Ping Yao Gu Cheng aka Ping Yao Ancient City. This ancient city is located in Ping Yao City, Shanxi province. I guess many people herd about this place, about this very famous city and germ of Shanxi Province (not Shaanxi). This is the one of the most well preserved ancient cities in China. Thriving through the centuries in the ancient time, it has survived twenty's century and appears in its unique and charming style in front of our eyes.
I would like to emphasize this is real city, all buildings are really ancient, not the new made after 2000 year. Really, unique place. The city is presented by its ancient streets and everywhere small museum are ready to accept guests. Every building is a museum, ancient hall or rich family yard. There are a lot of special artifacts. Totally, the visiting requires two days to visit every small place. Ticket gives the access to every location. Each place in this city deserved separate introduction.

Pingyao is one of the old ancient city in China which is still very original and it is also one of the UNESCO world heritage site. This ancient city is surrounded by its outstanding city walls which were used by the guards to protect the city from enemies in the past. Pingyao
A city with two temples
Besides the ancient city of Pingyao
The most notable are the Zhen Guo Temple and the Shuanglin Temple
The Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Zhen Guo Temple is a construction from the Five Dynasties period, and it is the second oldest wooden structure in existing Chinese temple architecture after the Nan Chan and Fo Guang, collectively known as the 'Three Great Jewels' of ancient Chinese wooden structures. Moreover, Zhen Guo Temple also possesses 11 rare colored sculptures from the Five Dynasties that are seldom found in China.
The colored sculptures of Shuanglin Temple are famous for having over 2000 sculptures from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, earning it the reputation of being a museum of colored sculpture art.

The temple where even deities clash—Shuanglin Temple in Shanxi
The Four Heavenly Kings of Shuanglin Temple in Pingyao, Shanxi, are the best group I have seen so far. They have a firm gaze that exudes majesty, and even a bit of fierceness, but the Four Heavenly Kings at Pule Temple seem to have more of a human touch. It feels like behind their seriousness, they also have moments of hearty laughter. Perhaps when the night is deep and the temple is empty, they might even have a deep conversation about life.
📍Detailed address: Shuanglin Temple, Pingyao County, Jinzhong City
🕙Opening hours: 08:00-18:00
Ticket💰: 28 yuan per person
🛑: Flash photography prohibited
🌟Highlights:
1. Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin: Located in the Bodhisattva Hall, it is an incarnation of the Guanyin Bodhisattva. The expression is solemn yet full of compassion. The four walls of the hall are adorned with hundreds of standing Bodhisattva statues, with flowing robes, lifelike in appearance.
2. Carefree Guanyin: Located in the Thousand Buddha Hall, the statue has its right leg bent and squatting, with the left foot stepping on a lotus leaf, relaxed and carefree. It is considered one of the two most beautiful existing statues along with the Carefree Guanyin of Zhengding Longxing Temple.
3. Skanda: Located in front of the Carefree Guanyin statue, the body presents a clear curved shape, much like a fully drawn bow ready to shoot, strong and powerful. It reflects the bravery and magnificence of ancient warriors, and with its vivid facial expressions, this masterpiece is also known as the most beautiful Skanda.

Shanxi people are familiar with the Qiao Family Courtyard because of the Shanxi merchant culture. Foreigners know that the Qiao Family Courtyard is mostly because of the movie "The Red Lanterns Hang High". But the correct way to visit the Qiao Family Courtyard is not just to see the red lanterns. So go to the Qiao Family Courtyard, dont just look at the red lanterns. Its more worth seeing than the red lanterns. Its the three treasures in the collection of the Qiaos compound. Each of these three cultural relics is not small, some still unique.
Kowloon screen:
The object with the dragon naturally can't be separated from the palace. The screen of the Kowloon is flowing out of the palace. Under the chance of coincidence, the Joe family bought a huge sum of money to buy it back. The
Kowloon screen is made of huanghuali wood, and the nine dragons on it are alive. A closer look reveals that there are still 72 dragons, so the total is eighty-one dragons.
Kowloon Lights:
Kowloon Lights Craftsmanship is exquisitely crafted and crafted. The structure is unique and ingenious. It is a luxurious and practical wood carving craft.
The Empress Dowager Cixi fled to Xi'an when the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded, and Qiao's family donated 300,000 silver and the Queen Mother to solve their urgent needs. After the Empress Dowager Cixi thanked his loyalty and rewarded two Kowloon lanterns, the country has yet to find a third flaw.
Rhinoceros spectroscopy:
There is a rhinoceros mirror in the No. 3 hospital of Qiao's house. It is about one meter in diameter, two meters high and weighs one ton. It uses the hardest rare wood of the wood. The system is a national first-class cultural relic, and it is also the treasure of the town house of Qiao.

