After winning the Battle of Sekigahara and subsequently establishing the Edo Shogunate, the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered in 1610 that the samurai who had been enemies begin the construction of Nagoya Castle. The golden shachihoko (dolphin-like creatures) that adorn the two ends of the castle's ridge, the claim to the largest castle tower in history, the splendid and luxurious Honmaru Palace, the expansive Ninomaru Garden, and other structures of Nagoya Castle all demonstrate the formidable strength of the Tokugawa family. The castle is also surrounded by high walls, giving it fortress capabilities. Over the 260 years of the Edo period (1603-1867), Nagoya Castle, as the stronghold of the Owari Tokugawa family, flourished and prospered without end.

Nagoya Castle was completed in 1615 by the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Topped with golden shachihoko, votive tiger-fish roof devices, and boasting the largest floorspace of any tower keep, Nagoya Castle and its magnificent Hommaru Palace were operated as a military facility. Nagoya Castle was Japan’s first castle to be designated a National Treasure. Even after wartime air raid destruction, it was deemed historically important enough to be designated a National Historic Site. Restoration work being carried out is returning Nagoya Castle to original condition.Most castle buildings were destroyed in the air raids of 1945, including the castle keep and the palace buildings. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle keep dates from 1959 and - before its closure in May 2018 - contained a modern museum with exhibits about the castle's history. #thingstodo You can see the amazing castle from close by, and also go walk inside the old Nagoya residence of the Shogun which had a really pretty traditional Japanese interior (no furniture though). It's surrounded by a park and a gravel field that was really spacious and the whole place was not crowded when we went on Tuesday afternoon, even though it is Chinese New year, which was nice. Small entry fee, tickets can be bought at the main gate.
