Honghe Hani Rice Terraces Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
The most beautiful travel destinations to set off in January
Picture 1-2 Sailimu Lake
In January, Sailimu Lake is more tranquil without the hustle and bustle of the peak tourist season. The movement of ice blocks makes the ice bubbles rise and fall.
It is known as the last tear of the Atlantic, with very clear water. When the lake is completely frozen, it will stage a blue ice scene that is no less than Lake Baikal.
Picture 3-4 Changbai Mountain
In January, Changbai Mountain seems to be in a fairy tale world, covered in silver and beautiful. You can enjoy the excitement and fun brought by snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding; you can also appreciate the magical rime landscape and feel the magic and grandeur of nature.
Picture 5-6 Yunnan · Yuanyang Terraces
Every year in December, the water is filled, and by January of the following year, it is the most beautiful time. Climbing to the top of the terraces, you can see the changing sea of clouds, the half-mountain villages that are looming, and the majestic view of the terraces. The scenery will change with the ethereal light and fog at any time, forming a beautiful landscape of mountains and fields.

Yuanyang: a photographer’s dream...providing the weather cooperates! From November to early spring, the incredible rice terraces are flooded with water in preparation of the next harvest. Crafted by hand by the Hani people in Yunnan, these rice terraces are an amazing feat of hard work, and are now recognised as a UNESCO heritage site.

Yuanyang is a photographer’s dream...providing the weather cooperates! From November to early spring, the incredible rice terraces here are flooded with water in preparation for the next harvest. It took around 3-4 hours driving from Kunming to reach these gorgeous rice terraces, but it was definitely worth it if you have the time to spare.
Top tip: If travelling as a group, I would recommend hiring a private driver to take you there and back in order to save as much time and energy as possible! The sightseeing platforms for the rice terraces are quite far apart, and there are some gorgeous villages you can visit in the area too, and navigating public buses and time schedules to hit all of the locations you’ll want might be a bit of a pain...

its very easy to access and you still can enjoy the feeling of being with Hani people. They are still working on their rice fields and living their normal life. Even though can be overcrowded at the view points. we avoid all that crowded place and take a walk on trails along the rice field. It makes so much sense, less people and able to enjoy the whole view on our own.

A Zhe Ke is a stunningly authentic village in the Honghe area of Yunnan. While here, we learned that locals will hold an annual banquet called the Long Street Banquet - every family will cook a dish or two, dress up and gather together with their neighbours to eat and celebrate.

Record of a two-day trip to Yuanyang on February 26 and 27, 2024
Sunrise🌅: Starts at 8:00, the golden edge appears at the Duoyishu Viewing Platform. The Moji Weather app shows sunrise at 7:30, but due to the sea of clouds, the golden edge appeared half an hour later than expected. It's all about luck,
Sunset🌇: Bada Viewing Platform and Dawazhe Viewing Platform. Personally, I find Dawazhe more stunning than Bada. Bada is too crowded, and it's really hard to get a good photo spot without getting there early, as it's packed with people. Dawazhe is only accessible by small car, more suitable for self-driving tourists, or you can ask locals to drive you there. It's closer to the terraces, and you can manage without a telephoto lens.
Hiking🚶🏻♀️: Dayutang-Full Fortune Village-Bada. In theory, all paths on the ridges are connected, and as long as you're going in the right direction, you can get through. There's no clear path from Dayutang to Full Fortune Village, but there is a clear path from Full Fortune Village to Bada Viewing Platform. It depends on how far you want to walk, each section is about 4 kilometers.⭐ If you're not good at balancing, please don't consider the section from Dayutang to Full Fortune Village, as it's all ridges. The path from Full Fortune Village to Bada is more established.
Additional charge for scenic spots outside the scenic area: Azheke ancient village, preserving the village gate and mushroom houses. The village implements a profit-sharing system, and you can see local elders living in the village, working and chatting in the fields. It's very comfortable when there are few people.
Winnowing Basket Feast🍜: Yuanyang produces red rice, so the rice is red. The winnowing basket feast is a spectacle during the New Year, and we also found a place to experience it, featuring local specialties.
🏨Accommodation in Yuanyang:
1️⃣Duoyishu is close to the core of the scenic area, but it's often damp. You can choose to stay at Love on the Road Inn or Idle Guesthouse for a slightly different experience. The advantage is that you don't need to drive to see the sunrise.
2️⃣If you don't want it too damp, you can choose Dayutang, which is a bit further away. Ha Wowo Peach Garden Homestay is a newly opened guesthouse, but you'll need to drive to see the sunrise.
3️⃣Chujian Yuanshan Guesthouse is also in the middle, and you'll need to drive to see the sunrise.
🍛Yuanyang Cuisine
1️⃣Must recommend, Hani Hotpot's old duck soup. It's best to book in advance. Freshly killed duck stewed with bamboo shoots is delicious. If you don't book in advance, you might miss out and only get chicken soup and stir-fried dishes.
2️⃣Tianshang Jiayuan in Dayutang offers local specialty stir-fries. The taste is quite good, with local flavors, and they can also prepare a winnowing basket feast.
That's about it! If you have any questions, see you in the comments section! I wish everyone can see the sunrise and sunset. Goodnight💤

