Gusizhou Ruins

Ancient Sizhou was founded 1500 years ago. At that time, Emperor Wen of Sui dug the Luo Canal to divert the water of the Yellow River, through Kaifeng, Shangqiu, Lingbi, Xiaqiu to Linhuai (the opposite bank of the Huai River in today's Xuyi County) into the Huaihe River. During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, Sizhou Prefecture was relocated to Linhuai County. From Sizhou to Nanjing, Kaifeng, Luoyang and other important cities through Huaihe River, Canal, Bianhe River and Yangtze River, Sizhou has become an important transportation hub and waterway transportation center. More than 400 years ago, because the Yellow River seized the Bian into the Huaihe River, the water level of Hongze Lake continued to rise, and the inundation line moved. The roots of Sizhou City were soaked in water for a long time. In the nineteenth year of Kangxi (1680), the ancient city of Sizhou was finally flooded overnight. At present, most of the original site of Sizhou City has exposed the river beach, which is where the Hongze Lake has been deposited for more than 200 years. Experts estimate that most of the ruins of the ancient city were buried under the gardens of Flagstaff Beach and Chenggen Beach by the Huai River, facing the First Mountain across the river. With the development of archaeological excavations, the ancient city of Sizhou will gradually be revealed to the world.
