Three of these can get you fined. The other four cost you money, time or your health. 🥤 1. Sipping a drink after the MTR gates Eating and drinking, water included, is banned in the whole paid area of the MTR: past the gates, on the platforms and on the trains. The maximum fine is HK$2,000. The only exception is cross-boundary trains to and from Mainland China. Do this instead: finish your drink or snack before you tap in. Putting your feet on a seat carries the same maximum fine, and so does ignoring a queue that staff are managing. 🛗 2. Walking up the escalator MTR asks everyone to hold the handrail and stand still on both sides. Its stations record about 500 escalator incidents a year. Around 60% involve someone losing their balance while walking, being bumped, or carrying bulky items. Do this instead: stand on either side and hold on. If you have a big suitcase, take the lift. 🚭 3. Smoking or vaping in a queue Since 1 Jan 2026, smoking in a no-smoking area carries a HK$3,000 fixed penalty, and inspectors issue it without prior warning. The new no-smoking areas are: · queues of two or more people at bus, minibus, taxi and tram stops, including hotel shuttle and tour bus stops · queues for places such as museums, public pools and stadiums (restaurant and shop queues are not included) · the area within 3 m (about 6-7 steps) of entrances to schools, hospitals, care homes, child care centres and specified clinics E-cigarettes and heated tobacco count as smoking. Do this instead: leave vapes at home. Since 30 Apr 2026, simply carrying e-cigarette liquid, cartridges or heat sticks in a public place is an offence, with its own HK$3,000 fixed penalty. Vaping in a no-smoking area can get you two penalty notices at once. 🚦 4. Looking the wrong way when crossing Traffic keeps to the left, so the nearest lane comes at you from the right. Crossing against the red man at a signalised crossing carries a fine of up to HK$2,000. Do this instead: follow the LOOK RIGHT and LOOK LEFT signs at bus lanes. Cross at footbridges, subways, Zebra crossings or Green Man crossings, and keep looking while you cross. 💵 5. Tipping on top of the service charge Most Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill. An extra 10-15% tip on top of that means paying for service twice. Do this instead: read the bill first. Where no service charge is added, a 10% tip is welcomed. Small tips for taxi drivers, bellboys, doormen and washroom attendants are up to you. 🥵 6. Hiking at midday in summer heat From May to October, high temperatures on the trails can cause heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Hong Kong's official hiking guidelines say to skip hikes on very hot, humid, windless days. Do this instead: start early. Never hike alone (a group of at least four is best). Carry plenty of water, food, a sun cap and a fully charged phone with a backup battery, and don't drink untreated stream water. When the Observatory's Very Hot Weather Warning is up, drink more water. If you feel dizzy, sick or short of breath, stop, rest in the shade and get help. 🚋 7. Tapping Octopus at the Peak Tram gate Octopus can't be used for direct entry at the Peak Tram terminus gates. Do this instead: buy a ticket at the on-site counter, which takes Octopus, cash and major credit cards. Both termini open 7:30 am to 11 pm every day. On regular days, come before 3 pm. Expect crowd control on public holidays and in festive seasons. The tram closes under Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher. 🔌 Bonus: plugs Hong Kong runs on 220 V, 50 Hz. Hong Kong uses the UK-style three-rectangular-pin plug (Type G), and you will also find three-round-pin sockets. One of my favorite experiences in Hong Kong was taking the iconic Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak (太平山)! We bought round-trip Peak Tram tickets with access to Sky Terrace 428, so we could enjoy the tram ride both ways and take in the incredible views from the top. 🚋 The Peak Tram Experience The tram ride was such a fun experience! As we climbed the steep hillside, we could see Hong Kong’s skyscrapers from a completely different angle. 🏙️ Sky Terrace 428 (摩天台428) The view from the top was absolutely stunning! We were lucky to visit on a beautiful sunny day with bright blue skies, making the entire Hong Kong skyline look even more amazing. From 428 meters above sea level, we could enjoy panoramic views of Victoria Harbour, countless skyscrapers, and the surrounding green mountains. And one thing I’ll never forget was the WIND! 🌬️😂 The atmosphere up there was wonderful, but the wind was incredibly strong. In the bustling city of Hong Kong, there is a place where you can look down at the concrete jungle from above, and that is Victoria Peak. Taking the Peak Tram is a wonderful journey, not only offering a panoramic view of the city but also providing a historical experience. The tram starts at Central on Hong Kong Island, the commercial hub of the city, where the bustling crowds and skyscrapers make you feel the rhythm of urban life. As I stepped onto the tram, I felt particularly excited. When the tram slowly started to ascend, my view began to change gradually. The beauty of Hong Kong Island unfolded before my eyes as the cityscape slowly emerged at the foot of the mountain. At the beginning, the tram's slope is very steep, giving a slight thrill. Trees and flowers on both sides quickly recede from the window, and as the altitude increases, the distant Victoria Harbour, the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island, and even Kowloon on the opposite side gradually reveal themselves. The air is filled with a slight chill, making it particularly comfortable. After about ten minutes, the tram finally reaches the top of Victoria Peak. Upon disembarking, I was greeted by a spectacular and magnificent view. Standing on the observation deck at the peak, the entire scenery of Hong Kong is laid out before you, especially at sunset when the golden sunlight casts shimmering reflections on the sea, creating an incredibly beautiful sight. At the peak, there is also a famous Hong Kong landmark—the Peak Tower, which houses an observation restaurant. I couldn't resist enjoying a cup of coffee here, savoring the leisure. Sitting by the window, the surrounding scenery and delicious food made for the perfect combination. Here, I could easily relax and feel the unique atmosphere of the city. After the delightful tram journey, I couldn't help but feel that the Peak Tram is not just a means of transportation but an excellent Hong Kong experience. As I descended the mountain, my heart was filled with love for this city, looking forward to returning to explore more possibilities. We did Hong Kong and Macau together in one 8D7N trip. We were travelling with our young child, so we didn’t plan a long list of places for every day. Some days were full, while some were kept quite simple. Day 1 | Hong Kong Arrived in Hong Kong and checked into Park Hotel Hong Kong. We didn’t go anywhere after that and just rested at the hotel. Day 2 | The Peak + Hong Kong at Night We took the Peak Tram up to The Peak, then went out again later for a night city walk and night market. Day 3 | Hong Kong Disneyland Moved to Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and spent the day at Disneyland. This was our full Disney day, so we stayed until after dinner before heading back to the hotel. Day 4 | Hong Kong → Macau After breakfast at Enchanted Garden, we left for Macau. We chose 金巴 and crossed via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge instead of taking the ferry. After arriving in Macau, we checked into Andaz Macau. Day 5 | Old Macau Spent the day around old Macau and 大三巴. We took our time walking around the area rather than trying to cover too many places. Day 6 | Macau → Hong Kong For the journey back, we tried the ferry instead and booked First Class. After reaching Hong Kong, we checked into Kowloon Shangri-La for our last two nights. Day 7 | Hong Kong City Walk + LEGOLAND We spent our last full day walking around Hong Kong and later made a spontaneous visit to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. It turned out to be an easy way to end the day with our child. Day 8 | Home Time to head home. Looking back, I’m quite happy with how we arranged this trip. We didn’t squeeze Macau into a day trip, and we also gave Disneyland its own hotel stay instead of travelling back to the city at night.
