Historic Southern City in the United States | Charleston's Hidden Gem - Aiken-Rhett House

Aiken-Rhett House Museum - Aiken-Rhett House was built by businessman John Robinson in 1820 and is one of the best-preserved row house complexes in the United States, with national significance. The house and its outbuildings were extensively expanded in the 1830s and 1850s by a governor and Mrs. William Aiken, Jr., including a kitchen, former slave quarters, carriage stop, and backyard. The house and its surviving furnishings provide a striking portrait of urban life in antebellum Charleston and of Southern politicians, slaveholders, and businessmen. The house remained in the Aiken family for 142 years before being sold to the Charleston Museum and opened as a museum in 1975. Some of the photos depict the contrast between the luxurious lifestyle of the masters and the living conditions of the slaves.
