★★ 9.3 (64 reviews)

"After the Joker Xue concert at the Olympic Sports Center, I really didn't want to go all the way back to University Town. So I just booked a hostel nearby for a night, and the value for money was ridiculously good! It's right next to Shiqiaopu subway station, just a short walk to the left from Exit 6. It's directly accessible by both Line 1 and Line 5. The quadruple room wasn't cramped at all. Each bed had a blackout curtain and a bedside charging port, so you could draw the curtain for your own private space. The private bathroom was clean and odor-free, the bedding was spotless, and the bed itself was a very spacious 1.3 meters wide. Aside from a slight hum from the air conditioning (they even provided earplugs!), my sleep quality was fantastic. The common areas were an even bigger surprise! There's a coffee lounge, a gym, and even a laundry room with washer-dryer combos!"

Qianhe Zhixuan High-View Hotel (Jiefangbei Hongyadong) ★★★★
"Great location and a genuinely very nice room. The bed was comfortable, the shower was good, and overall the room itself was a very pleasant place to come back to after long days exploring Chongqing. The location was also excellent for getting around the city. The downsides were mostly around the building setup rather than the room itself. The hotel occupies part of a shared building, which meant security felt a bit lacking, as anyone could access the floors where guest rooms were located. Reception staff were professional, but came across as rather cold and overly serious rather than welcoming. The biggest frustration was the lifts. There were only three servicing the building, and they were painfully slow. Waiting 10–15 minutes for a lift wasn’t unusual, and once inside, they seemed determined to stop at almost every floor on the way down. Overall, a good stay thanks to the room and location, but the building access and dreadful lifts would make me think twice."

Chongqing Jiefangbei Hongya Cave Houju High-altitude River-view Hotel ★★★★
"Traveling to Chongqing with my little one, I specifically chose the family room at Houju High-Rise River View Hotel, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. The hotel is located in the heart of Jiefangbei, very close to Hongyadong and the pedestrian street, which made planning our routes with a child so much easier. The family room was spacious and not cramped, with a well-thought-out layout and a warm, playful decor that paid attention to small details. The entire room was spotlessly clean, the bedding was soft and comfortable, and the safety features were excellent, making me feel secure about my child playing there."

"I'm so glad I stayed here for a while. This place is amazing! Metro Lines 1 and 5 are right outside the hotel. Exit 6 of Shiqiaopu Station and you'll see the sign. The light rail is the best mode of transportation in Chongqing, and this location is incredibly convenient. The rooms are clean, tidy, and well-organized. The public areas are so stylishly designed; the owners have great taste! There are books, coffee, cocktails, and even hand drums, guitars, and accordions – all very charming old instruments. Crucially, all the amenities are complete. I'm so impressed! The housekeeper told me it's only been open for a few days, but I already see many guests staying here. The service is excellent, truly fantastic!"

Chongqing Hotels Guide: 6 Districts from Jiefangbei Riverfront to Wulong's Karst Peaks

About Chongqing

Chongqing is a sprawling metropolitan hub in southwestern China, where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers converge at Chaotianmen Wharf to form a striking urban landscape. Inbound tourist arrivals jumped 82.48% year-on-year from January to August 2025, drawn by landmarks like Hongya Cave, a multi-level complex of stilted buildings stacked up the Jialing River hillside in Yuzhong District (free entry, open daily 9am-11pm, lights on 7:30pm-11pm), and the 1,000-year-old Ciqikou Ancient Town with its warren of teahouses and artisan workshops in Shapingba. Beyond the city, the UNESCO-listed Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges (the largest group of natural stone arches in Asia, and a Transformers filming location) and the Dazu Rock Carvings pull travelers deep into the surrounding countryside.

