Hotel Matelote

Very comfortable and spotless room in the heart of old Antwerp. Could not wish to have a better location. Excellent breakfast which is free if you book directly with the hotel. Owner/manger Eric is exceptional friendly and helpful in booking transport and making other suggestions.

This hotel is perfectly located, in a very quiet lane right in the historic centre. Very comfortable rooms, with all the usual amenities. The rooms we had were accessed by a small spiral staircase, so perhaps not ideal for those with mobility issues, but other rooms are available. Good quality breakfast. The owner is very friendly and helpful.

I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the place when I first arrived – there was no lift, although the stairs were manageable - but I was absolutely blown away by the place. The proprietor could not have been nicer, and spent several minutes going over a map he gave me and recommending the various Chris**as markets I wanted to see. He allowed me to check in around 10:30 AM and upgraded my room to one that was at the top of the hotel, which had exposed wood beams still supported by the pegs that had been driven into them hundreds and hundreds of years ago. The room was extremely spacious, the bathtub was amazing, and it was the coolest hotel I stayed in by far during my trip to Europe. There is no on-site parking available – you’re at a garage about a five minute walk away, but unlike other places I stayed while I was there I felt very safe navigating to the garage when I had to go to the car. I left before breakfast started, so I wasn’t able to check that out. Even though the Chris**as markets in Belgium I thought were a little disappointing compared to their brethren in Germany, this location is perfect to check them out. The overall hospitality and vibe of the hotel made it a fantastic stay! Highly recommend.

Very nice place right in the old town. Close to lots of food and drink and all the sights of Antwerp. The staff were also super nice and helpful.

Erik was lovely. Arriving early was not a problem and he helped us park the motorbike right outside. He gave us a map of Antwerp and pointed out places of interest. Really comfortable bed and good shower. Very quiet hotel with lovely little Mediterranean style terrace to sit and have coffee. Good breakfast with fresh bread and pastries. Can’t wait to go back to Antwerp and wouldn’t hesitate to go back to this hotel.

We were on a 'late decision' trip to Antwerp and found this pearl. Very good value for money with the perfect location, extremely friendly staff, cleanliness and nice details like a complimentary small prosecco. A small fridge always come in handy as well. We'd rather seen some soap/schampoo dispensers on the wall than the small plastic bottles, but still nice to have it included. We really enjoyed our stay in this cosy place.

If you are ok with stairs then this is the place to stay in Antwerp. A quirky old building right in the heart of the city. Eric made us very welcome and gave us great advice about where to visit. The hotel is only a few minutes away from the amazing museum Plantin, which celebrates printing , the early production of books, maps and atlases, the early development of medicine and pharmacy, and as an aside it is full of Ruben's paintings. It is possibly the best museum I have ever visited, unfortunately we only had an hour but we could easily have spent much more time there .

Really super little hotel just off the Grote Markt. Location can’t be beaten. Quiet street, really comfortable beds, great aircon, excellent shower and spotlessly clean. Owner really accommodating if the room is free the following day and you have a late flight. He let us keep the room long after official check out. Reasonably priced too. Would definitely stay here again.
