Stachus is a large square in the center of Munich, southern Germany. The square was officially named Karlsplatz in 1797 after the unpopular Bavarian elector Charles Theodore (Charles Theodore). Locals in Munich rarely use the name, and only call the square Stachus after the bar once owned by Eustachius Föderl (where it was until construction work at Karlsplatz began). Even the U-Bahn and S-Bahn announcements use unofficial names.
