In the past, Ngasem market was the center of the famous bird market in Yogyakarta. Various types of birds and pets are marketed in this market. This market is also busy because it is the gateway to the Tamansari Water Palace from the north. Due to urban planning, in 2010 this market was moved to a new location called the Yogyakarta Animal and Ornamental Plants Market (PASTY). The PASTY location is actually quite far from the Ngasem Market location.

Javanese society cannot be separated from traditions and beliefs.[2] According to Javanese cultural roots, a man is considered successful if he has 5 main things, namely Wisma (house), wife (woman), turangga (horse), suspicious (kris), and pet bird (kukila).[2] Kukila is the reason for a Javanese man to keep birds so that the bird market becomes a place that is very much needed by the Javanese people.[2]
