After many years of delayed construction we stayed at the Ritz Carlton this past Sunday night. I grabbed a rate of $491 through the Marriott website which is comparable or a bit cheaper than other 5* hotels at the other end of town. The hotel is situated at the western end of the city near the main railway station which isn't the best location in Melb for a luxury hotel. However when pulling into the entrance to have the car valet parked ($75) it's another world. The guys at the entrance were friendly and very helpful. We were escorted to the lifts and whisked up to Level 80 for check in. We were given lots of information about the hotel and facilities and the man checking us in was pleasant and tole us that we were as close to the top on Level 77. The room is spacious with a separate toilet, luggage compartment and big bathroom with bath and a large desk. The views were incredible looking across the city to the east and the bay. Unfortunately our room was a couple of levels above the neighbouring tall building so I could hear the air con all night. As typical of luxury hotels the bed had too soft pillows for my liking and we should've asked for firmer pillows, I don't know why hotels continue to provide such soft pillows. I went to Level 64 for a swim in the shallow pool which was great with incredible views. We met friends and family for drinks in the lounge where the service was prompt and friendly but the drinks are very expensive which is to be expected of a luxury hotel. On the Sunday night near midnight there was a 3.8 richter earthquake in Melbourne but I didn't feel it but my wife said the building moved slightly and I did notice the clock had moved slightly. Breakfast on the long table is fantastic and we thought the breakfast was reasonably priced a la carte only with good selection available. I would stay here again given the right rate but keep in mind the hotel is a tram ride into the shopping and most of the restaurants are up the other end of the city.

This was a weekend ”staycation” for my 9yo son and I. For those not familiar with Melbourne note that the hotel is located at the Spencer Street end of the CBD so great if catching the skybus from the airport of watching the game at Marvel Stadium, not as good for the best shopping / dining that Melbourne has to offer which is more located up the other end where the Sofitel / Next Hotel / Grand Hyatt are located. Next hotel is the pick of the three is you're looking for accommodation at that end. Here is my honest feedback. Hotel is brand new in visually stunning - ooozes class and understated elegance. It's really a beautiful hotel and the views are truly amazing. We appreciated the upgrade to the Victoria Harbour view - it was stunning. The room was beautifully appointed - perfect. Service - overall good. Air con temperature in the room wasn’t working and it kept showing the temp as 22 degrees regardless of how low we set it. Needs fixing perhaps? Room telephone - pick up the phone and there is silence, could not call reception and ended up calling from the phone outside the lift. Sent the engineer over and he said that you have to press 'talk' when you pick up the handset. He said it happens all the time that guests think the phone is broken. Staff - wonderful and perfectly fit the Ritz brand. Turndown service never came, and we had to ask for fresh towels that night - when they arrived he said that he couldn’t access the room for some reason - maybe something to look into? Service at the Lounge was very slow - waited 25 for some vanilla ice cream, ended up taking it back to the room. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was the pool - it was SO cold. Probably explains why there was nobody in it. We were chatting to another guest who said exactly the same thing. You need to dial up the temperature. It's a real shame that we could not enjoy the pool as it could have been the highlight of the weekend. We were in and out in 5 minutes - so disappointing. The area around the pool is also quite cramped and really should have been made bigger but not much that can be done about that now. Also the pool area is not staffed which was a surprise for a hotel of this calibre. There is therefore no food / beverage service. As others have said... having to use two sets of elevators is really annoying to reach your room or ground floor but nothing that can be done about that now. I know some of these things are just ”teething” problems as it's still a new hotel. Hopefully they resolve in time.

The apartment was clean but very small. We got a message the day before to say we needed to pick up keys from an office, rather than the building. Instructions on how to find the building were minimal and not clear so it wasn’t easy to find while dragging bags. The apartment wasn’t set up as requested - we had booked for five people and we had to hunt for the linen etc. The air conditioning was faulty. The modem wasn’t switched on and despite signs not to touch it, we were told to turn it off and on! The dishwasher wasn’t on and the power switch was really difficult to access. We had multiple requests to the staff and responses were dismissive and rude. We would not recommend staying here as the area was deserted on the weekend with barely any food options.

Checked in, but did not unpack anything, before having to leave due to a Melbourne lockdown being announced. Lost three nights accommodation and repeated attempts to negotiate any resolution (i.e change dates, waiver of fees, or partial refund, were completely ignored. They did not even acknowledge my four emails, so i wasn't sure they'd got them. I eventually went through Booking.com who were good, and advised the Melbourne Private Apartments - Collins Wharf Waterfront, Docklands refused to assist, as they had minimal other income during lockdown periods. Stay somewhere else, these people are no good to deal with.

Reviews From Real Travelers
The hotel is new and located inside a heritage building. The public areas were beautifully designed and we wish we had a chance to dine at the restaurant to enjoy the space more. Booked a Deluxe King Room which had a city view but the lower floors would’ve been facing a wall. The room was nicely designed and spacious, with enough space for two large suitcases. The bed was comfortable; a bit on the soft side, but much better than some other hotels we stayed at during our trip. The quality of the sheets could be improved though as they were rough to touch and not the silky smooth you’d expect at a hotel. The bathroom was a bit small but still nicely done. More importantly, they proactively did housekeeping (which we’ve unfortunately learnt is not a given on our trip) and the front desk were professional and accommodating.

Had such a lovely stay here for my partner's birthday and everything went beyond perfect. We were very impressed with beautiful amenities in the room, the fabulous service, the delicious breakfast at Luci and in-room dining, the amazing cocktails at the Douglas Club and the new executive lounge. Would definitely be back and highly recommend if you're staying in Melbourne.

Superb location, in the beautiful old bank building, on the Collins Street with its big name, just a few minutes walk to the commercial street, a few minutes from the train station, very convenient, clean and tidy, free afternoon tea, room There is also a washing machine that can be used, kitchen utensils are super complete, you can cook for yourself and live very comfortably.

I went to the Great Ocean Road before, and I stayed at this hotel when I came back to Melbourne. The hotel has arranged a split-level room with everything you need to feel the unique charm of British management. Attach a room picture of two different styles for two nights.
