Hotel Unterberghof

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. We stayed here for a ski-holiday and don't place high expectations on a hotel since we only use it to eat and sleep. the rest of the day, we're outside. However, the time spent in the hotel still matters and this was not our best experience. The rooms are 'correct'. Clean, everything works, nothing to add. Ski-lockers are 'correct' as well. There's one, and that's about it. small, so crowded during rush hour, and with heated boot-holders that were not really heating up. We were lucky with the weather, but in snowy conditions, I'm not sure if this would be sufficient to get dry boots overnight. Breakfast was probably the strongest point. A wide array of choices, quickly refilled when empty. Dinner had a fixed structure everyday. A salad bar and soup in a self-service part and a main dish and dessert, served at the table. During breakfast, you choose between meat, fish or vegetarian. We quickly realized that it's a good idea to fill up on the salad and soup because the main course is not that big. Quality is quite good, with some odd choices that would not fit well with picky eaters. Salad bar is the same everyday but with about 10 different vegetables (plus sauces and croutons) there's ample choice. positive during dinner is that a bottle of wine can be kept for tomorrow. We can discuss the number of stars this hotel has, but for the money we paid, I could give this experience 4* My mixed feelings that I mentioned above are mainly linked to the staff. We experienced them as 'in your face', ranging from your typical 'funny man' with jokes in Austrian that we didn't get and felt as if we offended him, the 'mater familias' who helped you choose coffee and therefore just takes the cup out of your hand, and the restaurant manager who's volume knob is permanently set to 9. In terms of how a guest wants to be treated at a 4-star hotel, it's close to unmannered. Just read a few negative reviews here on Tripadvisor, you'll see we're not alone. The more discrete approach of one of the waiters sat a whole lot better with us. Given the big difference with his colleagues, it almost felt apologetic. The bar and restaurant were recently refurbished and look really nice, but this again clashes with the 'in your face' staff. we did not use the wellness facilities so we cannot comment on this. The playground outside you see in the foto's is not part of the hotel. It's right next door and a great place for kids, but open to the entire village. For a skiing trip with intermediate skiers, Flachau is a great place. We might return to this hotel but with a different mindset towards our expectations. And maybe rent a ski-locker in the Achterjet-building to avoid the small lockers in the hotel. 4 * for the hotel 2 * for the staff 5 * for the discrete waiter 3,5 * for the food
