Siem Reap is Cambodia’s most well-known travel destination and the best place to visit Angkor monuments from, as they are located in the northern part of the city. From the ninth to the fifteenth century, it was the capital of the ancient Khmer Kingdom. Siem Reap was full of temples from different periods, and the ancient ruins have now been integrated with the tropical rain forest.
Angkor Wat is also known as Little Angkor. It is the most important and most famous scenic spot in Angkor. Its iconic lotus pagoda is printed on the national flag of Cambodia. The grand interior of the building and the fine carvings are the best of the Angkor monuments. Watching the iconic Angkor Wat sunrise is an experience in Siem Reap that tourists simply can’t miss.
Angkor's small circle refers to the Angkor Thom and its nearby temples. Angkor Thom is the kingdom of the ancient Khmer Kingdom, with city walls and moats. There are several famous temples inside the small circle, including the Bayon Temple, Chau Say Thevoda, the Ta Prohm Temple, where the Tomb Raider was filmed; and the Mount Bakheng, which is the best place to watch the sunset. Angkor's big circle refers to the temples that are a little farther around King City, including the magnificent Preah Khan; the Pre Rup from where you can view faraway scenery; the ancient hospital site of Nirvana Palace; the exquisite Banteay Kdei and the former bathing place the Royal Bath and so on. Angkor's outer circle refers to the more distant areas beyond Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. It usually includes the Banteay Srei, famous for its ornate reliefs; the little hill Kbal Spean; Beng Mealea and the renowned Roluos Group, which is regarded as the pioneer of the Khmer architectural art.
Siem Reap is famous for its Angkor Wat. As a tourist city, it has a fairly complete accommodation resources in Cambodia. Here you can find small budget hotels suitable for backpackers and mid-range hotels for around USD 50-60 a night. Of course, if your budget allows, Siem Reap is home to many high-end resorts as well. Hotels in Siem Reap are generally concentrated in the center of the city and near the old market. You can stay in the city for 3-4 nights and then go to Angkor Wat, Tonlé Sap, and other suburban attractions. To get there, chartering or taking a rickshaw is a good choice.
