We wife and I recently spent a fantastic week at the Hotel Unterhof in the beautiful Austrian village of Filzmoos (booked through Inghams). From the moment we arrived we could not have found the Director (Dieter) and his staff more friendly and welcoming. The hotel, as advertised, is a traditional Austrian hotel and for us, all the better for that. The hotel's facilities and gardens are lovingly maintained and the heated outside pool was especially welcoming and refreshing at the end of a long day of walking the mountains in mostly sunny and hot weather (personally I preferred standing under the ice cold pool side shower fed directly by water from the mountain!!!) Our room ('a landgenuss ,well worth the upgrade) was spotlessly clean and had an unbroken view to the bottom of the valley. It also had a balcony from which to enjoy the spectacular sun sets while drinking a beer or glass of wine. The bathroom with its shower over the bath (but no anti slip mat) could do with a make over and the separate toilet might well prove a little awkward to access by larger adults than ourselves. Despite these minor criticisms the room was spacious and was kept spotlessly clean by the staff who added a lovely touch by folding a towel in to the shape of an animal and leaving it on the bed each day! Our room also benefited from sound proofing which we thought was a massive benefit even more so during the skiing season!! Breakfast was served buffet style with a good choice of food catering for the taste of most European and British visitors. Dinner (5 courses) was also excellent. Choice of main dish was made at breakfast. There was always a meat dish, a fish dish and a vegetarian dish to choose from and they were all excellent. Credit must go to the hotels chef for this who clearly understands how to cook good food. My wife largely eats fish and it was always cooked to perfection (most unusual). The restaurant staff were always ready and willing to offer an alternative in order to meet any personal dietary needs. The service of food and drink at dinner was also excellent. Dieter runs a very tight ship. For us if there was anything to criticize it was the afternoon snack which was savory and not offered with a cup of tea. As others have said we would have preferred a cake and a cup of tea so we did not partake! At dinner there was also a charge for delivering free mountain water to the table even when ordering other drinks which we found rather irritating. Mountain water is provided free universally across the mountains at even the highest mountain huts and by the hotel at breakfast but not at dinner. The walking in Filzmoos is fantastic for a weeks holiday with plenty of choice for walkers of all abilities. There is something for everyone, spectacular mountains, beautiful views different things to see round round every corner and a tranquility that is hard to find anywhere these days. In conclusion if you want to spend a relaxed week enjoy
