"I arrived |St. John's 6pm on an Air Canada flight from Halifax. The City of St. John's had been declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY. I took a taxi to the Monastery Hotel arriving there around 7pm. Everything in the City had been shutdown for 4 days except hotels and essential services and taxis. I asked at the front desk when I checked in if there was anywhere one could get something to eat....Absolutely everything was closed. Front desk staff said if I did find something to advise them as they would like to order something to eat as well. Approx 45 minutes later there was a knock on my hotel room door and a very nice young lady who had checked me in was at the door with a surprise COMPLIMENTARY dinner that was very good and very much appreciated. I did not ask where it came from as their cafe was closed. Anyway, it was a very pleasant surprise, and these 2 fabulous people that were on the front desk duty that evening deserve all the kudos in the world for going above and beyond to provide a tired hungry traveller with a dinner. Thank you Monastery Hotel....I will be back."
"We stayed in one of the rooms with a jacuzzi rather than the standard room. Given the fact that the room had a jacuzzi, you would think that there would be robes available for guests in the room. There was not... There wasn't even an information book in the room to let us know if the hotel offers it or where we would find them if they did. Worst thing, we decided to get in the jacuzzi and it didn't even fill up half way with us in it before the hot water ran out! I called the front desk to let them know and his response was, oh yeah sometimes that happens. Well, that's great to know. I wouldn't have booked a room with a jacuzzi in the first place. Actually, I wouldn't have booked a room here. The guy offered to come to our room but you know, we weren't in swimsuits and there wasn't a robe around so I told him not to bother. I'm not pleased with it here, I won't be back for hotel or spa services. We're currently sitting in bed watching TV which I certainly could have done anywhere. We will not be recommending them to anyone. We will be telling people about the experience here. We didn't get what we paid for. I could have booked something much more comfortable with a nicer bed for half of what we paid to stay here. If you are looking for a night out - stay home or stay somewhere else!"
"I came into Newfoundland to host a fitness seminar at Heavyweights Training Center and was overwhelmingly happy and surprised by the wonderful service and rooms at The Monastery Hotel. Everyone was incredibly sweet and kind and the rooms were VERY big and comfortable. I couldn't have been happier."

"We stayed for 5 nights and were assigned a most unique and spacious room with beautiful woodwork and a nice jacuzzi. The hotel took extra measures to sanitize the rooms and common areas during the pandemic. Our room was sealed on the door and even the TV remote control was placed inside a sealed plastic bag with our arrival date written on it. A clean and comfortable room. Despite the pandemic, there was an assortment of breakfast food items available. All processed food was individually wrapped for safety reasons and there were brown bags to carry items to the rooms. Murray Premises is located next to Water street and in easy walking distance to many downtown shops and restaurants/pubs. We really appreciated the hotel's free parking. Special thanks to Steve, Adam and Allie who graciously assisted us while we were there. They were most helpful. Murray Premises will definitely be our hotel of choice every time we visit St John's in the future."
"We booked the Murray Premesis for 2 nights in their executive King suite. The room was spacious, rustic, and comfortable, with a jacuzzi, electric fireplace, mini fridge, TV, and huge bathroom. We had never stayed at the Murray Premises before, but came highly recommended to us and I'm glad we booked. The building itself is full of character, and it's in a great downtown location. The elevator is a bit old, so if that makes you nervous I would recommend taking the stairs (we did). Our room was on the second floor overlooking the parking lot and harbour. During our two night stay, I dont think we heard another guest once. The room was very quiet and peaceful. My one minor complaint is that a free continental breakfast was supposed to be provided, and while they did inform us on arrival that they were unable to supply their usual buffet, I was still disappointed with the substitute. An assortment of muffins and fruit were laid out for guests in the lobby, but they weren't exactly the best quality. I completely understand the need for adjustments due to the pandemic, so this is really only a nitpick. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay!"
"Good basic facilities and adjoined restaurants so a few busy days can be spent inside the hotel. Certain rooms come with a board room attached which is really useful as a space to working away and can be a great place to hold meetings for 8 people. There are good restaurants and coffee shops near by all serving a range of food for every diet. I have been felt welcome here and have returned a few times."