The Hani people
❤ The Hani ethnic group sustains itself with terraced rice cultivation, and Hani women are especially hardworking. Walking through Hani villages, one sees women engaged in heavy and tiring labor, experiencing the incredible Hani culture.
📝 Between 384 and 362 BC, the Qin dynasty expanded rapidly, and the ancient Qiang people, a nomadic group living on the Tibetan Plateau, were attacked and dispersed, leading to the emergence of several branches with different names. 'He Yi' was a branch of the ancient Qiang people who migrated south. After settling by the Dadu River, they adapted to the local flat plains and the 'self-sprouting valleys' geographical environment and conditions, and began an agricultural life. Later, due to wars and other reasons, they were forced to leave their farming settlements and migrate again, entering the subtropical Ailao Mountains in Yunnan.
The Hani rice terracing system in the Ailao Mountain range, spanning over 200,000 mu, has a cultivation history of more than 1,300 years, nurturing about 1.26 million people from the Hani ethnic group and other 10 ethnic groups.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces~~ A'kouzhe Scenic Area
The Yuanyang Rice Terraces of A'kouzhe are a very distinctive terraced field, where 'A'kouzhe' means 'a lucky small place'. With a history of more than 160 years, the A'kouzhe village is situated at an altitude of over 1800 meters, shrouded in mist throughout the year. Below the village are terraced fields cascading down the mountainside, which tourists like to call 'the terraced fields above the clouds'. A'kouzhe village is one of the five key villages for the heritage application of the Hani Rice Terraces. The village has more than 60 thatched-roof mushroom houses, which experts consider to be the best-preserved traditional Hani architectural complex in Yuanyang County.

Watching the sunrise at Yuanyang Rice Terraces
I stayed overnight at Duoyishu in Yuanyang County, Honghe, planning to watch the sunrise at seven o'clock. Unfortunately, a heavy fog set in, shrouding everything in a grey haze, and it seemed unlikely that I would see the sunrise. Holding onto a sliver of hope, I got up early and parked 500 meters ahead on the roadside, then hiked to the viewing platform. This strategy paid off, as the narrow village road was jam-packed with cars, and the cacophony of voices and horns was incessant. Even the roadside chickens were disturbed, flying up to the branches to escape.
The official viewing platform required a 70-yuan ticket for entry and was crowded with people three layers deep. Next to it was a private house with an even better spot for watching the sunrise, charging 10 yuan per person on the rooftop. I went up early to secure a prime spot and sat on a small stool waiting for the fog to clear. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side, and I missed the magnificent sight of the sunrise casting golden light over the terraces. On the way back, I bought some roasted potatoes to eat. The people of Yunnan really love their dipping sauces, with different foods accompanied by different sauces, even roasted potatoes come with a special one, and it tasted quite good.
The owner of the guesthouse took us on a back path to the upper village of Duoyishu to see the terraces. His family lives in this old village. Along the way, he greeted acquaintances, and villagers were already at work in the fields, clearing duckweed from the water. The viewing platform at the end of the small path offered an excellent vantage point without any disturbances. Looking out, I saw endless, rolling hills of terraces cultivated by the Hani people over dozens of generations, a monumental and spectacular masterpiece. Leaving the village and heading towards the highway, I saw many beautiful terraces along the way. Everywhere I looked was a scene to behold, absolutely breathtaking!

