This must-do national park requires multiple days to explore the different sides the site. There are a multitude of optional activities and sites that will require additional fees starting from a number of lengthy cable cars to the outdoor elevator or glass bridge. Those attending must properly plan out their days to make the most of the large area, the crowds were just right when travelling in November and the weather was superb, however did not get the experience the low clouds that a lot of photographers love. Transportation to this region can be done so via a flight into the local airport or a high-speed train from a number of major cities. #chinatrip A stunning, breathtaking and awe-inspiring place. The inspiration for Pandora in the Avatar movie. An absolute must-see. The best time to see will be in early winter as the place will appear mythical and magical in the mist. The park comprised of dense forests, deep ravines, deep canyons, unusual peaks, caves, and pillar-like rock formations blanketed throughout the park. These pillar rock formations are what the park is renowned for around the world.

The area that became famous from the movie Avatar. Photos can never do this place justice. It's one of those areas you have to witness with your own eyes.

I am staying in Zhangjiajie, close to Dayong town, so booked a taxi to the site costing approximately 90rmb. I made sure to leave extremely early to beat the crowds and arrived at 7am. It was very easy to buy a ticket and considering the ticket gives you access to the park for 4 days, very cost effective. My ticket cost 224rmb. The ticket includes the shuttle bus journeys but not the cable car trips (65-75rmb), glass elevator (65rmb) or sightseeing train (38rmb). These have to be booked separately at the site. This did bump the cost up quite a bit. The park is huge! I spent 2 days exploring. Everything is beautiful and easy to find if you have a map (our hotel provided us with a map and you can buy them on site). There are numerous highlights to see such as the first bridge, the Avatar shooting site, the glass elevator and Tianzi mountain. There are also lots of hiking trails offered and these are clearly labelled on the map. We hiked up Tianzi mountain, it was a fantastic experience that took about 2 hours. The visit requires a lot of walking so wear sensible shoes. There are plenty of food and drink options on site. There is also lots of shopping opportunities, I bought a beautiful oil painting of the mountains. Zhangjiajie National Forest park is a MUST VISIT place in China. Walking through the quiet deep mountain canyons, the boundary between man and nature begins to blur. Personally, I think the most quintessential part of Jinbian Stream is actually in the middle U-shaped valley, where it's quieter and more artistic, with fewer people. The two ends are more crowded. The whole journey is 5.7km, and with stops and photo taking, it takes about 2.5 hours. If time allows, I recommend walking the entire distance.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park 1. Specific route for playing at the bottom of the mountain: Enter through the central gate (Zimu Gang ticket station)—Take the eco-friendly bus—Get off at Shui Rao Si Men station—Hike along Jinbian Stream (from east to west)—Arrive at the Great Oxygen Bar Square—Take the eco-friendly bus to Huangshi Village—Get off at the lower station of Huangshi Village cableway—Take the cableway up to Huangshi Village—Tour Huangshi Village clockwise along the big loop—Take the cableway down from Huangshi Village—Take the eco-friendly bus—Head to the south gate of the forest park to exit—Dinner: Xiangji Lao Cai Restaurant 2. Points to note: 1. Time management is crucial to avoid travel groups. I recommend walking Jinbian Stream from east to west. The central gate opens at 7:30 AM, and travel groups usually start hiking from the Great Oxygen Bar Square, moving from west to east along Jinbian Stream around 8:00 AM. Therefore, between 9:00-10:30 AM, the photo spots where 'Journey to the West' was filmed will be crowded. I suggest we either reach the filming location before 9:00 AM or after 10:30 AM, by which time the groups will have passed, making it easier for us to take photos. 2. Safety issues: There are two sections along Jinbian Stream with many monkeys. Do not expose food in front of them or rummage through your bags, as there's a chance the monkeys will snatch things like phones and sunglasses, which they can't distinguish as edible or not. Remember to protect children. 3. I believe Huangshi Village is the most beautiful spot in Zhangjiajie. Don't listen to travel groups saying otherwise. A visit to Huangshi Village should be reserved for 3-4 hours. Travel groups take the cable car up and only take photos around a few spots near the cable car station. I suggest touring Huangshi Village clockwise along the big loop. There's a trail along the edge of the mountain, surrounding the entire village, offering many beautiful views and a peaceful experience with fewer tourists. 4. I recommend taking the cable car to go up and down Huangshi Village. If you choose to walk down, reserve 2-3 hours as the path is particularly steep with some stairs that are wet and slippery. It's not suitable for children and the elderly to hike. Since we have both elderly and children in our group, I've arranged a hiking route up Tianzi Mountain for the third day, so we'll take the cable car both ways. 5. After exiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park through the north gate, there are fewer restaurants compared to the east gate. Be mentally prepared.
