Hunguest Hotel Pelion ★★★

📍 Köztársaság tér 10, Tapolca

"Old unkept hotel that is not 4* but has monopoly over access to medicinal grotto, but avoid it if you can. Whilst staff at the front desk are doing their best they are unable to compensate for the serious shortcomings of this hotel that is nowhere near 4*. The issues list is long, starting with rooms smell of mould, smoke and harsh cleaning materials - in a hotel where significant portion of clients are visiting with respiratory illnesses (asthma, airway allergies) for the relief of the medicinal grotto, offering rooms like this is unacceptable. The room design is from the 1980s with carpet stains (most likely of harsh corrosive and smelly cleaning liquid mixed with mould) that stretch from one end of the room to another. Curtains would not have been washed this year (we stayed in December) the dust is actually visibly flying through the room. The bath section has long standing issues too. Whilst advertised as using healing thermal water that is not the case. The hotel has 2 small indoor pools, one of them extends outside and 1 summer pool. Bring winter the summer pool being closed was anticipated, but the fact that one of the 2 main pools (thereby 50% reduction!) was unexpected. The water temperature on the website is listed as 32-35C. In the hotel is it only 30-32 and even that was not achieved during our stay. The bath area itself was a construction zone. Guest were made to walk around plastic sheet covering the construction but its dust and noise filled pool area.Pool is not o my not wheelchair accessible but here are stairs everywhere without handrails, making extremely slippery. Lack of hangers for people to put their towels on near the pool entry increases the trip and fall risk. Staff was visibly bored, never once offering a helping hand to the mainly elderly and therefore frail guest. Half of the saunas were our of order - when guests inquired about it, the staff responded with rude “dont care “ Gym was a blast form the 1990s with machines so unkept that the torn fake leather was impossible to miss. Unannounced renovations weren’t just being done in the bath area but all over the hotel during our stay. We walked under exposed ceiling with electrical wires hanging out, used carpet pieces was tossed at us whilst waiting for the lift, the only space that was clean, modern and fresh was the wellness area with the beauty treatments. Well lit, bright and airy with polite staff the only 4* experience. Food. You can only book with half or full board and whilst the food itself is okay there is a reason why it is a buffet, they cannot handle anything else. We made the mistake of ordering lunch on our first day , 2 burgers and a pizza after we were advised thar the more compliment meals might take an extra 30mins…because…”renovation” this simple order took 35mins to cook and by the time it was served the burgers were dry and cold.. Overall, this hotel is a 3* hotel, surviving solely on its monopoly of dedicated access to the medicina"

"Room nr. 13 is in other building where is sauna and pool. That’s nice. But the room is street level and if you keep curtains open there’s open view to street. Also noise comes directly. Also quite darkness. If you have a choice don’t take this room."

"Love the hot jacuzzi and pool. Location wise is about 30mins walk to 'town' and attractions, 8mins to train station. Nearest restaurant is about 8-10mins walk. Everything was good, including my second night, the table lamp suddenly light up in the middle of the night around 1am. I called reception and the girl said technician needed an hour to come. However she came up to check and mange to off it after few attempts. I was not comfortable to stay in same room, she was kind to let me sleep in another room. Although I couldn't sleep well because of the incident, I still appreciate it. However when I check out the next morning, I expressed I wanted to feedback about the incident, the receptionist (a different lady) was very defensive and her attitude made me felt I was trying to creat problem. She said in harsh way that there is no *****, nothing happened before. In the first hand, I never say that there is *****, I just said I want to feedback about the light and I didn't get good sleep. The buffet breakfast and dinner are good. Overall I am happy with the hotel, except the final encounter with the receptionist during check out."

"After our stay in South Tyrol and Carinthia, the hotel fell short of 4 stars in all areas. Never 4S. A pool under maintenance (was not communicated), lifeguard unfriendly like most of the staff. I would give the food and the restaurant 3 stars, as well as the room service. The reception was friendly. Instead of a prosecco (welcome drink) we wanted a glass of white wine from Hungary. The request was refused and that in a 4S."

"We stayed in the Apart Hotel which is an annex to the Kalma one block away. Our room was in the attic with sky lights not windows so the sun baked the room when the temperature reached 95 degrees outside. In an evening we could not open the windows because the restaurant below had loud music until late at night. The bed was two singles pushed permanently together- no good if you wanted space and no good for snuggles. There was not even a bar of soap in the room let alone shower gel. The cooking facilities were basic but adequate. You should definitely visit Heviz but stay somewhere else that has air conditioning and doesn't have the gaul to charge for WiFi."

"A great location hotel. It’s just in front of the lake and a 20 minutes work from the train station. The lobby is spacious and the reception staff is helpful. The room is clean, quiet and comfortable with the lake view. It offers a complementary water and a kettle with teabags. The spa center is wonderful, but sometimes is crowded. The food is fine but the restaurant is very noisy with many kids crying and screaming."

"I do not recommend this hotel for visits. The reception staff speak English, but in most other parts of the hotel, communication in English is difficult. The restaurant provides no information about ingredients in the dishes, which is dangerous for people with food allergies. Guests with dietary restrictions are not properly informed or protected. Some of the medical staff were rude during procedures, making the experience uncomfortable and unprofessional. Most of the staff do not greet guests or say “Good morning” or “Good day,” showing a lack of basic hospitality. Overall, I was disappointed with the service and staff attitude. This hotel does not meet the standards expected from a 4-star spa destination."

"The hotel's foyer is impressive and particularly beautifully decorated around Christmas time with the large Christmas tree. The wellness area is well maintained, but unfortunately quite small. The breakfast buffet was a big disappointment this time, as the quality of the food on offer was far below the level of similar hotels in Austria. My room on the 6th floor was large, but somewhat sparsely furnished."