In early spring in southeastern Yunnan, colors overflow between heaven and earth (Part 7): The terraced fields of Duoyishu
The Yuanyang terraced fields are grand in scale and majestic, stretching across the southern banks of the Red River in counties such as Honghe, Yuanyang, Lvchun, and Jinping. Within Yuanyang County alone, there are 170,000 mu of terraced fields. Among these, the Duoyishu scenic area, Bada scenic area, Qingkou Hani town, and Tiger Mouth (which has been damaged by mudslide disasters) are considered the most scenic spots.
The Duoyishu scenic area is a stronghold for photographers who love to capture the sunrise over the terraces.
Surrounded by mountains on three sides and dropping into a valley on the other, the sunrise here is spectacular, as the sunlight spills onto the terraced fields like cascading blocks of oil paint.
To see the sunrise, one must get up very early, before dawn. As we drive along the winding roads towards the destination, when the sky shows the first light of dawn, the Duoyishu scenic area is already bustling with people. Vehicles line the roads, and people are everywhere—on the foothills, on the roads, on the mountain slopes. Most of them are photographers, or at least photography enthusiasts. It turns out that these people arrived before dawn to capture the sunrise, their concentration is so intense. Passing by them inadvertently, one always hears the 'click, click' of camera shutters...
'Here it comes, everyone get ready.' Someone in the crowd shouts, and everyone springs into action, freezing in an instant, followed by the incessant sound of camera shutters, creating a moving symphony. People capture the changing scenery with their cameras, preserving it in their palms as a permanent treasure.
In the hearts of many, the Duoyishu terraced fields are the most magnificent in Yuanyang. Perhaps it is because the best time to view the Duoyishu terraced fields is in the early morning, or for some other reason, but I always feel that the Duoyishu terraced fields are the youngest, most vibrant, and most energetic.
When the dawn light filters through the top of Dongguanyin Mountain, the entire terraced field becomes orderly in light and shadow, with a harmonious arrangement. Some parts resemble galloping horses, others gentle sheep, and some like resting old bulls... all varied and innumerable in form.
With the mist rising with the wind, accompanied by the hazy fog, it is like a sleeping fairy, so handsome, elegant, and dignified, adding a touch of mystery and wonder.
As time passes, the dawn light shines on the glittering terraced fields, turning them golden, a dazzling and enchanting sight from any angle, a delightful experience of beauty. This is a clever combination of human work and nature, as well as a great spiritual legacy left by the Hani ancestors to their descendants and to the world.
With the air convection in the valley, the mist begins to rise, and under the glow of the morning sun, the clouds in the sea of clouds are dyed with brilliant colors, like brocade, like rouge, resembling a sea yet not a sea, and not a sea yet resembling one, a sight too beautiful for words. Sometimes the wind stirs up the clouds, unpredictable and ever-changing, sometimes like raging waves, powerful and distinctive.
The distant peaks appear like giant turtles wandering, sometimes hidden, sometimes visible, like bathing young girls, naturally beautiful and graceful. The floating mist gathers and disperses, fleeting in a moment, like the vast waves of the ocean, truly a picture of a fairyland palace.
When the mist clears, the valley is open, with villages laid out among them, and the combination of green mountains—sunrise—sea of clouds—terraced fields—mushroom houses forms a magical and wonderful painting.

