Yanyuan County is under the jurisdiction of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. It is located on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and on the west bank of the lower reaches of the Yalong River. Yanyuan County got its name due to being rich in salt (Yanyuan literally means “salt source”). There is also a local legend about a salt well discovered by a Mosuo shepherdess. Yanyuan’s natural scenery is very beautiful, and features attractions such as Lugu Lake, Luowa Wharf, and Dazu Pier.
