Do I Need a Visa to Go to Japan?

Generally, whether you need to apply for a Japan visa depends on two things.

• Your nationality: Citizens of many countries such as United states, Canada, and most European countries, are exempt from holding a Japan visa for short-term stay(tourism, business, etc. They can visit Japan for up to 90 days without a visa.
• The length and purpose of your stay: However, even citizens of visa-exempt contries and regions have to apply for a Japan visa if they plan to work or study in Japan.

For short-term stay, lots of citizens of certain countries can enter Japan for limited period of time(15 to 90 consective days) for tourism ans business purposes.

Japan Visa-Exempt Counties & Regions

Japan has reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions. The permitted duration of stay varies: 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, 30 days for Brunei and Qatar, and 90 days for all other listed countries and regions.

Japan Visa Types

The Japanese government mainly issued the following types of visas for foreign citizens.

Short-term Stay Visa

• Japan Tourist Visa: This is for individuals who want to visit Japan for sightseeing, holiday, or visiting friends and family.
• Japan Business Visa: This is for individuals who are visiting Japan for business purposes such as attending meetings, conferences, or seminars.
• Japan Transit Visa: This is for individuals who are passing through Japan to reach another destination.

Long-term Stay Visa

• Student Visa: This is for individuals who want to study in Japan.
• Permanent Resident Visa: This is for individuals who have lived in Japan for a long period and have shown good conduct.
• Spouse or Child of Japanese National Visa: This is for individuals who are married to a Japanese national or are the child of a Japanese national.

How to Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa?

A Japan tourist visa is a short-term entry permit issued to foreigners who wish to visit Japan for the purpose of tourism, visiting friends or relatives, or other short-term non-business activities. Here is a step-to-step guide to get a Japan tourist visa.

• Step 1: Check Your Eligibility. Ensure that you are eligible to apply for a Japan tourist visa. First, confirm that your nationality is not on Japan's visa exemption list. You must have a valid passport, be in good health, and have no criminal record.
• Step 2: Gather Necessary Documents You Need. You will need to provide several documents, including your passport, a visa application form, a recent photograph (2" x 2" or 45mm x 35mm), a detailed schedule of your stay, documents that prove your financial stability (like bank statements), proof of residency (such as a driver's license or state ID), and flight itinerary and hotel booking.
• Step 3: Visit the Japanese Embassy or Consulate. For a single-entry tourist visa (stay of less than 90 days), you can now apply online through the official JAPAN eVISA website at evisa.mofa.go.jp. For all other types of visa applications, including short-term business visa, short-term relatives/friends visiting visa, transit visa, double-entry visa, and short-term tourism multiple-entry visa, you must apply in person at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country. Some countries may allow you to apply through a travel agency. Check the website of the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country for specific instructions.
• Step 4: Pay the Visa Fee. Effective July 1, 2026, the visa fee has been revised. For most countries, a single-entry visa costs 15,000 yen, and a multiple-entry visa costs 30,000 yen. Citizens of certain countries are exempt from paying the fee. For online eVISA applications, payment is made by credit card through the system.
• Step 5: Wait for Your Visa to Be Processed. The processing time for a Japan tourist visa is a minimum of five business days. • Step 6: Collect Your Visa. Once your eVISA is approved, you will not have a visa sticker in your passport. You will be requested to display the "visa issuance notice" on your device (such as a smartphone or tablet) when checking in at the airport. Other forms such as PDF files or screenshots will not be accepted. For applications made at the embassy or consulate, you may need to pick up your visa in person or have it mailed to you.

Remember, obtaining a visa does not guarantee entry into Japan. Immigration officials at the port of entry have the final say on whether you are allowed to enter the country. Also, beware of fraudulent websites that resemble the official JAPAN eVISA website. Please note that effective July 1, 2026, transit visas are no longer issued.

How to Apply for a Japan Business Visa?

A Japan Business Visa is a short-term visa granted to foreign nationals who wish to enter Japan for business purposes such as attending meetings, conferences, signing contracts, or other general business activities.

The general application procedure is same as applying for a Japan tourist visa. Apart from basic material(see the table below) such as the passport, visa application form, one passport-sized photo, and travel schedule, applicants also need Letter from your employer, Letter of Invitation from the company in Japan, Letter of Guarantee from the inviting company in Japan.

How to Apply for a Japan Working Visa?

The Japan working visa is issued to foreign nationals who need to work in Japan. It includes numerous specific types based on the nature of work, such as Professor, Artist, Journalist, Business Manager, Researcher, Instructor, Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services, Intra-company transferee, Nursing care, Skilled labor, and the Highly Skilled Professional visa. The Working Holiday visa is a separate category and is not considered a working visa. The visa validity ranges from three months to five years.

In addition to basic documents such as passport, visa application form, photo, and travel schedule, applying for a working visa requires the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. The COE is usually applied for by the inviting party or sponsor in Japan on behalf of the applicant.

After obtaining the COE, the applicant must submit the visa application to the Japanese embassy or consulate through designated agencies, as individual applications are not accepted in principle.

How to Apply for a Japan Student Visa?

The Japan student visa is issued to foreign nationals who wish to study at a Japanese language school, vocational school, college, or university. The duration of stay is typically granted for 1 year or 2 years, and may be renewed as needed depending on the length of the study program.

To apply, in addition to basic documents such as passport, visa application form, photo, and travel schedule, students must provide the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), proof of admission from the educational institution, and proof of financial capability. The COE itself may take 2 to 3 months to obtain, but once received, the visa application at the embassy or consulate is usually processed within 5 business days.

The application procedure for a student visa is not the same as for a tourist visa. Student visa applications must be submitted through designated visa application agencies, and individual applications are not accepted in principle.

How to Apply for a Japan Transit Visa?

A Japan transit visa is a type of short-term visa that was issued to foreigners who are transiting through Japan to reach another destination. This visa was typically valid for a stay of up to 72 hours or 3 days. During the validity of this visa, travelers were not allowed to engage in paid activities.

As of July 1, 2026, the transit visa category has been discontinued. Travelers who need to pass through customs and enter Japan during a layover must now apply for a "Temporary Visitor Visa" (a type of short-term stay visa). If you remain airside and do not enter Japan (do not pass through Immigration), you do not need a visa.