Go to the place with wind | Stay in the Hani folk hotel
I finally came to experience the Yuanyang Hani terraces🪜 personally, it is indeed listed in the World Heritage List, the great masterpiece of the Hani people generation after generation
Choosing a hotel is very important, I have always adhered to the principle of wanting to deeply integrate into local life and live comfortably in selection
✨Environmental highlights:
The hotel is built in Quanfu Village, and it is in the same village with the local indigenous residents. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the room I chose face the terraced fields of ten thousand acres. In the morning🌄 or afternoon, you can feel the different color changes of the terraced fields. Sitting by the window drinking tea🫖 and daze is too enjoyable. The overall shape of the hotel maintains the original simple texture, and villagers will pass by to go to the fields or herd cattle (I also experienced it😌)
💁Room type service:
The room facilities are fully equipped, and the ethnic elements are retained as decoration. You can see that the boss is very attentive. In March, Yuanyang is a bit cold in the morning and evening🌬, and the floor heating is turned on as soon as you enter the door, and the floor is warm in a while
💰Average consumption:
The double bed room is about 500, two people can be together, the average is very suitable
🌲Surrounding play:
You can stroll around the village, take a look at the local people's life, the hotel can also organize to go to the terraced fields to touch fish, we felt it in the afternoon and the harvest was full, the dinner at night has crispy fried carp🐟, go to the top of the mountain Hani Elementary School, watching the sea of clouds in the morning is really beautiful.

The Culinary Crusader
Yunnan Red River Yuanyang Twelve Manor Xiangdian Hotel recommendation
📍The inn is located in the natural village within the core scenic area of the Yunnan Red River Hani Terraces, a World Cultural Heritage site, and is built close to the terraces. As you enter the lobby of the inn, the strong ethnic characteristics hit you in the face. The fire pit for barbecue, the hand-woven items on the wall, the wooden structure of the building frame and furniture, the lampshade modified from a chicken cage, and the wall filled with rice grains with a full concave-convex texture, all highlight a kind of primitive color and texture.
🏡The vast terraces are close at hand. The inn has sixteen view rooms, each with large floor-to-ceiling windows. Pull the curtains, and the vast terraces are right in front of you. Each window has a different terrace view. Different terrace views are presented to you in the morning, noon, and evening. You can order a cup of tea, flip through a book, and sit for a whole day. Of course, you can also lie in bed and watch; you can even watch while taking a bath.
🎬There are many fun places to play around, so you don't have to worry about where to go tomorrow. The inn can recommend a lot to you: take a walk early in the morning to watch the sunrise, come for a sunset in the evening, find a morning to go to the village fair, eat rice noodles and tofu, if you are not satisfied, put on a waterproof suit to touch fish and catch shrimp in the terraces, have a fire pit barbecue in the evening, and do you want to go to the rooftop to watch the stars at night?

With Yunnan, there is always a fate to go around, just like the winding mountain road, eighteen bends, this time finally came to Yuanyang. The universitys good girlfriends come from an old, lively and straightforward Sagittarius girl. The memory still retains her first cloud-leg mooncakes and cattle dry bar, which is my first impression of Yunnan. When the car passed the fruit market, I took a photo of Jackfruit, Plantain, Dragon Fruit, Rambutan. Send, she replied: Eat more fruits and vegetables~
arrive at the destination before dark. The enthusiastic Hani people greeted the already well-prepared boutique hotel - Twelve Manor and Fragrance.
The warmth of the hall is warm, and the room has fresh fragrance from the mountains and the fragrance of the earth. The decoration of the wood-colored bamboo and wood makes people unload all the exhaustion and looks out the window. Terraced fields.
There is a bathtub in each room, you can soak yourself in the water, soothe fatigue, it is very comfortable. I can't help but get tired. It seems like it's easy to fall asleep here, and it's very quiet outside.

