Hotel Rio

Milan City Centre Milan|0.07km from Caffe Napoli - Duomo
The hotel is located right in the city centre about 50 metres from the Duomo and the underground station. Check-in and service was fast and efficient. The room was spotlessly clean and had shower, TV, fridge, air conditioning and free wi-fi. Breakfast selection was excellent with fresh bread and pastries, cured meats, cheese, cooked food, yoghurt with orange juice and freshly made coffee. As it’s right in the centre of the city there is some road noise. From the Duomo walk straight up Via Orefici and Via Dante (with lots of outdoor restaurants) to the castle and the town park behind it. From the Duomo, four stops on the yellow line of the metro (tickets cost €2 from the machines - cash or card) take you to Central Station. From here you can get to Bergamo, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore within an hour. Tickets can be bought from the machines or office and are €6-9 each way. For Lake Como either get the train to Varenna Esino then ferry to Bellagio, another ferry to Como and the train back to Milan or do it the other way round. There are two train stations in Como, Lago is right by the lake but the trains are slower, San Giovanni is on the edge of town with faster service. For the ferry between Como and Bellagio I recommend taking the slowest one that stops everywhere as it’s cheaper (€10 - pay at kiosk) and you get fantastic views as you zig-zag across the lake. I started off wondering how it could take 2 hours but finished wishing it would never end.

Matilde Boutique Hotel

Milan City Centre Milan|0.15km from Caffe Napoli - Duomo
We loved this boutique, Milanese hotel which couldn’t have a more central location: off Via Torino, literally a 2 minute walk from Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The experience was wholly positive beginning from the correspondence with Eleonora and Omema, who are both friendly, competent and professional. Yulia at the reception was great too! The decor of this hotel is well-thought-out, the rooms are spacious, practical, pleasing to the eye, the owners sure went all the way while remodeling as the materials used are certainly not on the cheap side. The amenities in the rooms are all-inclusive (they even provide a separate wash for the sensitive body parts). We are a family of 5 and requested 2 adjacent rooms, which we did - on the 5th floor (which was very convenient for us). The bed mattresses and pillows were so very comfortable and provided the essentials for an enjoyable sleep. The bathroom is huge and well divided: walk-in shower on the right, washing basin in the center and the toilet with the bidet on the left. Compartmentalized with beautiful glass doors (the one on the shower side being sandblasted for added privacy). Although I am a light sleeper, the sound of the tram didn’t bother me at all during the night. I believe the glass windows are well-insulated. Breakfast was served on the first floor and it caters to almost all tastes (including vegans and the ones who prefer milk substitutes). There’s a large array of choice and it is quite rich. You get to choose your coffee which is very tasty by the way (anticipated, since you are in Italy), not sure if you can get to choose your eggs, I hadn’t asked, since what was offered was more than satisfactory in every respect (breads, croissants, cheeses, cold-cuts, cereals, fruits, pastries salty and sweet, salads, cakes, juices, sparkling or mineral San Pelegrino, etc). They even allowed us to stay in one of the rooms till 14:00 whereas check-out is at 12:00 noon without any extra charge and they were kind enough to arrange a taxi airport service for us. Without a doubt, I would stay in Matilde again during my next visit in Milan!

very good choice, Magnificent room with a superb view of the Duomo. Comfortable, perfectly decorated, and equipped, it fulfills all the criteria for a stay full of magic ☺ We were in Milan at the beginning of May 22 and the welcome we received was friendly, courteous, clear and precise as we expected. Cleanliness, you can go there with your eyes closed (but that said between us would be a shame). We remain enchanted by the setting, we hope to return very soon. My eyes are still shining, thank you for this moment

The hotel, which is actually not a hotel but more of a bed and breakfast but without breakfast, is located less than 100 m from Cathedral Square. It is a bunk hotel and only has 7 rooms. We were lucky that someone from the staff was there because no one answered the phone. A man who is certainly the cleaning man opened the door and gave us our room at 1:00 p.m. The room was very functionally furnished. It has a refrigerator and television without English or German language programs. There is no way to cool the cooling pads because the refrigerator is very weak. It was difficult to get to the parking garage, which is 120 m away. The streets are narrow and the tram tracks still run in them. There is no contact person and there is no information folder in the room. You are on your own.

The location is good, but it's hard to find. You have to push many ways to find it after you get off your luggage. The most difficult thing is that if English is not good and Italian is not good, there is no way to connect. It says check in at three o’clock, but contacted and emailed them on the same day, and was told that they could check in at three to 40, otherwise they would have to go to the center half an hour away. Take the key from the station. Take the big luggage, just wait, you can't get in touch when you get there. Make customer service calls, international calls, ten to twenty minutes, no one answers, in short, stay in a hotel, too much brain-burning things go out.

Our travel agent booked this hotel and I figured that since the TripAdvisor score was pretty good, that this would be a good option. We were pretty disappointed. It's hard to deny how good the location is to the sites are as you are one block away from the Duomo and the other side of the piazza from the Vittorio Emmanuelle. The lobby is not impressive (which is fine) but the room wasn't either. It is modern-ish but lacking in charm or style. The walls were pretty marked up and the carpet had stains on it in addition to the wear and tear of a hotel carpet. Milan was hot when we were there. The A/C was marginal with the bathroom door open--we closed the bathroom door to keep the air conditioning in the bedroom but then the bathroom would become quite hot. The noise from the street trolleys could be heard from our bedroom. The staff was generally genial and accommodating.