"This hotel is conveniently located near the airport and very quiet- we could not hear any air traffic. The service is excellent, our room was comfortable and had all necessary amenities. Close to downtown St. John’s, we had a very short drive to all of the locations we wished to visit. We would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting St. John’s for any reason."
"The lobby is amazing. We stayed in a 2 room king suite. The beds were very comfortable. The decor was beautiful and it was very clean. The kids loved the water slide and pool. I missed the hot tub but due to covid totally understood why it wasn't open. Staff was friendly. The restaurant onsite was beautiful and the food was great. "
"We live in St. John's, had heard about the Wednesday night wing special at Amelia's and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed and will be going back. The wings, rings, and fries were crispy and hot. The beer was cold. Our server Colleen was friendly and efficient. The location is just gorgeous."

"This hotel is in a great location right on the harbourfront in the middle of town. When I first investigated it, reservations allowed me to access their very good CAA/AAA rate with an Australian car club card, but I saw a yet better new rate, stay three nights and pay for two. When I went to book it the next morning, however, the rate had disappeared, so I inquired what had happened. I was told that it was a promotion that wasn't approved and it shouldn't have been put on the website, but as I'd seen it I could have it. Now that's what I call top customer service. When I arrived Reception staff were super-friendly, made sure I could have my room though it was three hours before check-in time, and when they heard I had walked from St. John's airport they said I must be sure to stay hydrated and handed me a large bottle of mineral water. Nice. The room was fairly small but the bathroom was spacious; decor is modern Scandinavian, there's a desk with adjustable chair, and it's well supplied with power outlets and USB ports (and a Nespresso machine). Extremely comfortable bed and pillows, and a big TV with a huge range of stations. My room faced the harbour and the view of ships coming and going was great. There is also a sun terrace right on the waterfront, a lovely place to sit (socially distanced tables) in good weather. I'll definitely stay here again."
"Absolutely wonderful stay!! Beautiful rooms, very modern! Very clean and oh boy...what a stunning view! It's really worth spending the extra money to get a king room on the 5th floor facing directly over the harbour... the views are amazing! Feels like you are on a cruise ship as you walk into the room! The location is also perfect! Such a nice area to walk along the waterfront and stroll down Water and Duckworth Street! Lots of great locally owned boutique stores, restaurants and pubs! During this stay we had the most delicious fish and chips at The Duke of Duckworth Pub then had breakfast the next morning at the Bagel Cafe...both are highly, highly recommended!! We loved our stay at the Alt and would definitely go back again!!!"
"This is an absolutely beautiful (modern and contemporary all in one) hotel, AMAZING staff that go above and beyond for their guests, the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in, floor to ceiling window if you get the harbour view room, the coolest shower glass (in our room it was a floor to ceiling puffin glass that was see in the room and in the shower) and no early morning check-out time!!!!! DEFINITELY . worth staying here!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and they even had a Happy Anniversary card and chocolate bar from Newfoundland Chocolate Factory left on the bed for us when we arrived......VERY nice touch!!!! We will DEFINITELY be regulars!!!!!! Oh and only a 10mins walk or less to lots of restaurants, shopping and a brewery"

