and Hanguan in Hankou. Until Hankou opened, the inland level was withdrawn and the Jianghan level based on Hanguan was established. Wuhan level was renamed Wuhan level after the founding of New China in 1949.
