This is exactly the sort of hotel I normally prefer. As previous reviewers write, it is a special and historic building, but I think it has traded on that reputation for too long. Because I really want the hotel to succeed for another 200 years my review will be more critical than kind. It is a difficult time in Lebanon and not a time to invest money in hotels, but the Palmyra can improve without spending much more than a reasonable proportion of takings - plus a bit of time, attention and care. The staff are kind and helpful, but stair carpets, sockets, lighting and hot water, need some basic repairs to make guests comfortable and safe. As guests we felt secondary to people from the town who wandered in for a drink. Hotel information boasts that it contributes to the local economy - but we spoke to a few people in town who are disappointed that such an important hotel is - in their eyes - being neglected. In short, don't neglect this lovely and important building, stop trading off the past and invest at least time and care into your paying guests, and into the future.
