I have stayed in this hotel quite a number of times and consistently the quality of my stay has been high. This time was no exception. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room and the bathroom were spotless and had everything I needed. The WiFi was complimentary and worked really well. The signal was strong and stable. There was one thing that I'd like to see changed though. You need to register every day, but the login process is confusing. After you've agreed to the terms and conditions and clicked on the button to get the free WiFi, another window pops up and it wants to know things from you. This is however not needed to sign up for the WiFi and seems to be purely for marketing purposes. By clicking on the right link, you can skip it. The room was not all that large, but the space was definitely adequate. There was more than enough space for my clothes and other things. The water boiler plus complimentary tea and coffee was convenient, just as the very large safety deposit box that easily fit my 15” laptop, plus other belongings. The work desk was small and especially with a regular chair, not suitable to work at for a longer period of time. The TV was small and had a limited set of channels, but that was not so relevant for me. A detail, but really useful, is that there are sufficient power outlets and at the right place. This makes it very easy to charge your devices. The bathroom was on the small side, but fully functional and the water pressure from the showerhead was more than sufficient. Only minor thing that I've noticed in the past too, is that it requires some engineering creativity to keep the showerhead in the right position. This should definitely be improved. It is annoying and unnecessary. Last, but not at all least, was the breakfast buffet. I really enjoyed it. This is mostly a continental style buffet, but with an amazing amount of choices, including various types of fresh and very tasty breads, yoghurts, fruits, cheeses, juices, cereal, etc. This is a great example to other hotels how to serve a healthy, yet delicious breakfast.

Mercure Aachen has best location for city centre so after staying multiple times in Novotel we thought we will give it a try. I was hesitating before as we generally don’t stay in three star hotels but I was curious. We booked their most premium room which looked like junior suite with furniture partition wall. I thought this will work for family stay with 16 years old. When we entered the room on the second floor we found ourselves in a depressing dark room with all space taken by bed and reclined sofa bed. I went downstairs to query that and was told that no other alternative was available for boyh nights. At this point I checked they had availability in Novotel and told reception we are not staying there. At this point alternative was suddenly found and we were presented with light corner room on 5th floor. It was light with terrace all around it and did not feel so cramped so we decided to stay there. All this treatment was dissapointing - especially that I am platinum member and they should gurantee me room availability. Not only I did not receive and upgrade (fair enough I already booked most expensive option) but they attempted to downgrade me and charge me for better! I am writing this for everybody else who expects so called privilege room as you may end up with nasty surprise! Breakfast was very average, nothing to praise. Housekeeping did not replace tea and took away extra cushion from my bed! The main street is noisy so one must sleep with windows closed which for somebody like me means waking up. Parking is across this busy street, please use Mercure entrance, otherwise it will cost you 5 Euros to leave wrong section of the parking. We decided to exit it as non hotel section of parking is easily accessible and did not feel safe at all. Upon checkout I was told I got small discount but when I checked my bill - confirmed rate plus parking - it did add up to what I paid so no discount was in fact was applied… Overall the only positive was a location. I would only return if they assure me I will get allocated what I booked!
