📅My itinerary
Day 1⃣️: Chaozhou Ancient City - Paifang Street - Kaiyuan Temple - Xiangzi Bridge
Day 2⃣️: Chen Cizao's Former Residence - Zaiyang Teahouse
Day 3⃣️: Longhu Ancient Town - Return
-
🏯Attractions Introduction:
1⃣️Chaozhou Ancient City: There are many alleys in the ancient city that are very lively, many small shops are very exquisite and suitable for check-in, you can discover it slowly.
2⃣️Paifang Street: Actually, it is the main street of Chaozhou Ancient City, which is more commercial, just stroll around.
3⃣️Kaiyuan Temple: An ancient and elegant temple, the eaves bell is really beautiful, don't miss the lucky bags and oil paper lantern walls in the temple.
4⃣️Xiangzi Bridge: The legendary bridge crossing the river, it looks good with aerial photography. If you don't have aerial photography, you can look at it on the city wall or on the shore. Tickets are required to go up the bridge.
5⃣️Chen Cizao's Former Residence: The former residence of overseas Chinese, it's really beautiful for taking pictures. This place actually belongs to Shantou, and tickets are required. Here you can see the process of making oil paper lanterns.
6⃣️Zaiyang Teahouse: Pros and cons, personal choice. The main thing is that the cost performance is not high, but the environment is good.
7⃣️Longhu Ancient Town: Compared with the ancient city, I prefer it here. The atmosphere here is more lively and simple, and there are many very good coffee shops and teahouses.
-
🏨Accommodation recommendation: Don't live in the ancient city, firstly, the traffic is inconvenient, and it is difficult to carry luggage. Secondly, it is noisy in the ancient city, and the homestay rooms are also small. It is recommended to live in the new city area, a 15-minute journey, very convenient.
-
🍜Food recommendation: Beef Kway Teow, Beef Hot Pot, Kway Juice, Oil Gan Juice, Chaoshan Fresh Pickles, Fish Raw Duck Shit Fragrant Lemon Tea, don't miss these, you really have to taste. A food guide will be out later!
-
🚌Traffic recommendation: Chaozhou transportation is very convenient, high-speed rail can be done to Chaoshan Station, the airport is Jieyang Airport, it is more than half an hour's journey to the ancient city. It is not recommended to drive in the Chaozhou Ancient City, it is too congested, you can take a taxi.

Chaozhou Ancient City
Arrive at Chaoshan Station by high-speed rail, and take the K2 bus directly to Chaozhou Ancient City. The biggest feeling when you arrive in Chaozhou is that your stomach is not enough. Sashimi, pickles, clay pot porridge, rice noodles, beef hot pot, braised goose, herbal tea, it feels like it can't be arranged all at once. Even for eating, you have to stay at least two days, and you have to count the late-night snacks. Guangji Bridge is the focus of the trip to Chaozhou. The history of the bridge is needless to say. In order to understand the opening and closing of the bridge and the overall view in detail, you first need to take a long view on the Hanjiang Bridge. Choose the time before nine in the morning, at this time the bridge is not connected. After nine o'clock, the workers start to use the tugboat to drag the three floating boats docked on the side of the Han River to the center for connection. The process is very fast and it takes about 15 minutes to connect. After five o'clock in the evening, the floating boats are disassembled and towed to one side to dock. There is a light show at eight o'clock in the evening, the lights are very bright, which complements the majesty of Guangji Bridge.

Chaoshan Ancient City
Chaoshan Ancient City. What can I say about this amazing area of Chaoshan. The streets blooming with business. Lots of shops to buy souvenirs and cultural artifacts. The street food, the best! Delicious street food to fill your stomach! Let’s not forget the delicious drinks being sold on, traditional drinks for you to try. This area is the best place to be. Lots to do and lots to see. Head out there during the nighttime. You will love every second of it. #newyearadventure

Guangji Bridge Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
An ancient bridge in Guangdong has become popular, it is open during the day and splits into two at night
The scenes of relatives leaving and lovers separating often occur at the ferry crossing by the bridge. Standing at the head of the bridge, seeing the separation of relatives, it is inevitable to feel a sense of sorrow, and these strands of sorrow and bits of resentment have been transformed into beautiful texts and magnificent poems by literati, which are recited by people and add an artistic atmosphere to these ancient bridges. Today, let's walk into the Guangji Bridge, located opposite the Guangjimen City Tower on Huancheng East Road in Xiangqiao District, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, and see what different sceneries there are here. Although there are many similar ancient bridges in our country, the Guangji Bridge hidden in Guangdong is open during the day and splits into two at night, opening and closing for more than 800 years! Guangji Bridge, commonly known as Xiangzi Bridge, was built in the seventh year of Song Qiandao (1171 AD) and has a long history. Not only that, but it is also worth mentioning that it is also known as one of the 'Four Ancient Bridges of China' along with Zhaozhou Bridge, Luoyang Bridge, and Lugou Bridge. The surface of the Guangji Bridge is antique, the bridge spans the Han River, and combines beam bridges, arch bridges, and pontoon bridges into one, with a very special structure, which can be called a unique example in the history of bridges in our country.