"We stayed here over Xmas. The check in was quick and efficient. The room had a great view, was large and well laid out. We tried the restaurant, Exile for dinner and had a great very tasty meal with an exceptional server. We asked for extra toiletries in the evening and were told they were locked up and we would get them in the morning. The night was good. A quiet sleep with a good bed. The next day we awoke and as we were leaving we asked for the toiletries and were told there were none and there wild be no cleaning services on the 25th or 26th!!! We have travelled all over the world for Xmas for the last 30 years and this is the first time we are ever heard of anything like this. I understand wanting to give staff vacation time but not having staff to clean is unusual. Having one staff come in to remove garbage and change towels is not to much to ask. We did manage to get towels later in the day. The front desk staff on the 25 and 26th seemed like they wanted to be anywhere but there. But I will say the lady on the night of the 26th was friendly. My wife has stayed at this hotel before and bragged it up, but All I can say is do not say at Xmas. There are much better values for your money in the area. I am unsure of if services are cut during other holiday times. Honestly is lacking from this hotel. They should say if services are not offered. It should not be something that needs to be found out through questions afterwards. I do not know if services were cut to give staff time off or to save money, but I suspect it was to save money as I think there were less than 10 rooms booked. In my opinion if you want to be promoted as an upscale hotel act like one. If you want to cut back on services during a period, close your doors for the holidays. We liked the location, loved the restaurant, enjoyed the view, were impressed by the decor of the lobby and entrance but unfortunately we cannot look past bad service and staff and cannot recommend this hotel. "
"Our experience at the Jag was top notch from start to finish. Great reception and checkin. Valet parking. Beautiful room with views of the city. The atmosphere and decor is hip and modern. The breakfast was delicious. We have dined at the superb Exile restaurant numerous times and it always is a pleasure. This time we decided to spend the night. So glad we did. Thanks to all the friendly staff and owner for making our experience so great!!"
"Great hotel, staff, location, meals! Great vibe / themes Awesome meal at Exile Restaurant Easy walk to downtown, shops, bars, restaurants, tourist spots and the waterfront. Covid precautions for the hotel are amazing but not intrusive to your experience. Super clean, making us even more relaxed. Can’t wait to go back!"

"The price of Ctrip is 2/3 of ihg's official website. It is quite good. It is also very close to the city and attractions. The facilities are very new and the rooms are large. It is highly recommended to stay in this home!"
"There are many parking spaces, not far from the airport, and less than 10 minutes walk. The hotel has a free shuttle bus to the airport every half hour. The swimming pool is small and it is OK to have children."
"The location is excellent, just inside the airport, opposite the gas station."

"I've heard this hotel is undergoing renovations. Unfortunately I was placed on the first floor which is the last to receive these upgrades. Being not to my taste, out of date, and musty smelling is something I can look past. However I cannot look past the security risk. I checked into the hotel at around 10pm, placed my belongings in my room and went out for about an hour. When I returned I got ready for bed and called home. My husband asked if my hotel had a door. I said yes, there was the usual door to the hallway and a door to the adjoining room. He said when he stayed there previously on a business trip his room had a door leading to a small ground level veranda. So I got up to check and behind a floor length window curtain, there was a door to the outside world - and it was OPEN! Completely open about 2-3 inches and unsecured right there at ground level. I had no idea this door was even there because of the curtain. I had to try to close the door several times before it latched properly. When I finally managed to close it I locked it for the remainder of my stay. My guess is that the last occupants of the room used the door and didn't realize the door wasn't properly shut. However, I would think that making sure the doors are properly closed and locked would be part of the cleaning staffs checklist. I kindly mentioned this issue to the front desk staff when I checked out, and their response was very nonchalant. It was as though they knew they had door problems and were used to the issue. I never even received a simple "Sorry that happened" apology. Any acknowledgement of the severity of the issue would have been appreciated. I hope that the renovations to this hotel include new doors, and better trained staff on all ends."
"Stayed three nights. No issue. Clean room, friendly staff. East side Mario’s for breakfast or supper. Close to the airport and downtown. Construction on going, but quiet. Updated hotel will be nice. Will stay again."
"I got the opportunity to go with my daughters volleyball team and we stayed here. The rooms weren’t fancy and the bathroom sink wasn’t in the bathroom. Room was cleaned well everyday but I will say the bed and pillows were some of the best I had in a hotel. It is well located to the university and not far from down town with stores close by. The only critic I would have is that I thought the buffet should have been open on the Friday since there was so many teams and needing lots of fuel for the long day of play. "