Shanxi | "The world is full of changes, leaving behind the grandest of houses in China"
Wang Family Courtyard is located in Jingsheng Town, Lingshi County, Jinzhong, Shanxi, built by the Jingsheng Wang family over the course of more than 300 years during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It covers a total area of 250,000 square meters, with five lanes, six forts, and one street, and its scale indeed qualifies it as a folk Forbidden City.
Wang Family Courtyard is divided into two parts
🔸 The Gaojiaya building complex and the Hongmenbao building complex.
🔸 Gaojiaya was built by two brothers of the seventeenth generation of the Jingsheng Wang family, consisting of 35 courtyards, each with both independent and shared courtyards, interconnected by 65 doors, which is very interesting.
🔸 Hongmenbao is built against the mountain, resembling a fortress, with one main lane and three cross lanes in the middle, and four layers of courtyards arranged symmetrically from low to high on the left and right, forming a neat 'Wang' character shape.
The stone carvings, wood carvings, and brick carvings of Wang Family Courtyard are very exquisite, and a lot of thought has been put into them, incorporating ancestral teachings, family instructions, wishes, and blessings into every corner of the courtyard, with each image having a meaning and auspicious wishes, constantly reminding the Wang family descendants to strive for improvement.
Wang Family Courtyard reveals the strictness and rules of a wealthy household, with order among the young and old, and distinction between men and women; the master lives in the main house, children in the side houses; with front halls and back bedrooms, and plaques over the doors, couplets in the halls. However, the layout and architecture of each courtyard are very similar, and walking inside is like being in a maze.
Wang Family Courtyard
Location: Wang Family Courtyard, Jingsheng Town, Lingshi County, Jinzhong, Shanxi
Opening hours: Opens at 8:00, and entry stops at 17:40
🎫 Ticket price: Peak season (April–October) 55 RMB/person ; Off-season (November–March) 35 RMB/person ;
📸 Photography tips
🔹 The best photo spot is the Dingjia Garden
🔹 From the Dingjia Garden, you can climb up the Hongmenbao city wall for a classic shot of the Wang Family Courtyard, and also capture the Gaojiaya building complex
🔹 Near the Chongningbao side, the rooftop position of Hongmenbao is a good spot for photos

The land of Sanjin, the number one residence of the Chinese people
Wang is a surname, a surname is half a country;
Home is a courtyard, a courtyard is half a city.
Wang's Grand Courtyard, located in the historic and cultural town of Jingsheng, was built by the Jingsheng Wang family over more than 300 years during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a fully enclosed castle-style luxury residence, including five alleys, six forts, and one street, with a total area of 250,000 square meters, which is 100,000 square meters larger than the Forbidden City.
The Hongmenbao architectural complex is both a fort and a city, built against the mountain, arranged in four layers of courtyards from low to high, symmetrical on the left and right, with a main thoroughfare in the middle, forming a regular 'Wang' character shape, and also a hidden 'dragon' shape. The 88 courtyards within the fort each have their own characteristics, none of which are identical.
Wang's Grand Courtyard is famous for the 'three carvings': wood carving, stone carving, and brick carving, all displayed in one courtyard, with a number and craftsmanship that are rare in the world

Zhenguo Temple
#familytrips2024
Our family excursion to Zhenguo Temple was a serene and culturally enriching journey into the heart of Buddhism and ancient Chinese architecture. As we entered the temple grounds, we were immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere and the scent of burning incense wafting through the air. Walking along the stone pathways lined with centuries-old trees and traditional Chinese gardens, we felt a sense of tranquility wash over us. Exploring the temple halls, we admired the intricate wood carvings, colorful murals, and majestic statues of Buddha, each one a testament to the devotion and craftsmanship of generations past. Participating in a meditation session led by a resident monk, we experienced a moment of inner reflection and spiritual connection. It was a profound experience that left us with a deeper appreciation for the timeless teachings of Buddhism and the beauty of Chinese culture.
As for our next dream destination, we've set our sights on the ancient wonders of Egypt. From the majestic pyramids of Giza to the historic temples of Luxor, Egypt offers a treasure trove of archaeological marvels waiting to be explored. We envision cruising along the Nile River, exploring ancient ruins, and immersing ourselves in the rich history and culture of this fascinating land. Experiencing the bustling markets of Cairo, marveling at the beauty of the Valley of the Kings, and embarking on a desert safari to discover hidden oases and Bedouin villages will be an unforgettable journey of discovery and adventure amidst the timeless beauty of Egypt.
