A-Ma Temple, also called Ma Kok Miu, is one of Macau’s most famous, and oldest, monuments, having been built in 1488. It was constructed on the cliff of a mountain, located in the southeastern part of the Macau Peninsula. The entrance to the temple is guarded by a pair of exquisitely carved realistic stone lions. The temple is an ancient building with classic Chinese cultural characteristics, a towering construct of ancient wood. The thick scent of incense wafts out of A-Ma Temple from the many burning cones, and can be found burning all year round. The temple is a popular destination to visit during Spring Festival and Mazu Bao’s birthday.
one of the most historical temple of macau.
One of the most famous Buddha halls in Macau, as well as one of the oldest. It is made of six main parts and represents one of the finest examples of Chinese religious architecture.
A very interesting temple to visit. As you climb to the top you will see many different types of incense burning and people offering their prayers. Upon our descent we were rewarded with a troupe of lion dancers practicing for an upcoming performance in the square. It was a lovely surprise.
The oldest temple in Macau (constructed in 1488) and intertwined with the story of Macau's founding, this is a must-see for history buffs or if you're interested in Eastern religions. Interestingly, despite its colonial past, a very large majority of locals are Buddhist. The temple honours "Mazu" - the sea goddess and patron of fishermen. Come for some peace and quiet, light an incense stick, and take in the views.
I have made a good wish, and I believe it will come true!
