Lovely cosy inn with great staff and good food. The thing that sets this place apart though is its location right beside the River Wharfe. It is absolutely stunning and right on the Dales Way so fabulous walks on the doorstep. The three mile walk in to Grassington will rate as one of the most scenic I have done. With cosy log fires blazing in the bar and lounge this was a real find for a winter break.

We were out walking in the area and decided to see if we could get a table here for lunch, without booking. The staff were very welcoming and found us a table even though the place was busy. I had roast lamb and my husband had roast beef with all the delicious trimmings. Service was quick and the food was a tasty Sunday treat. All the staff were friendly and engaging and I would highly recommend. Thanks to Dave at the bar for looking after us

We recently attended an evening dinner at the Red Lion for a party of thirty and the whole event was wonderful. Each course was delicious, served piping hot and cooked to perfection. All the staff members were friendly and attentive throughout our stay and our bedroom was gorgeous, spotless and really comfortable with lovely views of the river. Thanks have to go to Lindsay for helping us to organise our weekend and also Jess, the lovely young waitress for her cheerfulness during our meal and again at breakfast - which was superb by the way. Lots of good quality produce on the menu and nice selection of cereals, fruit and pastries too. Thank you - we will definitely be back!

We had to wait almost 20 minutes for a staff member to check us into our room even know there was no queue, staff was talking at the side of the bar and was not paying attention to who needed checking in . We managed to get some one’s attention eventually. After we checked in we decided to go for a drink at the bar agin very slow service it felt like they was purposely ignoring us. However when they did acknowledges, the young man behind the bar was apologetic. Just a shame the older lady behind the bar, who I assume is the manager didn’t seem to bother and continued her private conversation about her holiday to the young man behind the bar when we was trying to order our drinks. We didn’t book a table for dinner but they was more then happy to give us a table in the bar, the food was ok nothing special even know the price would suggested it should be. Starters came fast but we had our empty plates sat on our table for a long time and to our surprise our main came before they cleared them. Agin for the price I would expect better service. The young man who was behind the bar looked like he was doing everything and the lady just stood at the side of the bar, pointing and almost shouting at the staff to do things. ( couldn’t you get to start a country?) instead of asking the young staff who are already run off there feet ? The room was however really nice, very clean and well presented. Overall I would recommend staying here for the room only, drive 15-20 minutes out and your in a lovely town of skipton where there more then friendly and wouldn’t make you feel like an inconvenience to them. I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant, the service seriously lets the food down unless it’s normal for them to leave the starter plates on the table. The Manager we encountered, was rude and made us feel unwanted at best. But if it wasn’t for the young man behind the bar we would have packed our bags and left immediately. Breakfast was okay, but very unorganised. We have always enjoyed staying within the Daniel Thwaites group as there services is normally so much better. We have never come across such a rude and unfriendly atmosphere within one of there properties and unfortunately we will now be looking elsewhere when travelling around the uk.

We liked our relaxed stay at the Red Lion. Our quiet room enjoyed a delightful view onto the village green, river and bridge, and the Wharfedale fells beyond. The room was cosy and traditional, good quality hospitality tray (with plenty fresh milk), White Company toiletries, bath robes, comfy beds and good linen. We had dinner in the calming atmosphere of the restaurant (bar meals are also available), and it was excellent, with unpretentious wholesome fare. My carrot and sweet potato soup was first class, followed by a tasty veggie hot-pot with loads of seasonal veg. Hats off to the chef who doesn’t over season the food, but allows natural flavours to ‘sing’. Dishes and plates were piping hot. The house Sauvignon was as good as anywhere. Service was exemplary. Excellent cooked to order breakfast, with a prize-winning Eggs Florentine, and decent buffet-starters. Pity there’s no fresh fruit. Again, terrific service. The Red Lion is clearly hugely popular. The bar areas were full throughout the day (Sunday) and, being in a rural setting, the place welcomes dogs and muddy boots. So don’t expect posh/boutique/chic, but you’ll get no-nonsense good value, great Yorkshire service, and log fires to boot (even if the lounge is a bit dreary). Staff are so friendly and helpful. For example, we found our room rather chilly, despite the central heating. I requested an additional heater, and within about three minutes one was brought to our room. Loads of free parking, and wifi is reliable. Some ******* en route. The shower wasn’t consistently warm, and ran icy cold too often (we reported it to Reception). Headboard for the bed(s) needed, as the wall behind is now grubby. The pillows should definitely have pillow protectors under the pillowcases. These things can be rectified. The building is centuries old, so don’t expect windows to be totally wind-proof. Our bathroom window probably hadn’t closed properly for 200 years! (I guess there’s not much to be done about this.) We’d stay at the Red Lion again, for sure.

Lovely hotel and staff very friendly and accommodating. Shower was a little temperamental running hot and cold but a minor problem for us as overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Food was good and despite a wedding going on it was timely piping hot and service was excellent throughout our stay.

This was our first time staying at The Red Lion and I hope it won't be our last. We stayed for four nights, but would have stayed much longer if we could have. It was like home from home, but with much better food!!! We went for a 'character room', which was spacious and comfortable, and featured a king-sized bed, a large roll-top bath (with ample hot water on tap), twin wash basins and separate shower. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided, with fresh milk available from a fridge downstairs. After a day's walking in the Dales, we had the choice of chilling out in the snug or the main lounge area, both with log burners on the go. A mug of hot chocolate or a pint of Thwaites beer (usually both) also helped us relax before dinner. The menu was great, with a good, but not too extensive choice of dishes on offer. Everything we had was well-cooked and tasty. In addition, there is a specials board that changes every 2 - 3 days. The breakfast every day was also really good, well above the average pub/hotel breakfast. There were cereals, fruit juice and fruit available on a buffet, with hot food being cooked to order (both the kippers and the porridge were exceptionally good). However, the best thing about the place was the staff: every single one of them was friendly and couldn't do enough for us. They were attentive to our needs; absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was not at its busiest; they always had time for a chat and share local knowledge. Thank you for making our stay so good.

We were lucky enough to stay here for the night and we had a fantastic time. We booked a cottage which was ideal for our small family. Two bedrooms, one twin and one double. Beds were very comfy and the double was massive. The views are absolutely unrivalled, who could get bored looking out to the Dales and watching the wildlife along the river. The cottage is perfect if you want self catering as it’s well equipped with everything you would need. It was lovely and warm too. Enough comfy seating in the living room with beautiful views. Also had a small selection of books, games and DVDs. Check in was really easy and all the staff we met were friendly and chatty. We had an evening meal in the pub which we all agreed was delicious and a decent portion size, good wine choice too. After a good sleep, we had breakfast which was very tasty. Continental and full English are available (we had both!) We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again, probably for longer next time. Highly recommend to anyone visiting this area of the Yorkshire Dales