Guang Ji Bridge
The Guang Ji Bridge in Han Jiang River. Another location to venture to. The Guangji bridge is a magnificent sight. The bridge is a fun place to take pictures and see the beauty of the Han Jiang River. The fun part of the bridge is the boat crossing. Hold on tight! Haha. The bridge was built to help merchants cross the river safely. While walking across the river, take lots of pictures and enjoy the wonderful architectural design. Enjoy the bridge. I highly recommend it. #newyearadventure

Lights, Camera, Action - Chaozhou Light Show
Chaozhou is a historical Guangdong city in the north east of the province near Shantou. There is an old saying “If you haven’t been to Chaozhou, you haven’t really been to Guangdong”.
It’s also a foodies heaven! But more about another day!
The Guangji bridge is one of China’s most greatest creations in bridge history. The middle part of the bridge is made of 18 parallel pontoon boats.
During the day you can walk along the bridge to the other side - as long as no boats are coming through, when you will see them takeaway the boats in the middle to let big boats through!
✨At nighttime, the Guangxi bridge is also home to mysterious light show - usually at 8pm and 9pm.
If you go to Chaozhou, it’s definitely worth staying overnight to enjoy the light show as well as the extensive food and tea culture - which all come out at night!
📍Guangji bridge is located at the Han riverside
💰 it’s free to watch the light show (To go on the bridge during the day is around 20-30rmb depending on ticket type)

Chaozhou (Teochew) is an excellent place to spend a weekend.
The most famous sight in Chaozhou is the Guangji Bridge 广济桥, partly consisting of stone towers with a pontoon section in the middle that can be opened by moving the wooden boats. The extant bridge is a modern reconstruction of the ancient original, but it looks convincing. It's a little bit dear to cross, but the ticket itself is a postage-paid postcard.
The old city of Chaozhou retains its ancient wall on the river side, which makes a nice spot for a stroll.
Visit the picturesque West Lake, 西湖, and then walk along Zhongshan Road towards the river to see many workshops where the traditional art of Chaozhou woodcarving is still practised. The temples and ancestral halls in the old town are richly decorated with such carving.
Finally, stroll along the century-old main street marked by dozens of memorial arches and try some tasty street food or buy some locally made satay sauce to take home.
Several trains a day go from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Chaoshan Station, from where you can get a bus to Chaozhou itself. Chaozhou is not very big, so you can easily visit it and neighbouring Shantou (Swatow) in a weekend.

Kaiyuan Temple
#familytrips2024
The family journey to Kaiyuan Temple was a mesmerizing dive into centuries-old Buddhist architecture and spiritual tranquility. Walking through the temple's ornate gates, we were enveloped in a serene atmosphere, filled with the scent of incense and the soft hum of chanting monks. Each intricate detail of the temple's design spoke volumes about its rich history and cultural significance, leaving us in awe of the craftsmanship and devotion that went into its creation. As we explored the vast temple complex, we couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over us, connecting us on a deeper level as a family amidst the timeless beauty of Kaiyuan Temple.
Dreaming forward, our next family adventure beckons us to the breathtaking landscapes of Banff National Park in Canada. We envision hiking through lush forests, marveling at turquoise lakes, and gazing in wonder at towering mountain peaks. Surrounded by nature's grandeur, we anticipate moments of shared awe and joy as we explore this pristine wilderness together, creating memories that will resonate for generations to come.

