Speaking of Chikan, the feelings for it originated from letting the bullet fly this movie. The ancient city of Chikan, without the tranquility of Lijiang, without the beauty of the phoenix, without the warmth of Wuzhen, has its unique depth. It can be an ancient town with stories. There is no affair, no drunken dreams, but it has a unique overseas Chinese culture in Guangdong Province. Whether in the field of architecture or at the spiritual level, it has seen past events in South China. Its cultural history has unlimited connotations. Chikan is built along the Tanjiang River. The south bank is a village, and the north bank is a city. It is a unique arcade building, far more than the huge foreign buildings in Kaiping Old Street. On the east bank of the embankment along the river, the Zhonghua Road, which is parallel to it, is sandwiched between two roads and there is a small road called Two Roads. This is a three-horizon parallel with the river, and there are many vertical roads crossing them. Form the road network of the city. Chikan Town has a quaint taste of Chinese and Western. Therefore, it is called "the fifth ancient town in China". Old tree, old building. Slate paved road, square column window, square ruler, solid wood bed. The lengthy and deep tone of the gray, the architectural style of the combination of Chinese and Western, the tower building built along the river, there is no gorgeous, no publicity, and there is no way to talk about the amazing word. For hundreds of years, silently watching the other side of the river,
Hehe_Hexiaoxi.

Kaiping Diaolou Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Kaiping Diaolou
Kaiping Diaolou is a building left by overseas Chinese in the 1920s and 1930s. It combines living and defensive functions and is a precious world heritage.
The main features of Kaiping Diaolou include:
- Mixed style: The architectural style is wild with delicacy, mixed with Chinese and Western styles, which is a major feature of Kaiping Diaolou.
- Combination of local and Western: After two anti-bandit operations, the Kaiping area has been relatively stable, and the appearance of cottage-style buildings is also a combination of local and Western.
- Decorations reflect the changes in the times: The decorations of the buildings reflect the changes in the times and also declare the new thoughts and interests of the building owners.

Kaiping is nicknamed 'the home of overseas Chinese' as huge numbers of emigrants left this area beginning in the late nineteenth century. Many settled abroad and Taishanese, the local language, is still spoken around the world. Others returned home with both wealth and inspiration. They imported what were then new western inventions like flush toilets and radios and built houses in their home villages inspired by the architecture they'd seen in Europe and the Americas.
The most distinctive of their buildings are diaolou, fortified towers crowned with ostentatious baroque or neoclassical penthouses. They served both as residences and defence against bandits. They can be found in various places, but especially in Kaiping, where they are recognised as a Unesco world heritage site. Many are scattered singly or in pairs throughout the countryside but there are a few diaolou clusters where you can see many in a small area and even climb up a few of them, as well as seeing the Republic of China period furnishings inside. The surroundings are very rural, not much changed a century after these eccentric towers were raised.
Kaiping is an easy day- or weekend-trip from Guangzhou. From Kaiping Railway Station it's easiest to get a taxi to one of the diaolou clusters.
Be sure to taste the local speciality baozaifan, rice cooked in a clay pot until the bottom gets crusty, served with various toppings.

Kaiping 开平,this is how does Guangdong small provincial city looks like. Mostly people arrive here to take buses and immediately transfer to Dialou scenic spots located in several villages around Kaiping city.
Kaiping at a glance is very calm place where life is slow and peaceful existence. Good is typical Guangdong food but offered for lowest price.

