We were invited by a group of friends to visit Goldsborough Hall for dinner, and an overnight stop. We only live 20 minutes drive from the Hall but have never been there before, despite living locally since 1999. On this occasion one of our friends had spotted a special offer of the chefs tasting menu, and an overnight stop for a special promotional price. The Hall is beautiful, and rarely for this year, we had great weather on our arrival at 6pm, so the grounds and the buildings positively shone in the evening sun. A good start. We checked in, and went to our room, taking in the wonderful reception rooms in the place as we did so. Preparations for a wedding (to held the following day) were in process as we walked to our bedroom, and I can imagine that it would be truly memorable to hold a wedding here. Our room was spacious, modern and very comfortable. We repaired to the bar, and spent a very enjoyable hour or so drinking and chatting in the fine surroundings as our group (of 10) assembled from all corners of Yorkshire. The tasting menu was fabulous, a real showcase for what the chef can do. Far too much wine was consumed, so difficult for me to remember all the dishes due to a self inflicted memory loss. But it was hugely enjoyable, creative and very very tasty. We are minded to go back as a couple. It gave us a real sense of the chef's abilities, and it would be nice to think that this extended to an a la carte menu, but I can't see one on the website. Despite their usefulness as a guide to the chef's competence, I do find tasting menus to be a little 'unsatisfying' - it is just a personal view, and I'm sure others would diasgree. But I guess my thoughts are, look you've proved your point, this was an excellent way to sample your wares, but I'd now like to see your skill applied to a full menu where I can choose what I want to eat. Maybe I missed the a la carte on the website. To the next morning with most of us nursing slightly sore heads, and an excellent breakfast which was included as part of the package. So, all in all a great experience, which left me wanting more. This is, I guess, just as it should be.
