Building is really beautiful and hotel is very clean. Pool and gym area are both really clean too, pool towels are provided which is a really nice touch. Breakfast is small but yummy with options for vegetarians. Staff are on the whole very nice and can't do enough for you - particular shout out to Jim (I think) for being so lovely and polite and for helping us when we couldn't figure out how to work the TV in the room! There is WiFi, parking and the hotel is literally a minute's walk from the seafront. Would definitely recommend, would stay again!

Had a few days in Sidmouth and selected this hotel. Good location for town centre and beach. Very quirky layout with many steps up and down to get to the bedrooms. Car park layout clearly for when vehicles were smaller, but staff try to help and open up garden. Also nearby public parking available. Although didn't use them, nice to have swimming pool and gym available. Things were OK, but could be better, e.g. better quality loo paper; clear breakfast prices - nothing said about drinks and toast being additional cost. Pleasant staff; Henry did a sterling job filling in time showing us the layout of the building and some of its history whilst receptionist dealt with a long phone call.

As a single female traveller I was made to feel very welcome. I was able to access the on site car park and a lovely porter fetched my case from the car. There is a lift to the upper floors. My single room on the first floor wasn't pokey as some single rooms are as I have experienced in other hotels, and the bed was extremely comfy. Tea and coffee facilities in the room and a hairdryer. The en suite wasn't pokey either. The hotel was clean and all the staff were friendly. I only had breakfasts in the hotel but the staff worked so hard to ensure everything was right and the menu was varied and the food good. The pool was also very clean and a good size so I made full use of that. Personally I'd put a mirror in the ladies changing room. Pool towels are provided. The hotel is very near the sea front and from the drawing room windows on the first floor you can sit and see the sea. There are plenty of places to sit both indoors and out if sunny. The hotel is only 1/2 mile from the town so an easy walk to the shops, cinema etc. I had a lovely relaxing stay and would highly recommend.

As an ex antique furniture dealer just wow! The drawing room with a brass inlayed, Regency tea table, the mirrors, the book trough, I could go on and on, more country house than tired. We had a suite and I think that it was recientaly decorated - bit confused that it had a fridge and microwave though. Lovely 19th century bow fronted, mahogany chest and antique writing table, bathroom v modern and the room was super clean. The welcome was good as was check out, love the building but I am missing something to understand why it is grade I listed, grade II yes but I don't understand why grade I, down to the local authority I suppose. So why only 3 stars? The food... Well, not so much the food, it is clear that the cheif is top of his game, it is the menu that lets things down. There is a set menu, the same every night made up of four starters and mains + around five options of fish and chips, in addition there is a specials menu of circa four starters and mains, only one veg option in all of this - it must be noted that even guests staying here are charged extra for vegitables with most meals. Maybe charge £5.00 a night more and include veg and a morning paper? One evening the specials included exactly the same fish and chips on the usual menu but £1.00 dearer. Breakfast was good but we soon realised that your order had to be specific, for instance Bubble and Sqeek is detailed as coming with eggs and bacon, my partner ordered it and got just Bubble and Sqeek, she was then told that if she wanted eggs and bacon she had to ask for it. Sadly the restaurant manager thinks that he is a bit of a comedian - he is not. Grabbing an 81 year old gentleman (my father) by his shoulders and shaking them as he is taking his time ordering icecream will never be funny. I will not even go into the 45 minute wait for the Sunday roast and the "dump" of food that was presented on our plates - clearly the chief does not work Sunday evenings. We only stayed four nights but had the same meal twice due to lack of choice, this hotel is not cheap to stay at, my parents have been many times before and sadly the food choice was such a let down this time we and they will not be returning. I do hate leaving a review such as this but think that it is only fair that I detail our expearence here, as a four we spent north of £1500.00 for four nights BB and evening meal including a few drinks and a light lunch.

A really great location, this hotel is on a quiet road but close to the sea front and with sea views from the lounge and some rooms. The welcome was friendly. Unfortunately the rooms are a little tired with rickety furniture but some TLC could make this a really good place to stay.

I really appreciate the unique beauty of this Grade 1 Listed Building. Lovely furnishings, chandeliers, the lovely gardens also. An amazingly beautiful Drawing Room. The owners have obviously tried to maintain the high quality of this unique building . I have only stayed in the old building and this has been good. The staff have been friendly and professional. For me the only down-side has been the food. With breakfast I would have liked yogurt and fruit compote and I have to say I don't like mass-produced bread. At home although on a low income I always have organic artisan bread which I can access easily in South Devon. I would have liked a choice of yogurts too; I have to say I have had a better choice of breakfast items in B and Bs. I am a vegetarian and have quite a sensitive digestive system and this did not seem to be catered for.

Such a lovely hotel. We arrived in the afternoon, and were warmly greeted by the receptionist. We stayed in the Charles Room, and had a really wonderful stay there as the bathroom was modern with a nice power shower. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was the best I had ever experienced. The drawing room was art in itself, and the hotel was very cozy and homely. Only a five minute walk from the promenade, meaning you don’t need your car to get ice cream by the (pebble) beach. The amenities were also at a very high standard, with a clean heated pool and gym with new equipment. Very pleasant for a swim, even in the off-season. Only 15 mins away from the Donkey Sanctuary, and 1 hour from Exeter. Also very fascinating to know was how Queen Victoria once roamed the very floors as a young girl. To round it off, its like your own little castle.

We had a lovely stay here. We had a suite and a superior room, both were large, roomy and immaculate. The food was very good, service attentive. You never had to wait. The hotel is grade one listed, and is a hotel of character, it is to some degree old fashioned, but in a good way. It is better to book by telephoning them, as all the rooms are different, and for us it is worth paying the extra to be in a superior room.

We had a lovely weekend stay at the Royal Glen. A hotel with charm, and character. The staff & management were very friendly. Breakfast had many choices, and very nice . Great location, and only a minute walk to seafront, and 5 minute to cafes, restaurants and shops. I would recommend this hotel
