Villa Gallici Hôtel & Spa

Aix-en-Provence|1.8km from Santons Richard
Is this the worst hotel I’ve stayed at? No. Was it good? Also no. Let me start with the positives. The property is gorgeously landscaped. You feel like you’re in a private oasis. The pool is very nice, but during peak summer hours the chairs are scarce. The breakfast buffet was fine. Restaurant staff were friendly enough. And on to the bad. I can’t believe this is a 5-star hotel. It’s overpriced and the rooms feel dated. The front desk employees were the least friendly we encountered during our 2+ week excursion in France. One evening we requested in advance that a taxi be called to take us into town. The gentleman at the desk said no problem. When we came back down to the lobby an hour later, a different woman was at the desk and said she had no record of our reservation and instead of offering to immediately call a taxi, sort of argued with us and continued to insist no such reservation existed. We were given the odd 2-story room…the bedroom was upstairs and the bathroom was down a narrow and steep flight of stairs. Overall it was annoying having to trek bath and forth. The room was also unbearably hot despite the ACs being on. We kept the window’s curtains closed during the day, but this didn’t seem to help. After a day of sightseeing, we came back to our room to find housekeeping had opened the curtain and turned off both AC units. It was absolutely miserable. The bed was uncomfortable, lumpy in areas. On the final night, we finally asked for a fan which they did provide. We had quite the unsettling experience when our hotel door was unlocked and 2 hotel employees appeared inside our door at nearly 11pm. I was dead asleep with earplugs in when they turned on the lights, we kind of just stared at each other and they finally closed the door. Completely bizarre. Finally, the location is subpar. While it’s only a 15-20 walk to the center of Aix, you really miss out on the charm of the town. Bottom line, I would never stay here again.

City Residence Aix En Provence

This business needs a huge overhaul. It is unacceptable to rob guests with such terrible accommodation. I had booked 10 days in this place. Upon my arrival after a long trip with my heavy backpack, the receptionist ignored me as I waited for her to greet me. What a greeting! 'You will need to bring your rubbish in the bin before you leave; you will be given fresh linen in four days; you need to sign in to the internet every time you use it; you will need to do the dishes before you leave' etc...No welcome words, only orders. I felt I was signing in to jail! I have been in hostels in the past, am well travelled and I manage my expectations, but this was far worse than any hostel, airbnb, hotel, or residence I have ever been to. Upon entering my studio - I would not call it an apartment, I found the shower head dirty, the wastebasket dirty, the walls bare of any decor except for a cheap frame. There was only ONE plastic hanger in the closet, with all the others broken. In the kitchen, there was a 2oz bottle of washing detergent and not much at all, not even a coffee maker, just a kettle. There was only one roll of toilet paper for my 10 day stay. No one was ever at the reception except early in the mornings. You could not reach anyone in the afternoon or evening. When I ran out of toilet paper, I asked on my way out to have a few rolls dropped in my room. Upon my return that night, nothing. Luckily I met some guests who were sitting outside (equally unhappy with the residence), who saved me and were most kind, bringing me a roll. When the next morning I asked for toilet paper again, after having left a note at the unstaffed reception desk, I was finally given some. But fresh towels after 4 days? The response was ”well, I don't know, I have to ask my colleague...” I could not believe the staff's attitude. I was happily able to find a place 8 days later and could not leave soon enough. (Unfortunately, in high season and at the last minute, accommodations are nearly impossible to find in Aix.)

Golden Tulip Aix EN Provence
4/570 Reviews
The Golden Tulip chain of hotels renovated this venue a couple of months ago, and created a very efficient, modern and comfortable hotel, very suitable for business and en-route stays. It's located next to the autoroute from Aix-en-Provence to Lyon. Downtown Aix is about a 10 mins. drive. The beds (as in all Golden Tulip hotels) are amongst the most comfortable we've ever slept in! Bathroom modern and efficient. The staff consist of mostly young, enthusiastic people with a modern attitude to service. Definitely a hotel that differs itself positively from the standard en-route French hotel-style! The restaurant should be upgraded somewhat. The menu is limited and as downtown is a bit out, guests should be able to have a bit more choice in the menu.
Hotel des Augustins

Probably the worst room I've stayed in since a trip to Omsk USSR in 1992. Look, I feel bad writing this because: 1/I really want to be positive and upbeat about Aix; 2/the hotel des augustins is very central and perfectly located; 3/staff were charming and delightful; 4/the room was cleaned to a very high standard. But look: our room just could not have been more dull and characterless if it tried. It had one large window that looked out onto an inner well with a giant boiler unit in constant operation. It therefore let little light into the room. To spell it out: My wife opened the curtain on first morning we were there and declared it was a beautifully sunny day in Aix. This was because she could just make out a tiny patch of blue sky at the top of the well. But I just couldn't believe her. From where I was sitting inside the room I assumed Aix must be profoundly overcast. The Room had no effective shower (just a shower head coming out of bath.) Decor miserable and brownish grey. Air conditioning unit was ancient. Toilet was France 1950s. Towels were thin and grim. But what really got me was that if we opened the hotel window at night (which in Sept you need to) the sound of the boiler unit was just deafening. On arrival in the room, of course, my wife and I scrambled to the phone, rang reception and begged for something better. But no they said, sorry: hotel was full. We paid £500 for three nights. Aix is not a cheap city and we found accommodation hard to find. But while Aix is a wonderful vibrant colourful place, it was all a bit too Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment in our room.

The level of the motel, there is no service, there is free parking suitable for self-driving tour, the room has kitchen equipment, can make a simple meal, this is good, breakfast is quite satisfactory.

The hotel is located in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the heart of the city centre, in the Dinner served in a restaurant type with a long meal. Bad food. Perfectly unexperienced staff. Water including chlorine-free. The hotel is a very nice and very comfortable room, and it is very nice to stay in the hotel. Apart from the center, it is impossible to walk out the evening to take a tour.
Hotel En Ville

I was travelling alone and as such was a little more aware of feeling safe and secure. I was greeted so warmly at this hotel, and each time I passed by reception, Sophie or Laurent made a point to speak with me, engage me in conversation, ask me about my day. On a trip that was sometimes a little lonely, this was especially welcome. I'd requested a superior room and was very pleased with the amenities and especially with the bathroom. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the room was very quiet, and the air conditioning was a welcome respite from the heat wave gripping France while I was there. The beautiful, quiet upper outdoor deck was a lovely space to get away from the bustle of the streets (Although La Rochelle is not particularly large, it is a popular tourist destination for French people so it was a bustling little town! But I want to be sure to specify that the hotel itself is on a quiet plaza and the immediate area is a few blocks removed from all of the hubbub.) I'd return here again without question and recommend it without reservation.