It's the perfect time to make tea around the stove | Yuanyang Terraced Fields B&B
The mysterious nature can sketch such beautiful scenery like a poet, it turns out that poetry and the distance become so close at this moment. Instead of choosing the hustle and bustle of big cities, coming here with friends seems to have opened the door to another world🚪.
▫️Duoyi Tree Terraces: A natural masterpiece of nature, especially the color reflected by the morning sun on the water surface, it's really beautiful. The sunrise here is also known as the 'most dreamy sunrise in the world'🌄, because there are golden clouds, sea of clouds, the nearby Five Finger Mountain is too high, often shrouded in fog, and the sun must come out from there, immediately forming a spectacular view of the rosy clouds🌈, the colorful clouds reflected in the terraces are really beautiful~
Accommodation:
The fairyland in the photo can be seen as soon as the curtains are opened in the morning, the clouds are lingering like being wrapped in clouds☁️, the early clouds, the sunrise can be seen in the room, because here you can enjoy a 270° floor-to-ceiling window view, the design is simple and Nordic style gives a feeling of home, very warm.
There are quite a few room types, four types of rooms can choose large bed rooms and twin rooms with large balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, if you like lively, you can go to the lobby downstairs where there is a bar, karaoke, coffee☕️, if you don't like lively, you can also enjoy quiet alone time in the room.
🏞️Here, feeling the beauty of nature, the adjustment of mentality is really healed here, here is full of electricity, you can go back and fight for eight hundred rounds.
🔖There are many small mountain villages around, it's really high mountains and deep valleys, quiet enough to hear the birds singing, the difference between the mountain peaks and the river valleys here is several kilometers.
▫️Jianshui Ancient City Little Train
After coming here, I didn't see the golden rice in autumn, but I saw the sparkling paddy fields, sitting on the tourist train, the scenery on both sides of the route changes with the seasons, slowly spending a day here, each stop will stay for 30 minutes, get off the car to visit the local scenery and take a short break, it's quite worth experiencing.

From afar to the distant mountains, the troubles of escape are released here
Escaping from the big city to here, experiencing the beautiful scenery preserved by the Naxi people for generations, speaking the local dialect that everyone doesn't quite understand, but it seems to be understandable, they are hospitable~ Seeing everything here makes me return to the most simple time.
▫️Duo Yishu Terraces: It looks spectacular from a distance, and it's even more beautiful when you walk in. The moment you watch the sunrise here, the dawn light hits the terraces, surrounded by clouds and mist, only when you come here you know what it can be like, it's already beautiful on TV, and it's even more amazing on the scene.
Accommodation:
Four types of rooms🛏️ It's okay for one person or multiple people to come, there are multiple types of rooms such as double bed room, twin room and 270-degree sunrise sea of clouds panoramic double bed room🛌, the scenery is right outside the window here. This time I saw someone brought their kids, it's really good for kids to see this kind of natural beauty, they have been in the city for a long time and don't know what nature is like, it made the kids very happy.
Here I saw the boss's intentions, the decoration also took a lot of thought, the simple Nordic style also has a dining area🥯, book bar📖, bar area, self-service barbecue🍡, if possible, I really want to spend a lifetime here, invite three or five friends to retire here, you can breathe the freshest air every day and see the most beautiful scenery🌅
The viewing platform on the 4th floor is my favorite place to stay, just sitting there quietly by myself, letting go of everything, feeling like everything can be put down, my mind can really be empty, surrounded by clouds☁️, it's really comfortable.
▫️Azheke Village: The filming location of 'Forever Young', the scene is exactly the same as in the movie, as if being in it, I re-watched the movie on the way here, just to find those scenes in the movie, to achieve a high degree of restoration, it's really spectacular and impressive, you must come here when you come to this side.
📝There are many terraces around, they all seem to be quite close, I heard that you can see different beautiful scenery in different seasons, experience the changes of the four seasons, each season has beautiful scenery worth looking forward to.
🔖Tips: The temperature difference between morning and evening is still quite large, remember to wear more.
