Staff book you in at 3pm ask for your breakfast list and take your money - advanced payment. No bar No restaurant. room was on third floor no offer of help to get bags there. On entering the room all looked good BUT 1 sheet of toilet roll led to a phone call, which has to be made by your mobile as there are no working phones in the room. Leaving a message on the answering machine! Had a bath to see there was 1 robe provided for 2 people!! We had a massive key to take out that night and the next morning at breakfast after stating on the form what we wanted was served with 3 slices of toasts. We had asked for 3 for me and 2 for my wife. When we got the attention of staff warm bread was brought to us after we had finished breakfast! No point in the form. Staff leave at 6pm and come back in to make breakfast its as friendly as a morgue will not be returning. £150 for the night!!

We arrived in the dark and couldn't see the coded pad to enter for our self check in. I must admit it was a bit confusing as the entrance itself with all the doors on the hotel shut and no signage. For me self check-in is more for when you are staying in an air b'n'b or an aparthotel. There was no signage to help us find where we needed to go. It felt very impersonal with nobody there. Also i was unsure how i was supposed to pay as that wasn't included on my welcome message. However the room was excellent, it was like walking into a Charles Dickens novel. Stunning, so clean and everything we needed. We enjoyed our night, didn't opt for breakfast as we didn't know what we wanted to eat in the morning when we were still full from dinner. The breakfast options were okay not much to offer with the hot option. I can't speak on the quality of the food as we chose not to partake. Our check out was a completely different experience, staff to interact with whilst paying and giving back the room key. Even though i had limited interaction with the staff i cannot fault them, friendly, welcoming and perfect hosts. I will definitely stay here again but i sincerely hope the bar is open with options for food in the evenings and self check in is gone. It just really spoiled our experience of such an incredible hotel.

Beautiful building, friendly staff especially the lady with pink hair. Very good location, feels very air bnb as self check in with key pad on door and no one to welcome you on arrival, the hotel has no staff present apart from in the morning when they serve breakfast, great looking bar but it’s unused and shut down. Missing a trick. Rooms are very warm, breakfast very good and filling, great coffee.

Stayed Friday to Sunday and everything was great. Unusual Victorian decor was pleasing. Private free car park was nearby but up a short steep hill. Staff very welcoming and communal areas clean and tidy. Room was lovely both comfortable and clean as was the shower room. Great view over the front and river from the second floor window. The breakfast, pre ordered the evening before, was excellent. Would happily stay again

This is the second time we’ve stayed in this place’ first time was in 2006, it’s such a well run spotlessly clean untouched by modern decor Establishment’ The young lady who served us was a credit to Hodgkinsons.she is a great Chef too. please don’t had new technology to this Gem of a place, It does not need it. You won’t be disappointed in your stay in this Special Hotel.

I love hotels that are a bit different. This one has real history, and it's great to see the current owners have embraced it. We stayed for 2 nights and we'll no doubt go back again. The room was very big and extremely comfortable. This is important to us, as we tend to have very busy days on our trips away, and need a relaxing room in the evening. Despite being an old building it was very warm too! The owner, Chris, gave us lots of helpful advice, for this trip and the next one. The other thing to mention was the breakfast. This was very high-end. Time had clearly been taken to source good, local produce, and the meat was especially delicious. They operate a system whereby you select your breakfast options the night before - this works really well, as your food is more or less waiting for you when you sit down, especially helpful when you have a bus or train to catch! One of the best small hotels I've ever stayed in.

I received a kindly welcome from the owner when I arrived late evening to stay for three nights whilst I worked locally. After reviewing the pictures on trip advisor I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel. While the reality fell quite far short of what the images lead me to imagine - I want to add that it is certainly not a ‘poor’ hotel. In fact it’s more of a quirky B&B. If you’re looking for somewhere to lay your head while you explore the local area, this might be perfect for you. But it’s not a hotel you would want to hang out and relax in. The main disappointments for me were, a) the cold temperature of the hotel; the absolutely charming chef/waitress cooked and served my delicious breakfast in a hat, scarf and coat. And I ate it wearing my coat too! Lovely breakfast, terrible atmosphere. b) The room I stayed in didn’t look like any of the attractive pictures, but was a very small double with a view onto a wall. I made sure I was in there for as little time as possible. c) The lounge looked warm & welcoming in the images too and I imagined doing a bit of work in the lounge on my laptop with a beer next to a log fire in the evenings. But the bar was never open/manned and the fire was never lit while I stayed. In the defence of the hotel though, this was hardly surprising, as over a three day period I didn’t see one single other resident or any other staff member, except for the girl who served me for breakfast - so it would have been uneconomical to man the bar or heat the lounge for just one person, who might not even turn up. I do get it. I just didn’t expect it. d) It is a quite expensive, arguably overpriced Hotel in my view. Therefore I do wonder, if it is true that I really was the only one in the hotel, why they didn’t decide to upgrade me to a bigger, nicer room. This point is a bit presumptuous of course, but it’s what I would’ve done. Lastly, I am aware that the owner of this hotel has just sold it in favour of retirement. I spoke to some local people about the hotel who told me that, in years gone by, The Hodgkinson’s Hotel and restaurant was the venue where local people would book for treat but that it has become very tired over time. I can certainly imagine this place being restored to its former splendour and run by new, visionary & passionate owners. When that happens, I would certainly like to return to experience what they do with the place.