Spent half a day playing around the ancient city of Chaozhou√
Who knows! Because 'Du Sui Rui' is really powerful, we canceled tonight's Chaozhou homestay and the subsequent itinerary 55555 But unexpectedly, we almost finished playing in Chaozhou in half a day
We went straight to the ancient city of Chaozhou at noon, and parked the car at the foot of the city wall (maybe because we went early, we could still find a spot! In the evening when we drove, we found out that it was free! No wonder the snack bar owner said parking outside was free, I scanned my phone many times and it kept showing no record! Hahaha, the joy of freeloading
1 Because it was quite hot at noon, the snack bar owner said Kaiyuan Temple was cool, so we went there first. It is said that Kaiyuan Temple is very efficacious
2 Then we strolled around Paifang Street (actually, all the scenic spots in the ancient city are connected, with roads leading in all directions, you can just wander around) Lots of snacks! Oh right, we bought a lot of bottles of oil mandarin juice, really cheap, most of them 5 yuan per bottle, super healthy! Sweet aftertaste! Cooling and refreshing! Because it was too hot, we went to a dessert shop and had some, ordered turtle jelly and duck mother twist, it was just so-so, not the tasty kind of dessert, not recommended~
Then after 4 pm, we went to Guangji Building and Guangji Bridge, there were too many people on the bridge and it was very sunny, so we didn't go up, just looked at Guangji Bridge by the river~ (it's cooler with the shade of trees~) There are many sellers of autumn pear cream and luohan fruit drinks, reasonably priced, refreshing and tasty~4 Near Guangji Building, there are many tricycles offering tours of the eight scenic spots of Chaozhou ancient city, priced at 100/car (a car should fit up to three people at most! One person has to sit facing backwards) I, adhering to the principle of saving where I can, tried to bargain and successfully got it down to 70 yuan, then the three of us happily
Took a tricycle ride around the ancient city! Our driver was a local from Chaozhou
He was very honest and gave a detailed introduction, highly recommended! Because we went late, most of the scenic spots were closed, we could only take a quick look at the entrance Special reminder: the tricycle has a fixed route, it will take you to a place selling Chaozhou's three treasures, but it's okay if many don't buy anything, we just happened to want to buy so we bought a little) As for the duration of the whole tricycle ride, I feel it's about an hour? But this depends on how long you spend at the scenic spots and the speed of the tricycle. Overall, the tricycle experience was great!
5 After the tricycle ride, the end point was near Kaiyuan Temple, we walked to Xima Road to eat snacks~ Had fermented tofu chicken wings, salty rice cake, almond tea, rice cake, peach cake, phoenix tofu, oyster pancake, seaweed beef ball soup, sticky rice pork intestine, etc., didn't specifically look for shops, just bought from the ones with more people, emmm it was just okay, nothing amazing, maybe I'm just not very sensitive to this kind of food~ But it's still worth a try
6 Finally, we went to see the night view of Guangji Building, it was great! There were many stalls selling lanterns and hairpins, lanterns were basically 5-15 yuan, not sure about the hairpins, pretty cute~ (Oh right! When we were on the city wall, it suddenly started pouring rain, many people didn't bring umbrellas, the shops below immediately broadcasted: Selling raincoats and umbrellas! But it was just a shower, stopped after about ten minutes~)
7 Because we had to rush back to Xiamen, we didn't see the light show of Guangji Bridge~ But
we saw the night view of Guangji Bridge! Chaozhou·Guangdong

Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou
The Kaiyuan Temple in the ancient city of Chaozhou was built in the 26th year of Kaiyuan of the Tang Dynasty (738). During the Yuan Dynasty, it was called 'Kaiyuan Wanshou Zen Temple', in the Ming Dynasty it became 'Kaiyuan Zhenguo Zen Temple', and since the Qing Dynasty, 'Kaiyuan Zhenguo Zen Temple' and 'Kaiyuan Temple' have been used interchangeably. According to contemporary experts in ancient architecture: the architectural model of the famous Todai-ji Temple's Buddha Hall in Japan from the Song Dynasty is exactly the same as the current Kaiyuan Temple's Heavenly King Hall, confirming that the Heavenly King Hall is a Song Dynasty structure with high research value. It is often visited by architecture schools from both within China and abroad for observation and study, and is acclaimed as a 'pearl of ancient architectural art'. In 2001, Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, as an ancient building from the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Paifang Street
Paifang, the treasure of Chinese architectural culture, is not only a monument erected in feudal society to commend meritorious service, scholarly achievements, virtuous governance, and loyalty and filial piety, but also a witness to history and a carrier of cultural heritage. Among the numerous paifangs, the Paifang Street of Chaozhou is undoubtedly a unique and eye-catching presence. Here, between two streets, there stands a majestic paifang every 50 or 100 meters, as if telling the stories and history of the ancient city.
The characteristic architecture of Paifang Street—the arcade buildings—ingeniously blends Chinese and Western cultures. The 22 Chinese-style Ming and Qing stone paifangs and the Nanyang-style arcade buildings on both sides complement each other, forming a series of unique landscape paintings. These arcade buildings not only reflect the introduction of Nanyang architectural styles in the late Ming and early Qing periods but also showcase the unique understanding and creativity of the Chaozhou people in cultural exchange.
Strolling through the arcades of Paifang Street, you will find that the shops here are filled with a strong cultural atmosphere. Chaozhou's intangible cultural heritages, such as Chao embroidery, hand-pulled teapots, ceramics, and kung fu tea, are perfectly presented here. At the same time, various Chaozhou delicacies are mouth-watering: Chaozhou's three treasures, beef hot pot, rice noodle rolls, licorice fruit... Each bite is an exploration of the past and present of the ancient city of Chaozhou. In the streets and alleys of Chaozhou, there is a wide variety of food, and the decoration of the shops is also very visually striking. The Chaozhou people's attention to food is astonishing. Whether it's a 'beef ball' every three steps, a 'licorice fruit' every two steps, a 'Chaozhou three treasures' every five steps, or a 'raw fish' every ten steps, it all reflects the Chaozhou people's love and pursuit of good food. At the same time, the local tea culture and beverage innovation are unique contributions of the Chaozhou people to the food culture. Here, you can feel the charm and vitality of the ancient city of Chaozhou, as well as the Chaozhou people's love and pursuit of life.

