Most travelers should book one pair: Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East. It has the most trains, and its metro runs straight to West Lake. The ride takes 45 to 90 minutes, fastest taking nearly 45 minutes, but plan two to three hours door to door each way.

Two exceptions. Hangzhou Railway Station, known locally as Chengzhan, sits closer to the lake but sees far fewer Shanghai trains. A direct train from Shanghai Railway Station can suit travelers staying at a central hotel, when one runs at a good time.

The corridor is short and busy, with 120-plus high-speed pairs a day. That volume is the trap: a route-wide search blends stations and seat classes into one misleading range. You need a station pair, not a city pair, so compare total journey time, not headline speed.

Which Shanghai station should you depart from?

Match the station to your hotel. Hongqiao suits western Shanghai and the airport. A central hotel may do better from Shanghai Railway Station if a direct train lines up.

Three Shanghai terminals serve Hangzhou high-speed trains: Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai South. Shanghai Songjiang sits on the corridor too, but only helps travelers already in that area. One naming point matters. In a booking app, "Shanghai" is a city search that returns every terminal. Hongqiao carries most of this traffic, which is why it's the safe default. It's a big station, so leave extra minutes to walk from the metro to your gate.

Shanghai Railway Station, fewer trains, sometimes less total travel

Near People's Square, Jing'an or the Bund? A direct train here can beat a faster Hongqiao departure once you add the cross-city transfer. It only works when one runs at your time, so confirm with a dated search.

Shanghai South and Shanghai Songjiang, location-specific alternatives

Use these only when you are already nearby and a direct service appears on your date. For a first-time visitor staying downtown, they are rarely the first choice.

Hangzhou Railway Station (Chengzhan) is geographically closest to West Lake at about 2.3 km. Hangzhou East is usually more practical, because it has far more Shanghai trains and a direct metro line toward the lakeshore.

Hangzhou has four passenger stations, and travelers confuse them constantly. Distances to West Lake, by published figures: Hangzhou Railway Station about 2.3 km, Hangzhou East about 6.5 km, Hangzhou West about 17.5 km, Hangzhou South about 18 km. Closest is not the same as best. The extra trains and the direct metro at Hangzhou East often win back the distance.

Hangzhou East runs the bulk of Shanghai services, with the metro directly below. Line 1 reaches Longxiangqiao, the closest stop to the northeast shore, in about 20 minutes. Take a taxi instead with heavy bags or a group.

"Chengzhan" is the local name for Hangzhou Railway Station. It is the nearest station to West Lake, reachable by a short Line 1 ride or roughly a 20-minute walk. The trade-off is train choice. Fewer Shanghai departures serve it, so a closer arrival can still mean a worse schedule.

Hangzhou West fits western Hangzhou, Xixi Wetland or the tech district. Hangzhou South fits Xiaoshan and southern trips. Neither is a first choice for a West Lake day trip, given the distance.

What do second-, first- and business-class tickets cost?

Let's look at the benchmark fares first. A June 15, 2024 adjustment raised the second-class base fare, Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East, from 73 to 87 yuan. That's about a 19 percent rise, and ¥87 is a reference point, not the price you'll pay.

Arrive with your original passport, clear security, use the passport at a supported gate or a staffed lane, and be on the platform before boarding closes.

E-tickets are linked to your passport, so there is no paper ticket to collect. You use the same passport to enter the station, board and exit. Boarding opens about 15 minutes before departure, and the gate stops checking about 5 minutes before.
