There are many snow-capped mountains in the world, but the only one that allows such close contact is this: Muztagh Glacier Park❗ Mount Muztagh, with an altitude of 7509 meters, is known as the 'Father of Icebergs'. It is part of the Kunlun Mountain Range on the Pamir Plateau. To enter the park, one must first take a shuttle bus, then proceed on foot or by horse. Standing in front of the massive glacier, facing the heart-shaped ice lake, you can feel your heart beating wildly, with the sound of falling icicles in your ears, truly being healed by nature. It towers over 7500 meters, the third highest peak of the Kunlun Mountains. Its mountain shape is thick and gentle, majestic and towering, and in the hearts of people, it is the most unique one among the mountains of the Eastern Pamir Plateau. The area around Mount Muztagh is far from the ocean, surrounded by mountains on three sides. The moisture from the long journey of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean is blocked by the Tibetan Plateau, the Western Pamir Plateau, and many other mountain ranges. However, this cold and desolate land has not lost its vitality because of this. With its towering stature, Mount Muztagh captures the last of the moisture, forming a huge glacial center, nourishing the earth with meltwater from snow and ice. I went on a trip to Southern Xinjiang at the end of April, and drove to the Mustagh Ata Glacier twice. Here is a detailed guide based on the notes I read before the trip and my actual experience. ⏰Time: April 28th & April 30th 🏞️Location: Mustagh Ata Glacier Park 🎫Ticket: Starting from May 21, 2023, 💰50 (including round-trip car from the entrance of the scenic area to the entrance of the glacier) ⚠️Precautions: 1⃣️Mustagh Ata Glacier Park is about 220 kilometers away from Kashgar Old City, and it takes about 4-5 hours to drive along G314. It is about 70 kilometers away from Taxkorgan County, and it takes 1 hour to drive. 2⃣️The opening hours are 12:00-18:00 every day (it may be during the trial operation period, I went in at 11:00 in the morning that day), usually stop entering after 17:30, and close at any time depending on the weather. There are fewer people at noon but the glacier is backlit, and there are more people in the afternoon but the sun shines directly on the glacier which is more beautiful. If you have plenty of time, you can enter the scenic area at noon with some food and hot water and play more. 3⃣️There is about ten kilometers of mountain dirt road from the entrance of the scenic area to the entrance of the glacier, the road condition is very poor, and it takes about half an hour one way. When there are many people, there will be traffic jams and queues, and it will slip in rainy and snowy days, and the wheels often sink into the snow. The travel time budget should include this section, and at least 1 hour should be reserved for the round trip. 4⃣️After the vehicle arrives at the entrance of the glacier, there is a small section of mountain road to reach the glacier, where there will be local horse gangs soliciting business. It costs 100 one way and 200 round trip to ride a horse to the glacier, and the price is not negotiable. The horse gang said that the road is 2 kilometers one way, but I personally feel it's not that far. It takes 30 minutes to walk up slowly, and 10 minutes to walk down. I rode a horse up the mountain and walked down the mountain. It is recommended to decide according to physical conditions. The signal on the mountain is not good, it is best to prepare cash in advance if you ride a horse. 5⃣️Unlike nearby landscapes such as White Sand Lake and Bandire Blue Lake, the scenery is inferior in bad weather. Once the wind and snow blow in Mustagh Ata, the scenic area may be closed, and you need to pay real-time attention to weather changes. It is recommended to reserve buffer time. If the weather is not good from Kashgar to Taxkorgan County, you can try your luck on the return journey from Taxkorgan County to Kashgar. (On April 28, I couldn't enter Mustagh Ata for the first time because of the snow, and it was a sunny day on April 30) 6⃣️About self-driving into the scenic area, I saw many notes before departure saying that only four-wheel drive SUVs can enter. In fact, I drove a two-wheel drive SUV and only registered the license plate number at the entrance of the scenic area and was let go directly. I also saw some small cars going in. According to feedback from friends who just returned from Kashgar, the scenic area started to charge 🎫50 from May 21, 2023, including round-trip car from the entrance of the scenic area to the entrance of the glacier, which is more convenient and worry-free. Subsequent considerations may no longer need to consider self-driving related issues.