Min Nan Charm with Nanyang Flavor --- A Great Place for a Date or a Leisurely Stroll
🚙 I set off from Chaozhou with my northern friend, driving to Fujian for a brief visit. Our first stop was Zhangzhou, which I remembered as a small city. However, the roads were wide, the greenery was well-maintained, and the buildings were tall, indicating the city's solid foundation. It's quite different from the organized chaos of my hometown Chaozhou .
🏡 Zhangzhou Ancient City is a well-preserved historical and cultural site within Zhangzhou, complete with an underground parking lot. The cultural landscape of the ancient city is rich, retaining many ancient temples and traditional streets, exuding a strong Min Nan and Nanyang fusion atmosphere. It's like an old lady with a heart of white and orange-red, speaking the ancient Chaozhou dialect (which is different from Min Nan dialect, and why Zhangzhou people speak Chaozhou dialect is a matter for investigation).
👉 We visited during a holiday, and the ancient city was lively but not crowded. There were quite a few cultural and creative shops; the cover photo was taken from the second floor of a bookstore. There were even more food-related businesses, and with the help of the integrated architectural background, the general mood was quite pleasant. We watched the night view of the ancient city from the second floor of a coffee shop, and a procession dressed in ancient costumes passed by, heading into the night, creating a somewhat eerie atmosphere...
👉 Walking around the ancient city, the street snacks were not much different from our Chaozhou snacks. The four-fruit soup was sweet and refreshing, and the mochi was surprisingly delicious, winning over my northern friend with its simple and pure taste.
👉 What made a deep impression was the truly ancient archways here (the ancient archways from the Ming and Qing dynasties have been restored), standing solemnly one after another, casting powerful shadows and giving a strong sense of historical vicissitudes. In contrast, our famous Paifang Street in Chaozhou now only has new archways (rebuilt based on historical images and remaining components of Chaozhou's ancient archways), which is regrettable.
❤️ Overall, with such charm and such a crowd, Zhangzhou Ancient City should be considered a rather low-key attraction in China, and it's free to enter, making it suitable for a casual stroll with a loved one, offering a unique charm.

🔸Guangji Bridge: During the Song and Ming dynasties, Chaozhou was not only an important salt and porcelain capital in Lingnan, but also a cultural mansion, known as the seaside Zou Lu!
The Guangji Bridge, one of the four ancient bridges in China that was built across the Han River in the Southern Song Dynasty, is a witness of that era!
🔸Longhu Ancient Village: One of the ten most beautiful ancient villages in Guangdong, a thousand-year-old ancient village on the Han River, still retains the old three-street six-lane layout

🚅 About transportation
Take the high-speed train to Chaoshan Station, come out and take a 30-minute car to the ancient city;
If you drive by yourself, it is recommended to find a place to park in the city first, there are fewer parking spaces in the ancient city, and it will be more congested

Longhu Ancient Village has a history as melodious as a song
Chaozhou Longhu Ancient Village was established during the Southern Song Dynasty, and there are more than 100 existing ancient buildings that reflect the different architectural styles of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It also encompasses the essence of typical folk architectural crafts of Chaozhou, such as stone carving, wood carving, porcelain inlay, color painting, and shell lime sculpture, and is known as the 'Exhibition of Chaozhou Ancient Architecture'.
Longhu Village has produced 53 scholars and eminent figures from the imperial examinations over the generations. There are also many inscriptions, calligraphy, and steles from famous people. Inside the village, there are more than 100 ancestral halls, mansions of officials, and residences of wealthy merchants and gentry, many of which are five or even ten courtyards deep.
The streets and alleys are well-ordered, and the mottled old houses are still inhabited by their descendants. The buildings exude a strong sense of history and vicissitudes, which is also a living fossil of Chaozhou's local culture.

