As an ex antique furniture dealer just wow! The drawing room with a brass inlayed, Regency tea table, the mirrors, the book trough, I could go on and on, more country house than tired. We had a suite and I think that it was recientaly decorated - bit confused that it had a fridge and microwave though. Lovely 19th century bow fronted, mahogany chest and antique writing table, bathroom v modern and the room was super clean. The welcome was good as was check out, love the building but I am missing something to understand why it is grade I listed, grade II yes but I don't understand why grade I, down to the local authority I suppose. So why only 3 stars? The food... Well, not so much the food, it is clear that the cheif is top of his game, it is the menu that lets things down. There is a set menu, the same every night made up of four starters and mains + around five options of fish and chips, in addition there is a specials menu of circa four starters and mains, only one veg option in all of this - it must be noted that even guests staying here are charged extra for vegitables with most meals. Maybe charge £5.00 a night more and include veg and a morning paper? One evening the specials included exactly the same fish and chips on the usual menu but £1.00 dearer. Breakfast was good but we soon realised that your order had to be specific, for instance Bubble and Sqeek is detailed as coming with eggs and bacon, my partner ordered it and got just Bubble and Sqeek, she was then told that if she wanted eggs and bacon she had to ask for it. Sadly the restaurant manager thinks that he is a bit of a comedian - he is not. Grabbing an 81 year old gentleman (my father) by his shoulders and shaking them as he is taking his time ordering icecream will never be funny. I will not even go into the 45 minute wait for the Sunday roast and the "dump" of food that was presented on our plates - clearly the chief does not work Sunday evenings. We only stayed four nights but had the same meal twice due to lack of choice, this hotel is not cheap to stay at, my parents have been many times before and sadly the food choice was such a let down this time we and they will not be returning. I do hate leaving a review such as this but think that it is only fair that I detail our expearence here, as a four we spent north of £1500.00 for four nights BB and evening meal including a few drinks and a light lunch.