Where to Stay in Chongqing

Jiefangbei & Hong Ya Dong

The city's commercial heart and its iconic riverfront skyline. Jiefangbei centers on the Liberation Monument pedestrian square, ringed by high-end malls and office towers; a few minutes' walk east, Hong Ya Dong delivers the iconic riverside spectacle of stilted buildings glowing after dark. Metro Lines 1 and 2 cross through, the Yangtze River cableway station is nearby, and Chaotianmen Wharf sits at the district's eastern edge where the two rivers meet.

When to Book Chongqing Hotels

  • Chongqing hotel rates drop 30-50% in winter (November to February), excluding the Lunar New Year period when demand surges across the city.
  • For visits during Chongqing's spring festival season (typically late January to February, sometimes extending into early March for Lantern Festival), book flights and hotels at least three months ahead, as domestic travel volumes peak in the city.
  • Avoid Chongqing during National Week (October 1-7): the city's top attractions are packed, hotel prices spike, and what is normally a 40-minute airport transfer to Jiefangbei can stretch far longer. Visit on a weekday in April or October instead.
  • Early March is Chongqing's value sweet spot: cherry blossoms begin blooming in the city's parks and hillsides, spring break crowds have not yet arrived, and airfare is typically at its cheapest.
  • July and August bring Chongqing's furnace heat (up to 43°C / 109°F), and hotels fill with domestic summer vacation travelers. If you must visit in summer, pick a hotel near a Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao metro station with a pool so you can duck into air-conditioned malls during midday.
  • Chongqing hotels drop to roughly 40% off peak rates in December through February (excluding Lunar New Year), and attraction tickets often include winter discounts.
  • The best overall window for visiting Chongqing is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), with comfortable 15-25°C temperatures, fewer crowds than summer, and hotel rates that have not yet peaked.

Chongqing Travel Essentials

Getting Around

  • The Chongqing Metro (Rail Transit) is the most efficient way to navigate the city. Single-ride tickets are available at stations; foreign visitors can also pay via a passport-linked Alipay account (WeChat Pay may have limited foreign-card support).
  • The Chongqing Transportation Card (Yikatong) works across metro, buses, and the Yangtze River cableway, and can be purchased and topped up at any metro service counter.
  • Didi is the primary rideshare app in Chongqing, generally more affordable than taxis. A taxi from Chongqing Jiangbei Airport to the city center takes about 40 minutes, while Metro Line 3 and airport buses offer lower-cost alternatives.

What to Eat

  • Chongqing hotpot is the city's defining dish: a numbing-spicy (mala) broth built on beef tallow with dried chili and Sichuan peppercorn, traditionally served in a nine-grid pot where each section runs at a different temperature and oil concentration.
  • The three classic must-order hotpot items are ox stomach (tripe), duck intestine, and large artery. For a less adventurous start, try Chongqing mala beef, thin slices coated in dried chili flakes and ground Sichuan pepper, cooked briefly in the broth.
  • Beyond hotpot, Chongqing xiaomian (noodles) and street food stalls across the city are essential local food experiences. Pipayuan Shiweixian Hot Pot on Nanshan Mountain seats over 700 tables in a loquat garden where diners can pick fresh loquats in May and June.

Entry Requirements

  • As of 2026, nationals from 48 countries, including most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil, can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism or business.
  • China also offers a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy for 55 nationalities at 60 ports across 24 provinces, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with a valid onward ticket required.
  • China's official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate payments nationwide; credit cards are accepted at major hotels and tourist venues.

Weather

  • The best time to visit Chongqing is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when temperatures range 15-28°C with comfortable humidity and clearer skies, ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and river cruises.
  • Chongqing summers (June-August) are furnace-like: temperatures often exceed 35°C and can reach 43°C, with extreme humidity making outdoor activity difficult; locals call it one of China's "Three Furnaces."
  • Winter (December-February) is mild but persistently foggy, with average temperatures of 5-13°C. Snowfall is rare but the damp chill makes warm coats necessary; this is the best season for hotpot and hot springs, and hotel prices drop 30-50% during this window (excluding Lunar New Year).

※ Prices and policies vary by season and are subject to change. Confirm with official sources before booking.