The village is strip-shaped, stretching from north to south, covering an area of about 1.5 square kilometers. It was founded during the Song Dynasty and has a history of about a thousand years.
Longhu Ancient Village is renowned both domestically and internationally for its reputation as a 'model of Teochew dwelling, home to a thousand ancestral halls, and a legacy of scholarly culture for generations.' Today, it still preserves the landscape of three streets and six alleys that reflect its former prosperity. The village's architecture is a collection of Chaozhou's decorative arts, including stone carving, wood carving, shell carving, porcelain inlay, color painting, and plaster sculpture, showcasing architectural styles from the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties, and the Republic of China. In modern times, it has also absorbed Western architectural art, making it a treasure trove of Chaozhou architectural art.
In November 2012, Longhu Ancient Village was selected as one of the top ten most beautiful ancient villages in Guangdong.

Longhu Ancient Village, it's worth a visit!
Today, I'm here to share with you my adventure in Longhu Ancient Village. 🌟✈️
At first, I was full of anticipation for this trip, but it was full of twists and challenges. The parking lot was set up a kilometer away, and a lady mislead me that it was only a hundred meters away, which made me feel a bit overwhelmed. 😱🚗
However, when I stepped into the village gate, everything became interesting. On both sides were dense shops of all colors, selling snacks and specialties as tempting as Chaozhou ancient city. Although I was a bit disappointed at first, I then found a small alley full of red lanterns, so I decided to follow my feelings and go in. 😉🍔
In the alley, I saw rows of ancient houses, a bit like Jiaji Alley in Chaozhou ancient city, but more spacious and open, the direction of the alley also has some curvature, as if it reminded me of the memory of Wuyuan Xiaolikeng. Although there is no lively small bridge and flowing water, they all have similar beauty. 🏰📸
Fang Bo's house and the scholar's house are the essence of the ancient village. Although these old houses are dilapidated and uninhabited, the lanterns in front of the door are shaking, but the outlines of the murals are still clearly visible, firmly showing the traces of history. Time is ruthless, but the traces it leaves still make people respect. 🎭⏳
I deeply love ancient buildings, because they are the carriers of history, as if connected with the past. Walking out of the alley, there are towering ancient trees and clear lake water in front of me, the bridge stands tall, and the girls in ethnic costumes on the bridge add a touch of vitality and beauty. Just like the traditional concept of unity of heaven and man, here integrates the rural scenery, bringing me peace and joy. 🌳🌾🌌
Back to the main street and heading south, the shops gradually disappear, allowing me to see the ancestral halls of several prominent families. Among them, the Xu family ancestral hall is the most magnificent, which also reminds me of the descendants of Xu Fuma in Chaozhou city and the Xu family in Longhu have a lot of family origins. This sense of history is really moving! 🏯🌸
When I walked to the south gate, I was greeted by the magnificent Tianhou Palace, the banyan tree covered the sky, and the incense of Mazu was still prosperous. 🌿🙏🔆
In a snack shop full of cooking awards, I tasted a plate of gold medal fried noodles, which actually added sesame and white sugar, the taste is unique and surprising. Then, I also tasted the tender red peach cake, potato cake and vegetable dumplings. What's different is that the boss lady fried it with oil, which makes it more delicious, and with duck shit fragrant tea, it's unforgettable. My taste buds were simply healed! 🍜🍡🌶️
There are many cafes on the main street here, but for me, the most atmospheric one is not far south of the Xu family ancestral hall. Because there are no other shops, it shows a more refined taste. Old house, low square table, small bamboo chair, this is the most comfortable place to drink a cup of special fruit coffee. It's really worth the trip! ☕️🍏
Finally, I bought two red clay cup mats in the style of red peach cakes in a shop selling ceramic bowls and cups, and the trip was successfully concluded. I left Longhu Ancient Village with joy and harvest, and made up my mind to set foot on this beautiful place again. 🥰🎁👣
If you also like ancient buildings and traditional culture, then a trip to Longhu Ancient Village will definitely not disappoint you! Whether it's the charm of history or the attraction of nature, it will refresh you. So, take some time and take a walk! 💖✨
