Having visited the hotel’s website and seen the pictures of the accommodations, I was in for a rude awakening when I got into my room. I expected a room that was simple, but bright and contemporary. I got a room that was dark, outdated, and unclean, and felt more like a hostel than a hotel. The bed was comfortable, and was the only thing in the room that felt clean. The furniture was dusty and uncared for. The shower and the shower door were caked with soap scum and mildew, and the ceiling was badly stained. The bathroom was tiled in the ugliest tile I’ve ever seen, and since it was brown, you couldn’t really tell how clean it was. If you need a cheap hotel and you’re traveling in summer, bring a fan. My room was on the second floor. Instead of a window, I had a door that opened onto a balcony that runs the entire length of the front of the building. It was rigged like a European window, but with the top of the door being only a few inches from the ceiling, it didn’t really help with ventilation. The only way to get any air in the room was to leave the balcony door completely open. I did that without too much worry because I knew that everyone on my floor was part of the group I was traveling with. But I certainly wouldn’t do that if I were traveling alone because anyone else with a door to the balcony could walk around on it and look inside the rooms, and even enter a room if the balcony door was open. Overall, my recommendation would be to stay here only if it’s your last resort. It’s certainly not a place your going to want to spend any time.

According to the website, you can expect a modern stay with charm and character. But the right thing would be worn and rustic. Maybe I was unlucky with the room, but the pictures published here unfortunately do not reflect reality. You can relax quite well for one night after a strenuous pilgrimage, but the accommodation is not recommended for more than that. In addition, the cleanliness left a lot to be desired, which may not be appetizing for sensitive people. None of the services described were available either. No free WiFi, a drinks machine that is empty and not working, and a kitchen that is in a state of cleanliness comparable to that in shared accommodation. The breakfast, which is often praised here, was also not that great. The selection was perfectly fine, but only served in the form of a small buffet over an extended counter. Since the hotel was probably fully booked over Pentecost and many people wanted to have breakfast at the same time, the staff could not keep up with refilling. For example, large cups for tea were missing despite repeated reminders over a long period of time, and the vacant tables were not cleaned and re-laid. That should not happen to such an experienced hotel. Despite the stress, the staff was always nice and polite.
