Wieliczka Salt Mine

Opening Hours: Open from 8:00am-5:00pm

Ticket Price: 66 PLN

Location: Daniłowicza 10, 32-020 Wieliczka, Poland

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, located near Krakow, Poland, is a salt mine that has been mined since the 13th century and has basically ceased production. The salt mine is 327 meters deep and over 300 kilometers long. There are rooms, chapels, and underground lakes in the salt mine, just like an underground city. In 1978, the Wieliczka Salt Mine was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Kim~ Keep on EXPloring: Wieliczka is the oldest salt mine in the world. It was established in the 13th century, but already people were using the salt from the site 6,000 years ago. Salt deposits in the mine come from over 13 million years ago. The mine is also one of the biggest in the world and it measures over 250 km. I’ve covered only 2 km of it during my three hour visit. In the mine, salt is everywhere: The walls, chambers, chapels, art, and even chandeliers are carved from the mine’s natural resource. Wieliczka salt is dark gray because of impurities in its composition: sandstone, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and other minerals. Still, it’s 90 percent sodium chloride. Although pure white salt has been the norm for over a century, gray salt was once highly valued, making up 20 percent of Poland’s economy during the Middle Ages

Phoebeeeee: The oldest and deepest salt mines in the world, magnificent and beautiful. There is a church inside, the tour guide said that it is amazing to have a wedding inside.

The Wawel Castle on the Wawel Hill in Krakow is the palace of the Polish emperors. Looking up at Wawel Castle, the red brick walls outside are as neat as the Great Wall, which contrasts with the pink walls and black tiles of the inner city. The existence of dragons can be found on the totems, badges, and rain drains of the eaves of Wawel Castle. The dragon has become the symbol of this city. It is rare that during World War II the whole of Poland was almost razed to the ground, but Krakow was not destroyed. It is also a must-see tourist attraction for tourists.

The Maria Church in Krakow is one of the most beautiful ancient Gothic buildings in Poland. It is 81 meters high and is a very eye-catching building around the square. It was built in memory of Maria. Maria Church has been the main cathedral in the city for centuries, and the church has the architectural style typical of early Christian churches. The building is constructed of handcrafted red bricks and the main body of the church was completed at the end of the 14th century. The interior decoration, the tower and the top of the church took a whole century to build. The Gothic spire was completed in 1478, and the golden crown on the spire was added in 1666, representing the crown of the then Polish Queen Maria. The tower is also used as a bell tower. There are five giant bells in it, which are equally famous from one to five o'clock on the hour, and the melodious bell can be heard even in the far suburbs. Every hour, the trumpeter on the church bell tower blows the trombone. According to records, it was handed down to commemorate a trumpeter who was loyal to his duties and stood firm in his post in resisting alien invasions in the Middle Ages.

Day 6 | Morning

Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory

Ticket Price: 139.00 PLN

Recommended Length of Stay: 2.0-3.0 Hours

Location: ul. Lipowa 4, Krakow, Poland

The Schindler Factory is a building in the Polish city of Krakow that used to be a metal machinery factory. There are now two museums in the Schindler Factory, the Krakow History Museum and the Krakow Museum of Modern Art.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Kim~ Keep on EXPloring: I 🖤 KRAKÓW Oskar Schindler was a German enterpreneur and a member of the Nazi party, NSDAP. He is credited with saving approximately 1100 Jews by employing them in his factories (so that they could avoid horrible living conditions and eventually death in the Nazi labor camps) – one of them located in Krakow, in the area of today’s Zabłocie district. Originally various enamelware objects were produced in the Schindler's factory; later on Schindler decided to also produce mess kits and ammunition shells for the Germans as he wanted to make sure that the factory would be regarded as an essential part of the war effort. Encouraged by his Jewish accountant to use Jews for labor, Schindler wound up sheltering an increasing number of Jewish workers as the Nazis forced them out of their jobs and into ghettos and, ultimately, forced labor camps. His story became well-known to the public thanks to the popular Steven Spielberg's movie, Schindler's list (1993), where Schindler was portrayed by Liam Neeson. I was in particularly intrigued by the display of Schindler's factory office, including his hulking wooden desk and creaking wood floors. This room also includes a display called "Survivors' Ark," a mountain of thousands of pieces of enameled pots of the type once manufactured in the factory, enclosed in a towering glass case. That Schindler was transformed from calculating businessman to humanitarian is amazing, and his acts of heroism in a time of brutality should not be diminished. Still, I did not find a visit to this museum an uplifting experience. There simply is too much sadness encased here, and in juxtaposition to the millions of Jews and others who were dehumanized and exterminated by the Nazis, the 1100 lives saved by Schindler seem mere grains of sand on a vast beach.

Day 6 | Afternoon

Krakow's Rynek Glowny Central Square nearby is the top choice before you leave Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory and hit the road.

Krakow's Rynek Glowny Central Square

Opening Hours: Open all day

Ticket Price: Free

Recommended Length of Stay: 1-1 Hours

Location: Center of Old Town, Krakow

The central square in Krakow can be called the largest medieval square in Europe. It is also a very exciting place in Krakow. It is warm and vibrant. Many people come to Krakow to experience the authentic local customs of Poland. The brick red Church of the Virgin Mary on the square is the symbol of Krakow, and when the sun shines, it emits a charming warm red. The textile hall with a white Renaissance building in the middle has now been converted into a shopping mall and a museum. The dazzling amber accessories, dishes, Polish dolls, gloves and sweaters in the shopping mall are the reasons why tourists love to stop. As the hour approaches, people walking and drinking coffee in the square will stop and pay their respects to the church - when the hour arrives, the small window at the top of the church bell tower will open and a golden trumpet sticks out , playing a piece of tune loudly, and after the end, the player will wave to the people below, so there will be whistles and applause from people in the square. The tradition of playing the trumpet is to commemorate the invasion of nomads from the Mongolian plateau in the 8th century, when an enemy soldier shot an arrow through the throat of the player at that time, and the sound stopped abruptly. To commemorate this soldier, until now, the horn sounded on the hour was abruptly terminated at that moment.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Berker: Even though its streets and architecture may seem to be a bit run-down and neglected, Kazimierz has its own irreplaceable atmosphere that can hardly be compared to any other place in Poland. Church of St Peter & Paul

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was built between 1597 and 1619. It is a Roman Catholic church in Baroque architectural style. The church building is very grand and worth seeing. The front of the church is made of dolomite, and above the main entrance is the emblem of the Church of Jesus. The interior of the church consists of a spacious nave and two aisles, most of which are decorated with stucco, and the top is by Giovanni Battista Falconi from Milan, which contains scenes of saints. On the square in front of the church stands several sculptures of apostles. The original statues were built in 1722 by Kacper Bażanka and designed by DawidHeel. These 18th century sculptures did not resist the corrosion of acid rain. Now we see Kazimierz Jęczmyk in the square. A modern replica made of the same material.
