About Old State House

The Old State House was built in 1713 and was used as the main government building of Boston prior to and during the American Revolution. Revolutionaries such as John Adams, John Hancock and Samuel Adams debated inside this building. The announcement of the Declaration of Independence was made from the balcony of the Old State House and the Boston Massacre occurred directly in front of the building. The Old State House was one of the most important meeting places for political discussion in Colonial America and visitors enjoy coming here to learn about its history.