Jiangmen, Guangdong | Not only for the thrill, but also for the discovery of a stunningly obscure island
Jiangmen is not only known for its thrill😜, but also for its bunkers adorned with the mottled traces of time😃, food stalls filled with the aroma of life🥘, and the breathtaking Shangxiajiu Islands of Taishan👏.
✅About transportation:
🚄High-speed train: Jiangmen Station, Jiangmen East Station, Xinhui Station. Jiangmen East Station is closer to the city center😎.
🚢Ferry: Jiangmen Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, Taishan Shanzui Port Terminal🛳.
🚘Self-driving: About 2 hours drive from Guangzhou city center🚗.
✅About accommodation:
It is recommended to stay at Changdi Fengmao Street or Thirty-Three Xiuxi Street. Those with a higher budget can stay in a sea view room on Chuandao or a hot spring hotel🤩.
✅Food recommendations:
Gu Jing roast goose, Outer Sea noodles, Enping sai fun, Taishan eel rice, Lotus Pond fish cake, Shuangshui cured meats, Heshan Baishuijiao, Kaiping fish skin dumplings, Enping shaobing, Steamed butter crab, Chenpi chicken, Taishan oysters🤤.
✅Itinerary:
Day1: Thirty-Three Xiuxi Street - Chikan Old Town - Kaiping Diaolou - Mei Family Courtyard🎈.
Day2: Shangchuan Island - Xiachuan Island💖.
🌟Must-visit attractions:
1️⃣Shangchuan Island of Taishan: Known as 'the lotus emerging from the azure waves of the South Sea', it features Feisha Beach, Jinsazhou, and Yinsatan, forming a gently undulating sandy landscape😍.
2️⃣Xiachuan Island of Taishan: A food paradise dominated by seafood, where you can stroll under the coconut groves while savoring the delicious coconut juice🥥.
3️⃣Thirty-Three Xiuxi Street: The filming location of the popular drama 'The Thrill', where the Changdi arcade buildings along the street blend Chinese and Western elements, exuding an overseas Chinese style🤩.
4️⃣Chikan Old Town: With over 600 arcade buildings, it forms the largest, most continuous, and best-preserved overseas Chinese arcade building group in the country🤓.
5️⃣Mei Family Courtyard: A row upon row of arcade-style buildings with exquisite decorations, it is the best-preserved overseas Chinese architecture in China, and the filming location of 'Let the Bullets Fly'😎.
6️⃣Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Tourism Area (Zili Village): Guangdong's first World Cultural Heritage site, it is a multi-story tower building that integrates defense, residence, and Chinese-Western architectural art🤩.
【Tips to avoid pitfalls】
①For self-driving, set the navigation to 'Shanzui Port Terminal'. The ferry ride to Shangchuan Island takes about 30 minutes, and to Xiachuan Island about 45 minutes😜;
②If you're taking your car to the island, arrive at the terminal early to avoid long queues; the ferry ride to Shangchuan Island takes about 80 minutes😝;
③It is recommended to book discount tickets at least one day in advance, valid for 7 days from the date of ticket collection; (The Shangchuan-Xiachuan Island combo ticket is not limited to one-day use, you can allocate your time over several days according to your own schedule)🤗.
WanderingDesires
Just got back from Jiangmen! Take my advice! Really, don't go!
I saw some bloggers advising against it online, but I still went with the filter of 'The Wild Goose Lake' in mind, and I regret it so much!
The wind was at level four that day, and it was drizzling. I only wore a thin jacket, and I was freezing. After getting off the bus, you'll hear a lot of motorcyclists shouting in Cantonese. It's only 3km to Thirty-Three Market Street, but they were charging way too much, especially since it was raining at the time. Then we decided to wait for the bus; it takes 36 minutes for 4 stops, and we waited quite a while without seeing the driver start the bus. So we went to sit next to the driver and booked a 'Handheld Reservation Bus', which costs 5 yuan per person no matter where you go, and that was relatively cost-effective.
After arriving at Thirty-Three Market, the ancient buildings inside were well preserved, and walking on the street felt like traveling back to the end of the last century. If I had a camera, the photos would have been amazing~ Qiming Li has a lot of special shops, graffiti, and festive couplets. There are a few flower walls that are quite photogenic, so if you want to take pictures, you can go there.
Life-size standees of Big Brother and Big Sister and Qiang Brother's Pig Trotter Noodles are everywhere, in every street and alley. We went to eat at a Lai Fen restaurant that was featured on CCTV; I ordered the lotus root and pork rib Lai Fen. The soup was rich, but I didn't like the peanut sauce.
Because it was so boring, we braved the strong wind and rode bicycles to Rainbow Village. I have to say, the transportation is really inconvenient! The shared bicycles have fixed positions, and there are only so many squares; you have to get to the point to return them, which is different from Guangzhou. It took a lot of pushing and shoving before we could return them.
We originally planned to go back at 8 pm, but there was nowhere else to go, and the other attractions were quite far apart. We stayed in a coffee shop for a long time and felt we really couldn't stay any longer, so we changed our tickets and took the train back to Guangzhou at around 5 pm.
In conclusion; when going out, you must check the weather, or else the experience will be greatly diminished. It's best to drive to Jiangmen, having a car will be much more convenient!
3ll@ Sc0tt
Listen to my advice! It's a win to visit Jiangmen during the off-season!
There are fewer people, beautiful scenery, and it's cost-effective! It's very comfortable!
It won't be too cold or too hot - the climate is pleasant!
I chose a weekend after the holiday to play in Jiangmen for 2 days
It was really fun, delicious, and great for shopping ahhh!

Kaiping Diaolou Cluster in Tangkou Town, Kaiping, Jiangmen, Guangdong
An era's architecture reflects the memory of that era, bearing the spirit, wealth, culture, and style of its time. The villages of Zili and Qilin in Tangkou Town, Kaiping, Jiangmen, Guangdong, preserve the memory of a hundred years of historical and cultural architecture.

Kaiping Diaolou | Jiangmen is not only known for its rapid development, but also for its World Cultural Heritage
In Kaiping, Jiangmen, a 90-minute drive from Zhuhai, I felt as if I had traveled back to a century ago. Amidst the pastoral charm of Lingnan, towering diaolous with various styles are interspersed. Time seems to have frozen at a certain moment in the past, allowing us to glimpse fragments of history.
Zili Village Diaolou Cluster
If I could only visit one place, I would choose Zili Village. Its uniqueness lies not only in its exquisite appearance but also in the serene and beautiful natural scenery that surrounds it. Walking along the country lanes, with neat rice fields on the side and lotus ponds interspersed, the tranquil beauty of rural life is overwhelming. The tall diaolous with different appearances are scattered throughout the countryside. Currently, only three diaolous in the entire village are open to the public, with the most conspicuous being the 'Mingshi Lou', which fans of the movie 'Let the Bullets Fly' will definitely recognize at first glance, built in 1925. Not only is the exterior exquisite, but the interior furniture and decorations are also well preserved. You can also go up to the panoramic terrace on the top floor, where the view is superb.
