Fort Santiago is located on the Pasig River where it was constructed in 1590 as a defense against pirates. It is part of the Intramuros section of Manila. Fort Santiago was named as the Shrine of Freedom in 1950. If you visit Fort Santiago, you can tour the Rizal Shrine to honor the Philippine hero José Rizal who was imprisoned there in a prison cell in 1896. The shrine includes bronze footprints that mark his final steps from the cell to the place where he was executed.
