Eurail Precautions

Traveling by train across Europe with a Eurail Pass is generally very safe. However, as with any form of travel, it's important to take some precautions to ensure your journey is as safe and enjoyable as possible. Here are some essential safety tips for Eurail travelers.

1. Keep Your Backpack in Sight

Always keep an eye on your belongings:

  • Never leave your backpack unattended: Even if you step out briefly, such as to get food or use the restroom, make sure your backpack is always within your sight or securely fastened.
  • Valuables in your daypack: Store important items like your passport, cash, laptop, camera, and phone in your daypack. This way, you only need to carry your daypack when you leave your seat.
  • Move during travel: The safest time to move around the train is while it's moving. This minimizes the risk of theft since potential thieves can't quickly escape with your belongings.

2. Safety While Sleeping in Train Stations

If you decide to sleep in a train station:

  • Use your backpack as a pillow: This helps deter theft by keeping your belongings close.
  • Wear your daypack: Sleep with your daypack on your front to keep it secure.
  • Stay near others: Choose a spot near other travelers. There's safety in numbers, even if it means enduring a bit more noise.

3. Double Your Backpack Security

Enhance security for your backpack:

  • Use a carabiner: Hook a bungee cord, string, or belt through your backpack strap and secure it to an overhead rack or the leg of your chair. This simple measure can deter thieves by making it difficult to quickly grab and run with your bag.

4. Safety on Night Trains

Traveling overnight on trains:

  • Sleeper carriages: If available, opt for a sleeper carriage where you can sleep in a bed. Store your backpack at one end of the bed and sleep with your feet on it.
  • Regular seats: If you're in a regular seat, stay alert. Wrap the strap of your daypack around your foot or use a carabiner to secure it.
  • Community vigilance: Remember, you're surrounded by other travelers who will likely wake up and alert you if something suspicious occurs.

5. General Tips and Advice

  • Stay aware: Always be conscious of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.
  • Research your route: Before traveling, look up reviews or comments about your specific train route to learn about any common issues or tips from other travelers.
  • Crowded areas: Choose carriages with more people if you don't have a reserved seat. Being around others can provide a sense of security.
  • Common sense: Use common sense and trust your instincts. Avoid dark, deserted areas, and don't leave your belongings out of sight.
